More information on the Developmental s can be found on the Search Institute website: Thank you to our... 2 To share meals and family time together. That help young people grow up healthy, caring and responsible. Pledge to have at least 3 meals together per week, for at least 45 minutes each meal. Visit our website for more details Prepare meals together with fun and easy recipes. Family-friendly activities that everyone can enjoy, at the table or after the meal. Track your progress and celebrate how much family time you have together! Building s for Young Children Support Answer children s questions. Empowerment Ask children s opinions about what they like and do not like in their daily routines. Make changes based on some of their ideas. Boundaries and Expectations Be consistent with the consequences for violating boundaries. Constructive Use of Time Teach children the skill of balancing their time so that they gradually learn how not to over-book or under-book their schedules. Commitment to Learning Set up a place for children to do homework and set daily homework guidelines. Positive Values Answer accurately and simply children s questions about sexuality and about alcohol and other drugs. Ask if they would like more information and respect their answers. Social Competence Emphasize that children should use words rather than actions to articulate their needs. Positive Identity Encourage children to seek out answers and solutions when they face obstacles or difficult times. Search Institute,
3 Positive Identity I like who I am! Conversation Starters Let s get this conversation started! A great way to spend time as a family is by talking with each other. Below are some statements or questions that can help guide conversation during mealtimes. Use two or three each meal, or create your own. Be sure to include everyone and encourage everyone to participate If you could spend one whole day with your best friend, what would you like to do? Describe something you are planning to do in the future. Describe a funny or silly thing that happened to someone else today. Share the most interesting new piece of music you have heard recently. Share the most interesting new movie or television show you have seen recently. If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go? What would you like to see there? What is the hardest thing you did today? What is the hardest thing you have ever done? What is the nicest thing you did for someone today? What is the nicest thing someone did for you? #38 Self Esteem: Supportive families work together on creating positive self identity. If our family could have any animal in the world as a pet, what would you like to have? Why?
