THE BOTANIST Brewery, Kew Cask Beers (% Alcohol by Volume) * Mild (3.5) Light coloured mild, better known in recent years as Original, but now reverted to its former name. * Bitter (3.8) Pale brown bitter with the malt and hops finely balanced, slight bittersweet aftertaste. * Dark Mild (3.0) Classic mild, but with some bitterness in the finish OK Bitter (4.2) A traditional English bitter with hints of malt and caramel. BRAINS, Cardiff * Dark (3.5) Thought to be relatively unchanged since 1882; noted beer writer Jeff Evans says that if this is not the best mild in the UK, it s damn near close. BUTTS, Great Shefford, Berks. CAIRNGORM, Aviemore, Highlands CASTLE ROCK, Nottingham COTLEIGH, Wiveliscombe, Somerset Barbus barbus (4.6) Organically-produced fruity hoppy bitter; hops are dominant, but with a hint of balancing sweetness. Golden Brown (5.0) Organic potent ale with a slight spiciness from the hop variety. The name, a tribute to The Stranglers, was changed for a while to Gordon Brown, but soon changed back. Black Gold (4.4) Scottish stout with roast malt, but with background sweetness; long dry bitter finish; SIBA Supreme Champion Beer of the Year Black Gold (3.8) Dark ruby mild, full-bodied and fairly bitter Harvest Pale (3.8) Refreshing pale yellow beer with lots of hop aromas and mellowing aftertaste. CAMRA s Champion Beer of Britain Barn Owl (4.5) Pale brown premium ale with good malt and hops balance right through to the Page 1

Hophead (3.8) Very popular light straw-coloured bitter with a clean bitterness from Cascade hops Espresso (4.2) Black stout-like beer with freshly-ground Arabica coffee beans added for a few minutes for a very distinctive taste. New Forest Ale (3.8) Bronze coloured bitter with a wellrounded flavour and distinctive hoppy bitterness Quadhop (3.9) Popular session bitter, combining four hop varieties for a full range of aromas and moreish bitterness. * Black Dog (3.6) Dry complex dark mild, with a hint of caramel sweetness. Highlander (4.8) Full-bodied bittersweet ale with a good dry hop finish more so than a traditional Scottish heavy. Wobble Gob (4.9) Brewed in a converted garage next to a village pub; deep ruby coloured beer using pale and dark crystal malts and torrefied wheat. Jem s Stout (4.3) Brewed on a farm a couple of miles from Withernsea (you won t find the village name on a map); a dark smooth beer with smoky, roasted malt flavours and aroma. Bottle Wreck Porter (4.7) Traditional black porter with chocolate, coffee and rich roast malt flavours. Named after beer found on a 19 th century wreck off Littlehampton Madgwick Gold (5.0) Celebrating the famous Goodwood Corner and Cup; fresh citrus spice hop aroma and flavour, very refreshing. * Black Country Bitter (3.9) Medium-bodied ale, light and wellbalanced, with a dry hoppy * Mild (3.2) Dark brown/red beer with strong roast flavours, but strong bitterness for a mild. * Hooky Dark (3.2) Chestnut brown easy-drinking mild, with an unusually long hoppy * Hooky Bitter (3.6) Classic session bitter, fruity hop aroma, balanced taste with a bitter Page 2

