They are packed with calories and protein, and provide a range of vitamins and minerals. Most of these recipes do not need special equipment and are made from low-cost store cupboard ingredients. 2 Top Tips! Nourishing drinks do not replace meals - enjoy them between meals to boost your nutritional intake. If you do not like / tolerate dairy products, try calcium-enriched soya products instead. Try a range of these recipes to find your favourite; you can choose from: Hot and cold varieties Milk and juice-based Biscuit-based Dairy-free Fortified Milk We recommend you replace your normal milk with fortified milk; use in cereals, sauces, custards, soups and drinks. Fortified milk can also be enjoyed as a drink on its own. A 200ml glass provides 175kcals and 11g protein double the goodness of semi-skimmed milk. Add 4 tablespoons of skimmed milk powder (e.g. Marvel, supermarket own brands) to 1 pint of full cream milk and mix well. Store in the fridge and use within 24 hours. Aim for 1 pint each day. 2
3 RECIPES Hot Milky Drinks Malted Milk (serves 1) 380 calories, 10g protein 25g full fat Horlicks / Ovaltine powder 2 tablespoons of double cream Warm the milk. Mix all the ingredients together until the Horlicks / Ovaltine has dissolved. Hot Chocolate (serves 1) 350 calories, 11g protein 3 heaped teaspoons of instant hot chocolate powder (avoid diet / low calorie versions) 2 tablespoons of double cream Warm the milk. Add the hot chocolate powder and stir until dissolved. Add the double cream and serve. Milky Coffee (serves 1) 310 calories, 11.8g protein 200 ml fortified milk 1-2 teaspoons instant coffee powder 2 tablespoons double cream Warm the milk, add the coffee and stir until dissolved. Add the cream and serve. 3
4 Cinnamon Spice (serves 1) 220 calories, 11g protein 1 tablespoon Golden Syrup Pinch of mixed spice and/or ground cinnamon Warm the milk, stir in the syrup and spices and serve. Cold Milky Drinks Simple Milkshake (serves 1) 380 calories, 13g protein 1 heaped tablespoon milkshake powder 2 tablespoons double cream / condensed milk/ ice cream Put all ingredients in a glass and mix well. Greek Cooler (serves 1) 345 calories, 12g protein 1 tub (150g) full fat Greek yoghurt 2 tablespoons of honey 50ml fortified milk Mix all ingredients together in a glass and serve. Banoffee Treat (serves 1) 350 calories, 12g protein 1 small banana 1 pot of crème caramel 1 teaspoon of Golden Syrup 150ml fortified milk Mix all ingredients together in a blender until smooth, and serve. 4
5 Iced Coffee (serves 1) 300 calories, 11g protein 1-2 teaspoons of instant coffee powder 2 tablespoons of sugar Mix well until coffee powder has dissolved, then serve with ice. Eton Mess (serves 1) 500 calories, 11.6g protein Blend together: 2 meringue nests (approx. 30g) 150ml fortified milk 2½ tablespoons strawberry milkshake powder 2½ tablespoons strawberry jam 1½ tablespoons icing sugar Mix all ingredients in a blender until smooth and serve. Biscuit Cream Dream (serves 1) 520 calories, 15g protein 4 chocolate / cream-filled biscuit (e.g. bourbon / custard cream / chocolate digestive) 2 tablespoons condensed milk Break the biscuits into small pieces. Add to blender with the fortified milk and condensed milk. Blend until smooth and serve. 5
6 Nice n Nutty* (serves 1) 560 calories, 14g protein *Not suitable for those with a nut allergy 2 tablespoons double cream 2 tablespoons condensed milk 2 tablespoons hazelnut chocolate spread Mix all ingredients in a blender until smooth. Juice / Smoothie Drinks Fruit Fusion (serves 1) 230 calories, 2g protein 200ml orange juice 1 banana Handful of fresh / frozen / tinned fruit 1 tablespoon seedless jam Mix all ingredients in a blender until smooth and serve. Greek Fruit Smoothie (serves 1) 370 calories, 11g protein 50g tinned fruit in syrup 50ml full-fat condensed milk 1 small pot of full fat Greek yoghurt Mix all ingredients in a blender until smooth and serve. 6
7 Coconut Smoothie (serves 1) 487 calories, 8.3g protein 100ml coconut milk (avoid low fat versions) 150ml orange juice 1 banana 1 tablespoon smooth peanut butter 1 tablespoon maple / Golden Syrup Mix all ingredients in a blender until smooth and serve. Mini Drinks If you struggle with larger drinks, these smaller servings may be more manageable. Alternatively, any of the recipes in the booklet can be taken in smaller amounts throughout the day. Mini Chocolate Magic (1x 150ml portion) 300 calories, 14.3g protein 100ml evaporated milk 1 tablespoon of double cream 1 tablespoon skimmed milk powder 1 heaped tablespoon drinking chocolate powder (avoid low calorie brands) Mix the drinking chocolate and skimmed milk powder with half of the evaporated milk to form a paste. Add the rest of the evaporated milk and double cream, stir well until smooth. Creamy Shots (1 portion) 134 calories, 0.4g protein 30ml double cream Milkshake syrup (Crusha / own brand) Add a few drops of the syrup to the cream and stir well. 7
