The Northwest has a tradition of producing high quality, small batch beers made locally or regionally. Craft Beer can mean different things to different people. In the Northwest, the Yakima Valley produces over 75% of the Hops grown in the United States. In 1982 Bert Grant, a Scottish immigrant, opened what is regarded as the first Micro Brewery and Brewpub in the Northwest. This came on the heels of President Carter signing into law the ability for individuals to brew beer in their homes. The pioneering efforts of Bert Grant combined with the abundance of hops and a skyrocketing interest in home brewing as a hobby led to the explosion of Craft Brewing. In 1978 there were 42 American Breweries compared to 2,000 Breweries in production in just over 30 years.