Manchester MAGPIE, Nottingham MIGHTY OAK, Maldon, Essex NORTH YORKSHIRE GFB (Gilbert s First Brew) (3.5) Light clean session bitter, hoppy aroma, good dry finish Hopfest (4.6) American and English hops combine to give a zesty, slightly resinous aroma and flavour; restrained bitter * Original Bitter (3.8) Pale brown, with a malty aroma and earthy hoppiness, good bitterness comes through in the Black (3.7) Mellow easy-drinking dark mild, with a hint of liquorice in the Beer Lost and so unavailable! Ossian (4.1) Well-balanced best bitter with sometimes dominant caramel overtones for a bittersweet character. Thrappledouser (4.3) Refreshing amber best bitter, crisp hoppy aroma with tangy quenching taste. * Bitter (3.5) Owner s Marston s wasted no time returning Jennings to working order after the 2009 floods, and we can again enjoy this malty beer, with roast flavours and a hoppy Hip Hop (4.0) Blonde beer, clean and crisp, pale malt flavour overtaken by a dry bitter Autumn-ale (4.4) Honey-coloured seasonal beer, using local Sussex hops for a spiced fruity aroma and subtle honeyed LSD (Langham Special Draught) (5.2) Auburn beer with a deep red glow and complex flavours; sweet maltiness is balanced by the dry * Bitter (4.0) Copper-coloured beer with malt and fruit in aroma. Taste and finish Moonraker (7.5) Reddish brown strong ale, rich and sweetish, with a fruity yet dry finish - not widely available. Thieving Rogue (4.5) Brewery is next to Notts County football ground, hence the name; a hoppy golden ale with a longlasting bitter Oscar Wilde (3.7) Roasty dark mild with hints of fruits and chocolate; initial sweetness leads to a more bitter finish; CAMRA s Champion Beer of Britain Cereal Killer (4.5) A light coloured organic wheat beer with a fine distinctive hop nose. White Dwarf (4.3) Both barley and wheat malts are used for this popular award-winning beer; strong dry and slightly astringent Bullion (4.7) Dark brown beer with maltiness predominating over a neat mix of hop and fruit tastes. Red MacGregor (4.0) Red by name and nature, a powerful smack of fruit and a clean fresh mouth-feel; well-balanced. * Best Bitter (4.2) Hop aroma and bitterness stay in the background in this predominantly malty bitter; some fruitiness in the aroma. * Tally Ho! (5.5) First brewed in 1949; complex dark old ale, with roast malts, treacle toffee and coffee flavours and long lingering + Hewish IPA (3.6) Light hoppy amber bitter with floral citrusy hop aroma. + Pitchfork (4.3) Yellow best bitter with pale malt and citrus hop aroma; but hops predominate giving a slightly astringent + Old Slug Porter (4.5) Complex slightly sour dark brown porter with lots of body and dark fruit flavours; smoky bittersour aftertaste. + Best Bitter (3.8) Malty session bitter with some toffee-like taste; short bittersweet + Fortyniner (4.9) Fruity biscuity aroma leads to a wellbalanced taste with malt fruit and hop flavours all present. * Unicorn Best Bitter (4.2) Amber beer with a fruity aroma; malt, fruit and hop flavours are all there, and in the Wandle Ale (3.8) Pale brown bitter with a slight dryness balanced by a sweetish malt flavour. Pale Ale (4.2) Summer seasonal ale, but still recently brewed, light golden ale, crisp, citrus fruits and pine on the palate, soft malty background with a dry bitter Powerhouse Porter (4.9) Modern take on the classic London porter style rich and complex from different malts, some coffee aroma; a seasonal beer already well liked. Barebones (4.7) Seasonal beer for October, a classic recipe, just Maris Otter and Amber malts, Fuggles and Goldings hops, and Nottingham ale yeast; delicate spicy aroma and flavour, dry Page 4

Pumpkin Ale (4.3) Our concession to Hallowe en; yes, pumpkin is added to the brew as a background to the American Summit hops, and a couple of cloves are thrown in. Shere Drop (4.2) Well-balanced and hoppy with a pleasant citrus aroma and fruitiness in the taste; dry bitter Albury Ruby (4.6) Warming dark winter beer with hints of blackcurrant in the aroma; beautifully balanced and smooth. Lord Marples (4.0) In honour of the man who opened the M1, a smooth traditional easy-drinking bitter, caramel and coffee flavours give way to a long, bitter Jaipur IPA (5.9) The Daddy of them all when it comes to IPAs, packed with citrus hoppiness balanced by some underlying sweetness and fruity flavours. * Original (3.6) Possibly your last chance to sample this iconic bitter whilst still brewed at the Star Brewery (Thwaites are moving); hop-driven yet well-balanced amber session bitter. * Best Bitter (4.0) Hops and fruit combine well with a nutty malt character; bitterness increases down the glass and lingers in the aftertaste. William Wallace (4.5) An 80/- Export style ale, dark and lightly hopped with a hint of caramel. Strange Brew (4.1) Dark golden ale, originally a blend of two others, but now a regular Hallowe en offering, brewed with five hop varieties four more added to the brew kettle. Autumn Blaze (4.4) Russet amber ale with gentle spicy character and pleasant maltiness, brewed with a mix of English and German hops. Naked Ladies (4.4) Named after the statues behind this hall, an outstanding spicy hop beer, with fruit overtones and a lasting bitterness. Black Beauty Porter (4.3) Initial malt, fruit and some sweetness is followed by an increasingly hoppy and dry Oatmeal Stout (4.8) Black and smooth with roast and chocolate malt, and coffee overtones. Windsor Knot (4.0) Amber ale first brewed for the Royal wedding, now a regular offering using Sovereign and Nelson (New Zealand) Sauvin hops New Zealand for a white wine fruitiness. Conqueror (5.0) Promoted as a Black IPA, a rich complex and distinctive ale, a blend of five malts, Summit and Cascade hops, for a pine hop aroma and intense roasted flavours. Bitter (3.7) Well-balanced full-bodied bitter with a complex hop bitterness; good aroma and distinctive flavour. Yorkshire Terrier (4.2) Refreshing and distinctive amber brew with fruit and hops dominating the aroma and taste; bitterness is long-lasting.
