Gladufoundus, the convivial, if sort of figmented proprietor of the Old Naples Pub, the Village Pub, and the Island Pub, has a thing for small, out-of-the-way places. He s not the kind of guy to get all poetic about intimate, casual interior spaces and interpersonal connections but that s exactly the kind of places he built: funky little joints where you can loosen up, have a beer and a burger or an iced tea and a salad, listen to live music, and rub elbows with locals and visitors alike. Now, pubs are traditionally small, local hangouts and you don t go to a pub to be anonymous. That s what those chain fern-bars are for. When people say, I ll meet you at the Pub! nobody has to ask which pub. They just know. When a visitor drops in to a pub, they cease to be strangers and begin to be friends the kind of friend that could tell you if you have ketchup on your shirt or you have beer foam on your upper lip. Wouldn t you hope your friends would tell you something like that? Well, that s just the kind of pub Arnt built. When Arnt built the Old Naples Pub off Third Street South, he just wanted somewhere he and his friends and family could have a decent bratwurst and a good time. He and his buddies built that place by hand one summer. They built every table, every bench, they hammered and sanded every board in that floor. His wife found the piano at a local sale and all the interesting articles and photos from friends and family and old newspapers. And people have been adding to it ever since they send postcards, wedding invitations, birth announcements, their grandpa s mounted fish. One regular customer was even buried in his Old Naples Pub T-shirt. Arnt still misses him. Arnt s proud of the place he s built in the neighborhood. But he s not all uppity about it.
