1 SUMMER 2017 BIER IS A HUGE PART OF LOWLAND EUROPEAN CULTURE as integral as frites, cafés, and bicycles. And here at Café known as the Belgian Brewer s Guild. Each year, our Hollander, we love bier from sourcing unique biers to Brewminati council combs the breweries, monasteries and perfecting the way each is served in the proper glass. In cobblestone streets of Europe to meet with the monks, fact, a member of our Brewminati (our team of bier brewmasters and families who have made bier their experts) has even been named an Honorary Knight in passion for centuries. We hope you enjoy tasting these Belgian s Knighthood of the Brewer s Mashstaff, better unique biers as much as we enjoyed discovering them. A FEW NOTES ABOUT OUR BIERS WE DON T SERVE PINTS THERE WILL BE FOAM POUR SIZES WILL VARY Every Belgian brewery creates a specific, custom glass for each of their biers. The shape and size of a glass can drastically alter the appearance, aroma and taste of a bier, which is why we go through great lengths to import the proper glass supplied by the brewers of the biers we carry. Just check out the racks of glasses behind our bar to see for yourself. Now it s time to choose a bier and raise a (proper) glass! If you re not accustomed to Belgian biers, you may be surprised by the amount of head your bier is served with. A large portion of the experience of Belgian biers is olfactory and the flavor of the bier is greatly impacted by what your nose is doing at the time of quaffing. Please realize this is how the brewer intended the bier to be served and we go through great lengths to make each pour as proper as possible. Many of the specialty biers we carry are well over 10% alcohol and are therefore poured in smaller quantities than the more sessionable biers you may be used to. This is why we include pour-sizes on our menus so you can be assured that your pour is intentional. Many of our imported glasses even feature pour lines that indicate where the liquid portion of the bier should be! TANDEM DUBBEL 7% 30CL $7 / CARAFE $18 ERTVELDE, BELGIUM: A collaboration with Brouwerij Van Steenberge. Pours a rich chocolate brown with fine carbonation and flavors of malt, tart raisins, plums, cocoa, and caramel. Warms in the end, finishing creamy and rich. Has a bit of creaminess and just the right amount of zing. This is, truly, the witbier all other witbiers aspire to be. CENTRAAL QUADDER 9% 25CL $7 / CARAFE $17 AMHERST, WI: Our collaboration with Central Waters Brewing is big and Belgian but brewed by our friends right in Amherst, Wisconsin. This is a surprisingly easy drinking, strong yet not too sweet quad with huge flavor and character. NEW FOR 2017! Cloudy gold appearance, sweet with spices of coriander and orange peel with a slight hoppiness. Leave it to Surly to put its own spin on what the rest of the world is getting into a touch of malt sweetness makes this refreshing pale a delicious, unique, Americanized version of a classic English-style bitter. CUVÉE DES TROLLS 7% PIPAIX, BELGIUM: A Belgian pale ale that is mild and mellow with citrus undertones. A hint of hops leave a lingering, fruity aftertaste. KWAK 8.4% 20CL $6.5 / 30CL $8.5 BUGGENHOUT, BELGIUM: A Belgian strong pale ale with a rich, amber color and sweet, malty aroma. Flavors of caramelized banana, licorice, and coriander with a mild hop bitterness. 3 IPAS & BELGIAN IPAS NEW BELGIUM CITRADELIC: TANGERINE IPA 6% 44CL $6 FORT COLLINS, CO: It s juicy, it s tropical, it s hoppy it s essentially tangerine-flavored sunshine in a glass. What better way to celebrate summer than with this palate-pleaser of an IPA? HOUBLON CHOUFFE 9% 25CL $9 ACHOUFFE, LUXEMBOURG: Those rascally Chouffe gnomes combined three American and European hop varieties with Belgian yeasts to create a cross between a double IPA and a Belgian Tripel. Aromas of citrus and yeast, spicy hop bitterness, sweet malts and notes of lemon. SINGLES, GOLDENS, & BLONDE ALES TROUBADOUR BLOND 6.5% 25CL $7 URSEL, BELGIUM: A little hop spice and a dash of fruity yeast esters take this blonde from basic to exquisite! If you have never had a bier from these brilliant brewmeisters, we highly suggest this gem. Refreshing, fulfilling, and downright delectable. PIRAAT 10.5% ERTVELDE, BELGIUM: A golden, Belgian strong ale with a slight honey sweetness, faint citrusy hops, and notes of figs and golden raisins. The crisp finish is balanced well by a boozy warmth. CORNET 8.5% 30CL $8 STEENHUFFEL, BELGIUM: We're the only place in the US you can get this rare bier! Cornet is