Please do not make any marks on this Instruction sheet all answers will go on your provided answer sheet. Thank you! Osmosis and Diffusion in an Egg A FUN HOME PROJECT WITH PARENTS. *****ATTENTION**** Loss of this packet will cost 50 cents. Please take care. Objective: In this investigation, you will use an uncooked chicken egg to determine what happens during osmosis & diffusion across the membrane of the egg. Materials: 1 chicken egg masking tape & marker, (to mark the contents of the bottle each day/change). distilled water, (tap water can work but not as well). clear sugar syrup (Karo white corn syrup for example or regular maple syrup can be used) vinegar, clear jar with lid,(one of mom s canning jars will work) large serving spoon some food coloring (choose red or blue.. yellow is not best) paper towels
paper, pencil Procedure: Day 1 1. Label your jar with the word "vinegar". Write on the tape and stick to the jar. 2. Measure around the middle of the egg using a flexible sewing measuring tape. Remember to record and measure in centimeters (cm). Record in your table-the white copy. 3. Carefully place the egg into the jar & pour in enough vinegar to cover your egg. 4. Loosely re-cap the jar & allow the jar to sit for 24 to 48 hours until the outer calcium shell is removed. Day 2/3 1. Open the jar & pour off the vinegar. 2. Use a large spoon to carefully remove the egg to a paper towel & pat it dry. If you find remains of egg shell you may VERY carefully smooth it off with your finger VERY GENTLY. 3. Use your tape measure and record the new size & appearance of your egg in your data table. 4. Clean and re-label the jar with the word salt water. (The salt water is best made in another container which you then pour into your labeled jar. Make with a cup of warm water and 4 tablespoon of salt. Stir well to be sure the salt is dissolved. If some salt remains undissolved, add 1 tablespoon of water and stir again. 5. Carefully place the egg into the jar & cover the egg with the salt water. 6. Loosely re-cap the jar & allow it to sit for 24 hours.
Day 3/4 1. Open the jar & discard the salt water. 2. Use a large spoon to carefully remove the egg to a paper towel & pat it dry. 3. Measure and record the size & appearance of your egg in your data table. 4. Clean and re-label the jar with the word "syrup". 5. Carefully place the egg into the jar & cover the egg with clear syrup. 6. Loosely re-cap the jar & allow it to sit for 24 hours. Day 4/5 1. Open the jar & pour off the syrup. 2. Use your spoon to very carefully remove the egg & rinse off the excess syrup under very slow running water. 3. Pat the egg dry on a paper towel. 4. Measure your egg and record the size & appearance of your egg in your data table. 5. Clean up your work area and do not leave your parents a mess!!! 6. Now place your egg into the jar one last time and skip under the data table to see the final directions. : Make no Marks on this Instruction sheet---all data is to go onto your white worksheet.

Last Fun Part of the Egg Experiment. 1. Your egg is in the jar it is best to mix your colored distilled water in a different jar. The food color you choose is best if you use the darker ones like red, blue, or green. Yellow will work but not as well. Use about a cup or a cup and a half depending on the size of your jar. The egg must be covered to work best. Once it is mixed, carefully pour the colored water over the egg in the jar. Cover it again and let it set until tomorrow. Refer to your data sheet for the remaining instructions and questions. Day 5/6-Last day! 1. Carefully pour off the excess colored water; the egg is very fragile at this point so be very careful!! 2. Use a large spoon to lift the egg out and place on a paper towel. 3. Measure the diameter of your egg with the measuring tape and record it here: My last egg measurement was cm 4. Describe the appearance of your egg below: 5. Final and fun step be sure your egg has paper towels under it and you have extra towels to clean up any mess. Ready---- use a pin to make a small hole in your egg. Describe what you see: Why did this occur?
Questions & Conclusion: 1. Vinegar is made of acetic acid & water. Explain how it was able to remove the calcium shell. 2. (a) What happened to the size of the egg after remaining in vinegar? (b) Was there more or less liquid left in the jar? (c) Did water move into or out of the egg? 3. (a) What happened to the size of the egg after remaining in salt water? (b) Was there more or less liquid left in the jar? (c) Did water move into or out of the egg? 4. (a) What happened to the size of the egg after remaining in syrup? (b) Was there more or less liquid left in the jar?
(c) Did water move into or out of the egg? 5. Was the egg larger after remaining in saltwater or vinegar? 6. Was the egg larger after remaining in the colored distilled water? 7. Why are fresh vegetables sprinkled with water at markets? 8. Roads are sometimes salted to melt ice. What does this salting do to the plants along roadsides & why? **Parent signature (required) Date
