2 Beverage Menu Official cocktail history starts around the beginning of the 19th century. The first known printed use of the word cocktail was in 1803 in an article in the Farmer s Cabinet (Amherst, New Hampshire, April 28, 1803). It refers to a guy with a hangover who drank a glass of cocktail excellent for the head.... Prohibition in the USA led to a huge illegal alcohol industry, ran by organised crime gangs. During the same time, speakeasies (bars with restaurants and sometimes clubs) became very popular. Often the bartenders would mix alcohol with a number of other ingredients like creams and juices to both hide it from the police (at least by the looks of it) and disguise the poor taste of the alcohol. Cocktail history is filled with colourful legends. No-one is quite sure where the word cocktail comes from and there are many theories and interesting stories. One such story talks about a female tavern owner who decorated her drinks with the tail feathers of her neighbour s rooster. We like to believe that tail feathers of cocks were used in those early days to decorate and stir drinks and hence the name cocktail. 3 Martinis pts The origins of the Martini will be debated as long as there are bars in the world. Many claim that a Cocktail Waiter by the name of Martini mixed the first at the Knickerbocker Hotel in New York in the late 19th Century, while others claim that the drink was first made in Julio Richelieu s Saloon in Martinez, California in 1870 which claims to this day as being the birthplace of the Martini. 4 Sours pts Non Alcoholic Cocktails pts Sours are believed to have been first made around 1850 and were originally made with Brandy. The Sour is a hugely versatile cocktail in which almost any spirit can be used, but works best with Whiskeys. The name comes from the bite of half a lemon which is obvious after the first sip. When she mixed, three parts Tequila, one part Triple Sec and one part Lime, it was a huge success and through her guests it travelled quickly from Texas to Hollywood, bearing the Spanish translation of her name.
