6 FOR HEALTHY LIVING NOTE FROM YOUR DIETITIAN Happy October! While kids are getting ready for Halloween, adults are enjoying football season and the tailgating and parties that go along with it! If you are trying to eat healthier or lose weight, you can still enjoy your favorite football-watching foods! Just keep the following tips in mind. Use real food when preparing dishes Eat real cheese Avoid processed cheese Try grating sharp cheddar for nachos Sharp cheddar has a more intense flavor, so you can use less Real cheese is lower in sodium and is loaded with calcium and protein Choose real meat Avoid processed meats like hotdogs and luncheon meats Processed meat contains nitrites and nitrates, which have been linked to cancer Try using 93% ground beef for hamburgers, turkey burgers, lean cuts of steak, or chicken Make real dips Avoid store bought dips Make homemade guacamole or a Greek yogurt based dip Serve with veggies, baked chips, or use as a hamburger topping Be prepared for the party If you are hosting the party, include some healthy options for your guests If you are a guest, bring a healthy dish or appetizer Offer a green salad, veggie or fruit tray, hummus and whole wheat pita bread, or homemade unsalted trail mix Make chicken chili with extra veggies Spice it up with homemade salsa and baked tortilla chips Portion layered taco dip into small plastic cups for individual servings Practice healthy grilling Choose healthier topping for burgers like tomato, bell peppers, lettuce, avocado, and mustard Offer whole wheat buns Prepare sliders of beef, steak, or chicken for smaller portioned treats Choose leaner cuts of beef like sirloin, flank steak or t-bone Grill chicken and veggie kabobs Try this Healthy Mexican Slider recipe found at Ingredients 1 pound lean ground turkey 1 tablespoon chili powder ½ teaspoon garlic powder ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper 7 mini whole-wheat hamburger bun ½ avocado mashed 7 tomato slices 3½ slices reduced-fat pepper jack cheese slices, cut in half (optional) Instructions Prepare an indoor or outdoor grill. In a medium bowl, mix together turkey, chili powder, garlic powder and black pepper. Divide turkey into seven equal portions, shaping into a patty. Place patties on grill rack; grill 3-4 minutes per side or until juices run clear. Place burger on bun and top with 2 teaspoons avocado, 1 tomato slice and ½ slice cheese. Repeat for remaining burgers.
