3 Renapro Renapro is a powdered high protein concentrate that has a low phosphate and low potassium content. Renapro is a Food for Special Medical Purposes. Presentation Renapro has a powdered milk-like taste. Renapro is available in 30 x 20g sachets per box (600g). Recommended Intake Renapro must always be used under medical supervision. Renapro must only be used according to medical instructions taking into account the nutritional condition and nutritional requirements of the patient. Haemodialysis patients: 20g (1 sachet) Peritoneal dialysis patients: 20-40g (1-2 sachets) Indications Renapro is indicated for the dietary management of dialysis patients with catabolism, cachexia, hyperphosphataemia where there is a need for increased protein intake. Contraindications Renapro is not a complete food and is not suitable for use as a sole source of nutrition. Renapro should not be used with children under 1 year of age. Persons who are allergic to cow s milk or who have absorption problems should not consume Renapro. Renapro is not for parenteral use. Storage Store Renapro in a dry place, not above room temperature. Premixed solutions of Renapro should be stored in a refrigerator and used within 24 hours. 4 Directions for use Only use Renapro in foods and drinks allowed by your dietitian. Count all fluids in your daily allowance. Renapro dissolves easily in either cold or warm liquid. Renapro is suitable for enriching the protein content of liquid and tube feed diets. Renapro can be mixed in 60 ml of water. Pour 60ml of water into a jug, large glass or mug. Add a 20g sachet of Renapro. Mix with a whisk or fork until smooth. Or alternatively you may mix Renapro in a shaker. Drinks Renapro must be fully dissolved when added to liquids such as liquid diet preparations. Foods Renapro can be thinly sprinkled and stirred into most foods. 4 Renapro

Yes Renapro can be added to food and drinks - simply sprinkle directly on food and stir thoroughly or mix with water until smooth then add some flavouring according to your preference e.g. Crusha, Nesquik, fruit cordial. Can Renapro be incorporated into family meals? Yes it can. Simply add a full sachet to the final meal portion in the pot / dish and mix thoroughly. If a full sachet is not used in one meal / drink can the remainder of the sachet still be reused? Yes provided the sachet is kept air tight, stored hygienically and used within the same day. How long can fortified drinks / foods be stored in the fridge? Fortified Renapro drinks / liquids can be kept refrigerated for up to 24 hours. 7 Quick and Easy Options In Food Renapro can be added directly into food. Simply sprinkle a full Renapro sachet into food and stir thoroughly. For example: soups, casseroles, pasta sauces, dhals, curries, stews and mince meat, scrambled eggs (just before serving as Renapro thickens the eggs), yoghurts and fromage frais, breakfast cereals, custards, rice puddings. Another alternative is to make Renapro into a paste before adding to food. Simply add 1-2 tablespoons of warm water (not boiling) to a full sachet of Renapro and mix with a fork until smooth. For example: mashed potato, porridge, etc. In Drinks Renapro can also be used to fortify 1/3 pint of milk and used in teas and coffees. Fortified milk can be kept refrigerated for up to 24 hours. Other Suggestions 30 ml option Mix a full sachet of Renapro in a bowl with 30ml (2 tablespoons) of warm water (not boiling). Flavour to taste by adding 2.5ml ( 1 /2 teaspoon) of Crusha, or fruit cordial. Nesquik option Mix a full sachet of Renapro in a bowl with 30ml (2 tablespoons) of room temperature milk until smooth. Flavour with 1 teaspoon of Nesquik powder. Yakult option Mix a full sachet of Renapro in a bowl with 1 bottle (65ml) of Yakult (fermented skimmed milk drink) for 2-3 minutes until smooth. Ice-lolly / ice-cube option Mix a full sachet of Renapro in a bowl with 30ml (2 tablespoons) of warm water (not boiling) until smooth. To flavour add 10ml (2 teaspoons) of fruit cordial or Robinsons concentrate. Pour into ice-lolly makers or ice-cube trays/ ice-bags and freeze. Renapro 7

8 Honey option Mix a full sachet of Renapro in a bowl with 30 ml (2 tablespoons) of warm water (not boiling) to a smooth paste. Add 10ml (2 teaspoons) of honey to flavour. Syrup option Mix a full sachet of Renapro in a bowl with 30ml (2 tablespoons) of warm water (not boiling) until a smooth paste. Add 10ml (2 teaspoons) of syrup to flavour. Renapro Recipes Jelly Ingredients 3 /4 packet of flavoured jelly 100ml boiling water 100ml cold water (optional) 1 sachet (20g) Renapro Method Place the jelly cubes in a bowl and add 100ml of boiling water. Alternatively place jelly cubes into a microwavable jug, add 100 ml water and heat for approximately 1 minute (based on a 750 watt microwave oven). Stir until completely dissolved. Allow to cool naturally or pour in 100ml of cold water (optional). When cool stir in full sachet of Renapro until smooth. Pour into a bowl and refrigerate to set. 1-2 servings. 8 Renapro

