1 Leicestershire Nutritin and Dietetic Services Fd First Adapting meals t prevent weight lss If yu have a pr appetite it is best t aim t meet yur nutritinal needs thrugh rdinary fd and fluids. We call this apprach fd first. This includes: Fd frtificatin Snacks between meals Regular milky drinks Chsing high calrie and high prtein fds/fluids. Fd frtificatin will increase the calrie and prtein cntent f the diet. This will nt increase the prtin size but will aid weight gain and help t meet yur nutritinal needs. This infrmatin leaflet cntains ideas n nurishing snacks, drinks and recipe ideas t increase the calrie and prtein cntent f yur fd.

2 Add a little extra t get a lt mre Everyday fds yu can use t frtify meals withut increasing the prtin size Matchbx size f hard cheese (30g) adds an extra 125 calries and 7.5g prtein Grate cheese in with mashed ptates, sup r baked beans, Melted cheese n tast Add t white sauces Add grated cheese t a ptat tpping Please nte: melted cheese can becme stringy s may nt be suitable fr peple with swallwing prblems. 2 teaspns f butter (10g) adds an extra 70 calries Add butter t ptates r vegetables Spread thickly n bread r tast Add t white, cheese r parsley sauces Add n pasta r spaghetti 1 heaped teaspn (6g) f sugar adds an extra 25 calries Add t breakfast cereals Add int drinks e.g. tea, cffee, smthies, milkshakes Add t puddings e.g, rice pudding, semlina r fruit 1 tablespn (15mls) f single cream adds an extra 30 calries and duble cream (15mls) adds 65 calries. Add t mashed ptat, sup, dahl Add t puddings and yghurts r with fruit Add int drinks e.g. cffee, tea, ht chclate, malted drinks, smthies r milk shakes On breakfast cereals 1 tablespn (10g) f dried skimmed milk pwder adds an extra 35 calries and 3.5g prtein Add t 200mls f full fat milk and use in sauces, sups, drinks, puddings, prridge and breakfast cereals Add int creamy ygurt *Alternatively make up 1 pint f frtified milk by adding 3 tablespns f dried skimmed milk pwder t 1 pint f full fat milk and whisk until disslved. This can then be kept in the fridge t be used thrughut the day.

7 Nurishing Drink Ideas In additin t balanced meals and fd frtificatin, these drinks may be useful fr thse wh require extra prtein and calries t gain weight. Milkshake (200 calries, 8g prtein) 140ml full fat milk 1 tablespn f dried skimmed milk pwder 1 tablespn milkshake pwder (any flavur) 1 scp ice cream Add the milkshake pwder and dried skimmed milk pwder t the milk and whisk t mix thrughly. Mix in the ice-cream (may need t be blended r left t sften s that it can be mixed easily). Fruit drink (200 calries) 100ml fruit juice 100ml lemnade (nn-diet variety) 1 scp srbet 1 tablespn sugar (we used range juice and lemn srbet but feel free t experiment) Blend all the ingredients tgether until smth. Fruit ygurt drink (370 calries, 13g prtein) 1 pt full fat fruit ygurt 130ml full fat milk 1 tablespn dried skimmed milk pwder 2 teaspns hney Mix the ingredients tgether and blend until smth Ht chclate (220 calries, 11g prtein) 200ml full fat milk 1 tablespn dried skimmed milk pwder 3 heaped teaspns drinking chclate Sugar t taste Warm the milk. Add the dried skimmed milk pwder, chclate pwder and sugar and mix tgether. Als try malted milk drinks, cffee made with frtified milk, fresh fruit juice r milk n its wn. These drinks will prvide mre energy and prtein than teas and cffees made with water r crdial/squash.

8 Tips fr increasing fd intake Have smaller meals but mre frequently thrughut the day Have nurishing snacks and drinks between meals D nt verfill a plate at meal times but try a smaller plate and keep the prtins smaller D nt fill up n lw energy, filling fds like fruit and vegetables unless they are served with cream, ice-cream r cheese sauce Ensure the envirnment yu are eating in is calm and peaceful Always try t have full-fat/sugar versins f fds, unless yu have diabetes Make fds lk attractive.
