1 . Wooden Canoe Heritage Association P.O. Box 117 Tamworth, N. H Western NY- Chapter 1 The Monthly Newsletter of the Western New York Chapter 1 of the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association April 2019 Western New York Chapter 1 March Meeting By: Pete Shea Sharpening Jig - Facilitated by Denny Brunner, Hosted by Suzanne & Bill Keller Denny conducted for Chapter Members his class on Sharpening that he has done before at Assembly and Chapter Meetings. Three members brought their Jigs from past classes and the club made six new ones for members at the session. It was interesting to see the evolution of the jig from past years. The jig is a piece of MDF that is either laminated or solid that is a 1 ¼ to 1 ½ thick, 24 long and 4.5 wide. A piece of ¼ plate glass is mounted on the surface and measures 22 x 4 ½ with tabs to hold it in place. The club sold them for $6 to members and we have two remaining. First call from nonattendees can purchase the jig or they will be donated to the Assembly Auction from the Chapter. Carbide Silicone Sand Paper is attached to the glass with spray adhesive with two different grits on each side of the glass. The strips are 11 x 4.5 which is a half sheet of sand paper. Various sharpening jigs were brought by members and good discussions evolved on what is really sharp. Individuals sharpened Chisels and Plane Blades during the session. I almost forgot to mention lunch. When Gerry & I arrived we brought dessert and some chicken wings but their seemed to be a lot of desserts and not too many main dishes. Well

2 2 the late arrivals must of understood the issue and they all showed up with hearty and delicious main course items. Once again we had a royal feast and thanks to the hospitality of Suzanne and Bill the day went exceptionally well. Until the April outing at the Finger Lakes Boating Museum. ENJOY! The following is a picture of our activities and projects. This is the recipe for the delicious dish to pass that Lou Wirschem brought to our March meeting. Lou has graciously ed it to me to share since so many of us enjoyed it. Thank you Lou for sharing your recipe with all of us. POTATOES AU GRATIN ¼ cup butter or margarine, melted ¼ cup sifted all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon pepper 2 cups milk 1 cup freshly grated sharp cheese 2 pounds (4 cups) cooked diced potatoes (or cauliflower), seasoned with salt and pepper 2 tablespoons butter or margarine, melted ¼ cup dry bread crumbs 1 tablespoon parsley Preheat oven to 375. Grease a 1 1/2 quart casserole. Combine ¼ cup melted butter or margarine, flour and seasonings in saucepan; cook over low heat, stirring until smooth. Add milk gradually, stirring constantly; add cheese. Cook about 5 minutes or until sauce thickens, stirring occasionally. Combine sauce and potatoes; place in prepared casserole. Mix 2 tablespoons melted butter or margarine, bread crumbs and parsley. Sprinkle on top of potatoes. Bake 20 minutes or until browned and thoroughly hot. Makes 6-8 servings. (Notes of some changes that Lou made to the recipe: Here is what I made except I added chopped green onions and minced

3 3 parsley and used half and half for the milk.) Pine Cone Angel By: Susie Nettleton Here she is in her gold spray paint glory. I think it would be fun to make with natural colors. Use white or gold pipe cleaners for arms and silver or gold spray painted gold tee trumpet. Milkweed pods are the wings. We also have grape garlands made out of flash bulbs all spray painted gold. It was the era of gold spray paint for Christmas decorations. The address of the museum is 8231 Pleasant Valley Road, Hammondsport in the old Taylor Wine complex. It is just about an hour s drive from my place in Bloomfield. Please plan to be there by 10:00 when the museum opens. Ed Whiteman one of the driving forces behind the museum will guide us through the actual museum, the boat storage, and the building where I go on Tuesdays and Thursdays to work on restoring the Pat II, the 39 foot long tour boat originally built in the Thousand Islands in Bill Hall s trout boat has been exhibited in the rotating trout boat room. Museum admission is $8, and the museum would appreciate the support. April Meeting at Finger lakes boating museum By: Jim Altemus Our April Meeting will be on Saturday the 13 th at the Finger Lakes Boating Museum. Some of you may have been at the meeting in 2013 when the museum was just opening, and much progress and additional boats have been added since then. We can tour the museum for 2 3 hours, then anybody who wants can have lunch in Hammondsport the summer crowds won t be there yet. Following that, if you wished you could visit some of the local wineries. Please let me know if you plan to attend my is cjaltemus@frontiernet.net. See you on the 13 th.