9 Biscuits Ingredients 100g / 4oz butter 100g / 2oz plain sieved flour. 50g / 2oz caster sugar 1 sachet (20g) Renapro Method Preheat oven at 190 o C /375 o F/Gas mark 5. Mix Renapro with flour. Cream the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy. Add the Renapro /flour mix to the butter/sugar mix and knead lightly until smooth. Roll out to about 1/4 inch thick (5-10 mm), cut into rounds with a fluted cutter. Place on a baking tray lined with greaseproof paper. Place in the pre-heated oven and bake for minutes. 10 Scones Ingredients 225g / 8oz self raising flour 50g / 2oz sultanas 1 sachet (20g) Renapro 50g / 2oz butter 50g / 2oz caster sugar 1 egg Zest of 1 large orange Pinch of salt Sufficient milk to make up 150ml with the egg Method Preheat oven at 220 o C/425 o F/Gas mark 7. Lightly grease a baking tray. Mix flour and salt into a bowl. Then rub in the margarine and stir in the sugar, Renapro, fruit and zest. Add milk and egg mixture reserving a little for brushing over the tops of the scones. Knead very lightly on a floured surface and roll out to 1 cm thickness. Cut into 6.5 cm rounds. Re-roll the trimmings and cut more scones. Brush the tops with the egg and milk mixture and bake for approximately 10 minutes. Freeze any left over scones only keep fresh for one day. Makes 8 scones. 11 Tangy Lemon Drizzle Cake Ingredients 225g / 7.9oz butter or margarine 225g / 7.9oz caster sugar 185g / 6.5oz self raising flour 2 sachets (2 x 20g) Renapro 4 beaten eggs Rind and juice of 2 lemons Method For the drizzle 175g / 6oz caster sugar 75ml water Juice of 3 lemons Pre-heat oven at 180 o C/350 o F/Gas mark 4. In a bowl cream together the butter and lemon rind. Beat in the sugar and eggs then fold in the flour and Renapro. Quickly add the juice of two lemons and continue to mix until smooth. Spoon the mixture between 12 muffin cases, place in the pre-heated oven and bake for minutes or until lightly browned on top. Make the syrup by adding the ingredients to a pan warming gently and bringing to the boil and allowing to bubble for a minute. Serve warm with the syrup drizzled over the top. Alternatively allow the cakes to cool slightly then pour the syrup over the cakes allowing them to soak in for 30 minutes & serve as a between meal snack. Makes 12 muffin size cakes.. 12 Fruit Crumble Ingredients 75g / 3oz butter 75g / 3oz oat flakes 75g / 3oz plain flour 75g / 3oz demerara sugar 1 sachet (20g) Renapro 1 large tin fruit pie filling Method Preheat oven at 180 o C/350 o F/Gas mark 4. Mix Renapro with flour. Cream the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy. Rub the butter into the flour/ Renapro mix to form fine crumbs. Stir in the sugar and oat flakes. Spread over the tinned mixed fruit. Press down the crumble mix and bake in the pre-heated oven for minutes. 3 servings. 12 Renapro

13 Tiramisu Ingredients 397g / 14oz condensed milk (can) 500g / 17.6oz mascarpone cheese 150g / 5.29oz sponge finger biscuits Approx 100ml cold strong coffee 1 sachet (20g) Renapro Method Combine the condensed milk and mascarpone cheese and mix well. Stir in 1 sachet of Renapro powder. Dip the sponge fingers in the coffee (don t soak the biscuits as they will disintegrate). Place a layer of the dipped biscuits at the bottom of a serving dish. Cover with a layer of the cheese mixture followed by a further layer of dipped biscuits. Finish with a final layer of cheese mixture and dust with cocoa power. 8 servings. 14 Meatballs Ingredients 450g / 18.87oz lean minced beef / lamb 1 sachet (20g) Renapro 1 medium egg 1 medium onion finely chopped 1 clove of crushed garlic 3 tablespoons of breadcrumbs 3 tablespoons of warm water Pepper to taste For the sauce 700g tinned tomatoes 125ml milk 1 clove of chopped garlic 2 teaspoons tomato puree 1 /2 onion chopped coarsely 1 /2 teaspoon sugar 1 teaspoon dried mixed herbs 1 tablespoon olive oil 25g unsalted butter Method Place meat, crushed garlic and breadcrumbs into a bowl. Dissolve Renapro in 3 tablespoons of warm water and mix in with the egg. Pour liquid over meat and mix together. Season well. Roll into small balls. Put the meat balls onto a lined tray with cling film and place in the fridge until firm (30 minutes) while making the sauce. Chop the garlic and onion then place into a bowl. Blend using a hand blender until an onion-garlic pulp. Heat oil and butter in a frying pan and fry the mixture gently for 10 minutes. Stir occasionally to avoid burning. Place the tomatoes, tomato puree, herbs and sugar into a bowl and use a hand blender to make into a smooth sauce. Add this sauce to the onion-garlic mixture and simmer for 10 minutes. Add milk gradually while stirring, bring liquid back to the boil. Once sauce is boiling add the required number of meatballs to the sauce. Cook for 20 minutes do not stir. Serve with pasta or a bed of rice. The meat balls will freeze easily or keep chilled and uncooked for a day, and then cook as required. It s not necessary to liquidise the sauce if a blender is not available. Makes meat balls. 4 servings. 15 Homemade Burgers Ingredients 225g /8oz / 1 /2 lb lean minced meat (beef, lamb or other) 50g / 2oz onion (boiled and finely chopped) 50g / 2oz carrot (boiled and finely chopped) 50g / 2oz breadcrumbs 1 sachet (20g) Renapro (mix with the breadcrumbs) 1 /2 teaspoon mixed herbs 1 small egg lightly beaten Pepper to taste Method Mix all the ingredients in a bowl and bind with the beaten egg. Shape into burger sized portions by hand or with a burger press. Grill or barbecue until cooked. 2 servings. Renapro 15

