1 June 2017 Useful Information If you need something placed in the Bubbles, you must have it to the editor no later than the 10 th of the month preceding the issue in which it should appear...even earlier is better: To view this newsletter online, type: into your browser address bar. If you want it ed to you, please contact me at the above address. REMINDER If you wish to receive the Bubbles via , please be sure that your address is on file with the editor. This way you will not miss a thing. Carole Burrows is continuing Bob s project of collecting used eyeglasses, cases, and cell phones for the Lions Club. A collection box is located on a shelf in the clubhouse for this purpose. Thank you for your continued support. If you are in need of temporary medical equipment such as a transport chair, crutches, walkers, bedside commode, riser toilet seat, canes, please contact: Eva Watson # If someone you know is under the weather, had a recent surgery, needs a caring thought, please be sure to contact Aleta Nybakke (# ) 1
2 Please remember that there are dumpsters located behind the clubhouse specifically for recycling: cardboard (broken down and flattened), paper, plastics (#1 & #2), cans. Please do not fill up the garbage dumpsters with these items. Do not leave glass beer bottles by the dumpsters (see below). Your use of the recycle bins benefits the association. You may recycle your old household batteries in the basket provided on the front counter in the clubhouse. **NEW** GLASS RECYCLING IS NOW AVAILABLE Any food or beverage container made of glass can be recycled. When my car trunk is full, I'll make a run, so you can bring well-rinsed glass containers to me (Carolyn Taylor) at Lot 127, or you can call/text me at and I'll pick it up from you. As I have no idea how much glass will be recycled in our park, I'm just guessing that I can handle this alone. Should I be underestimating the amount, I may need help. If you have a truck or SUV and would be willing to assist if necessary, please let me know. The Association won't receive any rebate for this but, as with hazardous waste and battery recycling, we can contribute to reducing pollution. Fountain East Security Patrol Our evening security patrol is a volunteer opportunity for you to help keep our park safe and secure; however, it is every resident s responsibility to be aware of suspicious activity and/or people in the park. If you feel something is not right, if you see someone on a bicycle or walking in the park who does not belong, you should contact the POLICE immediately. With so many of our residents gone, we must remember that it is the responsibility of each of us to secure our homes. As residents, we should also be aware of what may be happening at our absent neighbor s home...your vigilance keeps all of us safe and secure. If you would like to participate in our evening security patrol, please contact: Bob Clark (# ) FROM THE MANAGER Work on the pool has FINALLY begun!! Several issues had to be resolved and approved by the city inspector. I know it has been a big inconvenience for everyone, but it will be worth it when it is completed. We have begun the landscaping around the clubhouse and will continue into the pool area afterwards in order to fill in where the cactus and century plants were removed. The cell module has been installed on the front gate, and I am currently entering resident phone numbers into the system. The gate went into 24/7 closure beginning the middle of May with the old code still active until June 1. At that time a new code will go into effect. Eventually the code will go away altogether, and your only access to the front gate will be through phone (cell or regular) or clicker. Instructions and information on using this system are being sent to residents. While your current clicker will continue to work, you may also update to a new model. We will have one that clips on your visor for $15.00 or a new key fob style which is much smaller for $ This system was very expensive, and it has been designed to be as easy as it can be, but it will only help keep the undesirable people out of the park if you only let the people you are expecting through the gate. I have received three quotes for a new surveillance system for the front gate and common areas around the clubhouse. They have been forwarded to corporate for consideration and approval. They are all comparative in cost (around $17,000). Since it has to be paid for somehow, I have decided that the shuffleboard courts will have to wait. I believe you all will agree that the security of our community is a priority so we must take care of this first. I hope this finds everyone well. Take care, and we will talk again next month. Bill Walker, Fountain East Manager 2

4 June is National Rose Month. Roses have a long and colorful history. They have been symbols of love, beauty, war and politics. On November 20, 1986 President Ronald Reagan signed a resolution making the rose the national floral emblem at a ceremony in the White House Rose Garden. Americans have always loved the flowers with which God decorates our land. More often than any other flower, we hold the rose dear as the symbol of life and love and devotion, of beauty and eternity. For the love of man and woman, for the love of mankind and God, for the love of country, Americans who would speak the language of the heart do so with a rose. The Congress, by Senate Joint Resolution 159, has designated the rose as the National Floral Emblem of the United States and authorized and requested the President to issue a proclamation declaring this fact. NOW, THEREFORE, I, RONALD REAGAN, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim the rose as the National Floral emblem of the United States of America. The meaning of roses: the color of roses; the number of roses each has its meaning. Do you know that 11 roses represent "You are my treasured one; the one I love most in my life" whereas 15 roses represent "I am truly sorry, please forgive me"? The color of the rose...red Rose: Sincere Love & Respect, Courage & Passion; Pink Rose: Grace and Gentility, the rose of sweet thoughts; Yellow Rose: In the Victorian times, yellow roses meant jealousy, but today, they signify friendship, joy, gladness and freedom, the promise of a new beginning; White Rose: Spiritual love & Purity, the rose of confession, the bridal rose; "You are heavenly", "I am worthy of you"; Pinochle Tuesdays at 6:30pm Clubhouse Poker Wednesdays at 6:00pm Saturdays at 10:30am Billiards Room Dominos Wednesdays at 6:30pm Clubhouse Cribbage Thursdays at 1:00pm Clubhouse Chase the Ace Thursdays after potluck Clubhouse Somba Fridays at 9:30am Saturdays at 6:30pm Clubhouse 4

11 With the days heating up, our menu ideas are chilling down. Soup is not something one associates with summer, but here are some cool summer ideas guaranteed to bring the temperature down at mealtime: GAZPACHO WITH SHRIMP Serves cups Clamato juice 2 medium cucumbers, peeled, seeded and diced ¼ cup minced fresh, or 2 tablespoons crumbed dried, basil leaves 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar 2 teaspoons pepper ½ pound shelled, cooked small shrimp (like salad shrimp) 1 large avocado 1 3-ounce package cream cheese, cut in ½-inch cubes Combine 3 cups juice and ½ of the cucumbers in blender; whirl until smooth. Pour mixture into a large bowl and stir in remaining juice, cucumber, basil, vinegar and pepper. Cover and chill until soup is cold, at least 1 hour or up to 1 day. When ready to serve, ladle into bowls and garnish with shrimp, cubed avocado and cheese cubes. Season with salt and pepper and Tabasco, if desired. * This soup is nice served in a tall stemmed glass. VICHYSSOISE (Cold Potato Soup) Serves 5 The hardest part of this recipe is pronouncing the name! 2 leeks, chopped, white and green parts only 1 onion, chopped 2 tablespoons unsalted butter ¾ cup thinly sliced potatoes 2a cups chicken stock salt to taste ground black pepper to taste 1c cups heavy whipping cream Gently sweat the chopped leeks and the chopped onion in butter or margarine until soft, about 8 minutes. Do NOT let them brown. Add potatoes and stock to the saucepan. Salt and pepper to taste; do not overdo them! Bring to the boil, and simmer very gently for 30 minutes. Puree in a blender or food processor until very smooth. Cool. Gently stir in the cream before serving. 11