a strong Belgian blonde with a woody flavor and vanilla notes. Brewed in oak barrels, it's almost wine-like in texture, and its sophistication is only matched by the 17th century cellars of Diepensteyn Castle, where the first casks of this bier were stored. DUBBELS PERENNIAL SAISON DE LIS 5% 33CL $6 ST. LOUIS, MO: Sip back and relax with this soothing, chamomile-laced saison. It s got all the soft, earthy notes you want from a farmhouse ale, but with a big, beautiful, floral bouquet. Get it while you can, but don't fret once she blows, we'll have another delicious offering from Perennial, made specially for our wonderful Lowlands guests! UNIBROUE À TOUT LE MONDE 4.5% 33CL $7 CHAMBLY, CANADA: To everyone! This sessionable, dry-hopped Saison is a perfect patio-pounder, but don t let its delicate ABV fool you it was created in collaboration with, and named in honor of, the hardcore metal band Megadeth. Rock out with your hops out, friends. GOOSE ISLAND SOFIE 6.5% 33CL $6.5 CHICAGO, IL: This beautiful representation of a classic farmhouse ale is fermented with wild yeast, then aged in wine barrels. The addition of orange peel enhances its spicy, white pepper undertones! BOULEVARD GINGER LEMON RADLER 4.1% 33CL $6 KANSAS CITY, MO: You don t have to be a traditional German radler (aka cyclist ) to enjoy this refreshing spin on the classic lemonade and bier mash-up. A hint of ginger prevents this summer staple from being too sweet! STELLA ARTOIS CIDRE 4.5% 40CL $6.5 LEUVEN, BELGIUM: Sweet apple flavors, tart wheat ale-like grainy notes, spicy and fruity notes. Everything you want in a cider, sans all that juicy-juice sweetness. GRIMBERGEN DUBBEL 6.5% 30CL $6.5 MECHELEN, BELGIUM: A dark burgundy, full-bodied brew sweetened with rich malts and dark candi sugar. Brewed with lime zest, grains of paradise and lemongrass, this modern twist on the classic farmhouse ale is a refreshing patio pounder made for summer. STELLA ARTOIS STELLA ARTOIS 5% 40cl $6.5 Leuven, Vlaams-Brabant: Crisp, clean, and brewed to perfection using the original Stella Artois yeast and celebrated Saaz hops. This bier was originally brewed as a Christmas bier, but we love it year-round! BELL'S OBERON ALE BELL'S 5.8% 44cl $6 Galesburg, MI: This wholly American witbier is really a true sign that summer has come to the Midwest. Hoppier than your average wit and without the addition of orange or coriander spice, this bier holds its own against any summer sipper it goes up against! SINGLES, GOLDENS & BLONDE ALES KWAREMONT BLONDE BROUWERIJ DE BRABANDERE (BAVIK) 6.6% 25cl $8 Bavikhove, West-Vlaanderen: This Blonde is just like the killer climb of the Oude Kwaremont in the Flemish Ardennes: fiery and packed with character. A full-malt bier that delivers just the right amount of sweetness. GUAVA LIBRE THE BRUERY 7.5% 25cl $8 Placentia, CA: This unique fruity cream ale a collaboration between The Bruery in California and Funky Buddha Brewery in Florida is a delicious and inspired bier based on the Cuban dessert "pastelitos de guayaba". And wait, there s more! In Wisconsin, this beautiful treat is exclusive to our Lowlands restaurants! FOUNDERS RÜBÆUS FOUNDERS 5.7% 44cl $7.5 Grand Rapids, MI: By adding fresh raspberries at various stages throughout the brewing process, this bier is anything but your average fruity witbier. A hefty malt backbone and the addition of nitro pump up this bier s already balanced sweettart ratio. NEW GLARUS SERENDIPITY NEW GLARUS 4% 31.1cl $6.5 New Glarus, WI: Brewed with apples, cranberries, and cherries? Oh my! This bier is the happy accident of Wisconsin's favorite fruit aged in oak with an almost magical wild fermentation. Like any blessing in disguise, it's a little sweet, and a little sour. SOURS & LAMBICS LIPS OF FAITH SERIES NEW BELGIUM 6.5% 31.1cl $6.5 Fort Collins, CO: Lips of Faith is a line from New Belgium that uses imagination to create small batch bier brewed for faithful lips. PETRUS SOUR APRICOT BROUWERIJ DE BRABANDERE (BAVIK) 7.3% 25cl $8.5 Bavikhove, West-Vlaanderen: Petrus Sour Apricot is a blend of the famous petrus Aged Pale and fresh Apricots. Without overpowering fruit flavors or sweetness, fresh Apricots subtly meld with the mother beer creating a unique, complimentary, one of a kind sour ale! BACCHUS BROUWERIJ VAN HONSEBROUCK 4.5% 33cl $8 Ingelmunster, West-Vlaanderen: The perfect bier to name after the Roman god of wine. This traditional Oud Bruin has whispers of oak and rich tannin a beautiful balance of sweet and soft tartness. Complex, delicate, and refreshing.
