2 Where is Canada in the world?

3 Canada is a country in North America. It has ten provinces and three territories. Canada is the world's second-largest country by total area and the fourth-largest country by land area.

4 What does Canada look like? Lakes It has: Rocky Mountains Cities Coast

5 Canada is officially a bilingual country. That means people speak English and French. 57.8% of Canadians speak English only 22.1% speak French only 17.4% speak both English and French English Good morning Goodbye Please Thank you French Bonjour Au revoir S'il vous plaît Merci

6 What are some popular foods? Maple Syrup Montreal Style Bagels (boiled in honey sweetened water and baked in a wood-fire oven) Nanaimo Bar (dessert bar with a crumb layer, custard flavored butter icing, and melted chocolate) Poutine (fries with cheese curds and gravy) Canadian Bacon Baked Beans (flavored with maple syrup)

7 Inuit The Inuit are native people that live in the arctic region of Canada. They hunt whales, walrus, caribou, seal, polar bears, muskoxen, birds, and fish. Their clothes are made of animal skins. They traditionally lived in igloos in the cold weather and tents in the warmer weather.

8 What else do the Inuit people of Canada eat? Salmon is eaten fresh or smoked dry to create a jerky-like food known as salmon jerky. Whipped soapberries are like ice cream. Muktuk is whale skin and blubber. It is eaten plain or dipped in soy sauce.

9 Maple Syrup Maple syrup was first collected and used by the native people of Canada. Canada is the world's largest producer of maple syrup. The first syrups were made by repeatedly freezing the collected maple sap and removing the ice to concentrate the sugar in the remaining sap. An Ojibwe woman tapping a tree for sap to be made into maple syrup, 1908.

10 What are some things I d see in Canada? The Canadian Flag

11 Banff National Park Banff National Park is Canada s oldest park. It is in Alberta s Rocky Mountains. There are moose, bighorn sheep, grizzly and black bears, and mountain goats there.

12 Winter Carnival Since 1894, Quebec City has held a winter carnival. Some of the activities include snow sculpting, ice canoe races, night parades, and an ice palace.

13 Niagara Falls Niagara Falls is a set of three waterfalls that are on the border between Canada and the United States. The largest waterfall is Horseshoe Falls which is mostly in Canada. Over the years some people have tried to walk across Niagara Falls on a tightrope or go over the falls in a barrel. Some survived. Some didn t. Annie Taylor was the first person to survive going over the falls in a barrel. She did this on her 63 rd birthday in 1901.

14 Viking Settlement L'Anse aux Meadows is an archaeological site on Newfoundland. It is the most famous site where Vikings used to live in Canada around the year 1000 A.D.

15 Sports Some popular sports in Canada are hockey, lacrosse, baseball, basketball, skiing, and Canadian football.

16 Rodeos Rodeo stampedes are popular in Canada. The Calgary Stampede is the most famous one. There is a rodeo, dancing, and wagon racing.

17 Terry Fox Terry Fox ( ) was an athlete who lost his leg to cancer. He tried to run across Canada to raise money for cancer research. He ran for 143 days and 3,339 miles before his cancer caused him to stop, and ultimately cost him his life. Now the Terry Fox Run is the world's largest one-day fundraiser for cancer research. Over $600 million has been raised in his name. The pink line on the map shows how far Terry ran across Canada!

18 Mounties The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (also called Mounties) is the police force of Canada. Their motto is defend the law.

19 National Anthem O Canada is Canada s national anthem. It was written in French first, and then was translated to English later. Lyrics to O Canada - O Canada! Our home and native land! True patriot love in all thy sons command. With glowing hearts we see thee rise, The True North strong and free! From far and wide, O Canada, we stand on guard for thee. 21 Tom Thomson Tom Thomson ( ) was a famous painter from Canada. He painted landscapes with big brush strokes and thick paint.

23 Totem Poles Totem poles are tall sculptures carved on poles made from large tree trunks. They are carved by native people of the Pacific Northwest. Carvings of animals and other characters represent parts of a story or something about their family.