16 Shepherds Pie Ingredients 450g / 15.9oz minced beef/lamb 1 tablespoon oil 3-4 drops worcestershire sauce 1 chopped onion 300 ml boiling water 1 beef stock cube 700g / 24.7oz potatoes 25g grated cheese Knob of butter 1 sachet (20g) Renapro Method Pre-heat oven at 200 C/400 F/Gas mark 6. Fry the chopped onion in the oil. Add the meat and brown. Add boiling water to the stock cube and add to the meat mixture. Add a few drops of worcestershire sauce and simmer for minutes until the juices are reduced. Boil the potatoes and mash with the butter. Stir in the Renapro. Transfer the meat mixture to a serving dish and cover with the potato mixture. Sprinkle with grated cheese, place in preheated oven and bake for 30 minutes. 4 servings. 17 Lentil Dahl Ingredients 1 sachet (20g) Renapro 1 inch piece chopped fresh ginger 225g / 7.9oz dried red lentils 1 small chopped red chilli 2 medium onions 1 medium carrot, grated 6 cloves garlic, sliced 2 teaspoons cumin seeds 1 teaspoon turmeric 6 cloves 150 ml coconut milk 300 ml water 1 teaspoon sugar Pinch pepper 200 ml double cream Chopped fresh coriander Method Use a heavy based pan to slowly fry the onions in butter until they are starting to brown (15 minutes). Add the garlic, fresh ginger (not dried), carrot, chilli, cumin seeds and cloves, cooking gently for 3 minutes. Mix the sachet of Renapro with the coconut milk until dissolved. Add the lentils, water, turmeric, and coconut milk/renapro mixture. Place a lid on the pan and allow it to cook very gently for minutes, or until the lentils are tender. Do not allow it to boil. Stir through the double cream. Add the juice and zest of the lime. Season with pepper and garnish with the chopped coriander. Serve with warm chapattis and a fresh green salad. 4 servings. 18 Protein Packed Spanish Omelette Ingredients 1 medium onion 3 tablespoons oil 5 large eggs 1 sachet (20g) Renapro Pepper to taste 300g (10.5oz) par boiled potatoes/canned potatoes Method Fry the sliced onion and potato with 2 tablespoons of oil on a gentle heat for 20 minutes and season with pepper. (To reduce potassium either par-boil the potatoes first or buy tinned potatoes). Whisk the eggs and season. Placed cooked onion and potato in bowl with egg, add a sachet of Renapro and mix together. Add 1 tablespoon of oil to frying pan on a medium heat. Pour the mixture back into the frying pan and heat on a low setting for 20 minutes remembering to turn halfway (or cook the top under a medium grill till set). Once no liquid egg is evident on both sides the omelette is ready to serve. Serve with mashed potato or a small serving of salad. If your appetite is poor consider adding butter to the mash or mayonnaise to the salad to increase calories. 4 servings. 19 Tuna Pasta Salad Ingredients 100g / 4oz pasta Small tin of tuna in oil (olive or sunflower) 1 /2 tablespoon olive oil 1 sachet (20g) Renapro Mixed herbs to taste Method Cook the pasta as preferred, drain and place into a bowl. Add 1 /2 tablespoon of olive oil and mix. Add mixed herbs and mix. Add peas and other vegetables as desired and allow to cool. Drain tuna and empty into a second bowl. No Renergy is not suitable for patients with an allergy to dairy products. It is also unsuitable for patients with absorption and digestive problems. Can Renergy be divided over mealtimes?
