2 6 th Grade News By: Mrs. Meixner The sixth grade students spent time in February designing their family Code of Arms. Pictured are their final products. As you can tell, they were very creative and really tried to apply their family values and interests when developing this project. This project was connected with the study of the Byzantine Empire and Medieval Europe. Currently, the students are working in small groups on developing a better understanding of Africa in these four areas:! The People of Africa! Africa s Resources! African Animals! Geographic Regions So, if you ve visited the public library lately you may have seen some of our 6 th graders actively researching, planning, and developing their presentations on Africa! In February, the students took the Winter A-reading assessment, and they were very successful! I am excited for them and look forward to the spring when they will take it again". The sixth grade students are approaching week 6 of the D.A.R.E. program with Deputy Feldman. During their time spent with Deputy Feldman they are learning how to use the decision-making model and practicing by role-playing. If you see a 6 th grader, ask them what the decision-making model is! Have a wonderful March, whether it is cheering on your favorite team during March madness, getting outside as the weather begins to change, or celebrating St. Patrick s Day! 2
3 Fifth & Sixth Grade News By: Mrs. Armstrong In 5 th grade math, the students are working on converting different forms of measurement into other forms of measurement. It is an exciting unit because they are getting to know tools they have not used a lot before in Math. Coming up next is Geometry! In 6 th grade math, the students are working with applying area formulas to problems. We just finished perimeter formulas, and will be going onto volume formulas. In Social Studies, the students are working on understanding the time period that slavery started, how it continued, and eventually how it ended. They are learning about what was going on in the country at the time, what things contributed to the idea, and what eventually helped cause it to stop. In Science, we are almost done with our Living Systems unit. It was a really exciting day when Dr. MacKenzie from the Anamosa Vet Clinic came here and helped us dissect pigs hearts. It was great to see an actual heart like ours and feel and look around to see how it is all put together and the differences between parts. We are finishing up this week talking about instinct, responses to stimuli, and how different animals get attention or notice warning signs of predators. 3
