1 Is your service user malnourished? Food First information for domiciliary care providers RDaSH leading the way with care

3 Your service user has been identified as being at risk of malnutrition. This means they may not be getting enough nutrition from their diet. The following ideas can help to improve nutritional intake. High calorie snack ideas: Scone with butter and jam Cream/chocolate filled biscuits Cake with jam and cream Sausage rolls, pork pies, quiche Crackers and cheese Full fat yoghurt or mousse. If your service user has been advised to follow a texture modified diet, contact the dietetic service on for advice on appropriate texture modified foods. Enriching foods: We can enrich food and drink with extra calories without changing the volume. Always use high fat and sugar products Add fortified milk (Mix 2-4 tablespoons of dried milk powder to 1 pint of whole milk) to foods where possible. Add butter, cheese and double cream to main meals Add custard, double cream and ice cream to desserts. Practical ideas Provide finger foods e.g. biscuits, crackers, sandwiches Ensure snacks and drinks are within reach before leaving Help to choose high fat and sugar options when shopping Provide encouragement to eat and drink Make food look appealing e.g. use bright coloured food/plates if available. 3

4 High Calorie Drinks Encourage your service user to have two per day, between or after meals if possible. Try to replace low calorie drinks, such as tea, water and diluted juice with high calorie drinks such as whole milk, full sugar drinks and hot chocolate made with fortified milk. Also, try our high calorie drink recipes! Supershake: (makes 1 portion) 200ml whole milk 2 tablespoons dried milk powder 1. Mix dried milk powder and milkshake powder together in a glass 2. Gradually add in the milk and stir well 3 heaped teaspoons vitamin fortified milkshake powder (e.g. Nesquik or supermarket own brand) Superjuice: (makes 1 portion) 100ml lemonade (avoid no added sugar) 75ml cordial (avoid no added sugar) 1. Mix ingredients together and stir well (not suitable for people with diabetes unless agreed with your health care professional). 2 tablespoons icing sugar 1 tablespoon golden syrup Supersoup: (makes 1 portion) 1 sachet of cup a soup (smooth, no bits) 1 tablespoon dried milk powder 200ml whole milk A little boiling water 1. Mix the cup a soup sachet contents and dried milk powder with a little boiling water to dissolve 2. Heat the milk and stir in gradually until dissolved The high calorie drinks can be thickened using a thickening agent. Please discuss with the Speech and Language Therapist for instructions on how to do this, to ensure the correct thickness. For those with a diagnosis of diabetes some of the snack ideas and recipes in this booklet may increase blood glucose levels. Please seek advice from a healthcare professional (dietitian, GP or nurse) if you have any concerns or queries. 4 Is your service user malnourished?

5 High Calorie Drinks and Shots These are suitable for those who struggle to manage large volumes of fluid. Super Creamshot: (makes 1 portion) 40ml double cream 1. Mix ingredients together and stir well Flavouring to taste such as vanilla, strawberry, chocolate, blackcurrant or peppermint Supershake Compact: (makes 1 portion) 125ml whole milk 3 tablespoons dried milk powder 1. Mix dried milk powder and milkshake powder together in a glass 2.
