2 Alaskan Brewing Alaskan Brewing Company is located in Juneau, the capitol of Alaska, just in the Southern tip of Alaska that borders British Columbia. The Tongass National Forest sits hard against the 1,500 square-mile Juneau Ice field. Only 50 miles of road run along its shores, making Juneau only accessible by sea or air. With 1,500 square miles of ice and glaciers, the Juneau Ice field is larger than the state of Rhode Island. It is the source of water for all Alaskan Beers. And as every brewer knows, water is one of the most important ingredients in beer.
3 Juneau, Alaska
4 History Alaskan Beer was founded in1986 by 28- year-olds Marcy and Geoff Larson. Marcy and Geoff were drawn to the beauty and adventure of Alaska, but finding a livelihood that would allow them to stay was a challenge. A friend suggested to start a brewery. Geoff homebrewed a batch of the Gold Rush-era brew and they could see what made it so popular. That beer is now known as Alaskan Amber. Link to more information While researching brewing in Alaska, they unearthed shipping records from Douglas City Brewing Co. ( ) that listed ingredients for its popular beers and a newspaper article that described the way it was brewed.
5 Alaskan Amber Style: Alt The name of this beer style comes from the German word "alt" meaning "old". This refers to the aging that alts undergo since they ferment more slowly and at colder temperatures than most ales. Slow fermentation helps condition the flavors in Alaskan Amber, contributing to its overall balance and smoothness. Flavor profile: Richly malty and long on the palate, with just enough hop backing to make this beautiful amber colored "alt" style beer notably well balanced with a hint of caramel. Ingredients: Glacier-fed water and a generous blend of the finest quality Czech Saaz and Washington Yakima Valley hops and premium two-row pale and specialty malts.
6 Alaskan Amber Alcohol by volume: 5.3% Bitterness: 18 IBU Suggested serving temperature: F Brewed since 1986 Serve in: Pint Availability: Year-round Link to more information Awards: Alaskan Amber has won countless awards including "Best Beer in the Nation" in the 1988 Great American Beer Festival Consumer Poll. Suggested Food Pairings: King or silver salmon, grilled meats, particularly beef and pork and hearty Italian dishes. Also pairs nicely with delicate cheeses, artichokes and roasted red peppers and gourmet pizzas.
7 Alaskan White Style: Alaskan White Ale is based on a Belgian-style witbier Witbier ("white beer in Dutch) is named for the suspended wheat proteins creating a cloudy appearance in this unfiltered beer. History: Popular in the late 18 th Witbiers were traditionally flavored with coriander, citrus and a secret spice known only to the brewer. Flavor profile: Hazy golden yellow color with a sudsy white head. Lovely nose of malts graced with soft notes of coriander and orange peel. On the palate, the malt base lets the spices take center stage. Ingredients: Glacier-fed water and a generous blend of the finest quality European and Pacific Northwest hop varieties, wheat and two-row specialty malts.
8 Alaskan White Alcohol by volume: 5.3% Bitterness: 15 IBU Suggested serving temperature: F Brewed since 2009 Availability: Year-round Serve in: English pint glass, Tumbler or tall Weizen beer glass Link to more information Suggested Food Pairings: The crisp flavor of Alaskan White Ale pairs well with spicy foods and lighter fare including fresh salads and grilled shrimp or halibut.
9 Alaskan Icy Bay IPA Style: India Pale Ale History: India Pale Ale developed out of the idea in the1760s that it was absolutely necessary to add extra hops to beer intended to be drunk in hot climates. Back then, many of these beers were exported from England to India which contributed to the name India Pale Ale. Besides, a strong ale with high hop content traveled well during the long journey to India. Flavor profile: The Icy Bay IPA has a bold taste, brisk bitter bite and a citrus hop aroma to match the intensity of a remote ride on a wave breaking on a solitary Alaskan beach. Ingredients: Glacier-fed water and a blend of Summit, Bravo, Calypso, Apollo and Cascade hops and premium two-row pale and specialty malts
10 Alaskan Icy Bay Alcohol by volume: 6.2% Bitterness: 65 IBU Suggested serving temperature:39-45 F Brewed since 2014 Availability: Year-round Link to more information Suggested Food Pairings: The pronounced hop flavor makes this style of beer a refreshing and a delicious accompaniment to grilled meats and spicy dishes.
11 Kicker Session IPA Style: Session India Pale Ale Session IPA s have grown in popularity since 2010 due to their hoppy flavor profiles, but lower ABV. History: For years, loyal patrons in the Juneau tasting room said, we want all the flavor, but not necessarily all the strength. This hop-dominant flavor and aroma in Kicker are enhanced by a lower alcohol content. Flavor Profile: A light caramel or toffee malt background and light medium body Aroma delivers a bright hop aroma of citrus, such as grapefruit and tangerine, with a light malt backbone. Ingredients Blend of Amarillo Citra, Simcoe and Mosaic hops and premium two-row specialty malts, glacier-fed water.
12 Kicker Session IPA Alcohol by volume: 4.5% Bitterness: 45 IBU Suggested serving temperature: F Serve in: Flute Brewed since 2016 Availability: Year round Link to more Information Suggested Food Pairings: This basic beer goes with all foods that need a refreshing balance to savory or salty dishes. Pub fare, BBQ s and anything coming off a shoreline grill in Alaska.
13 Alaskan Freeride Style: American Pale Ale APA s triggered the craft beer movement in the United States, showcasing the floral, fruity, and citrusy aroma and flavors of Pacific Northwest hops in balance with a medium malt body. History: Freeride APA started as a springtime staple for Alaskan s backcountry skiing and snowboarding crew, then became a perfect beer to savor with summertime kayaking, biking, and just about every other outdoor activity. Flavor Profile: A lush, green, almost tropical hop aroma paired with the unique taste combination of three hop varieties, making it both full in flavor and crisply thirstquenching. Ingredients: Cascade, Citra, and Centennial hops, premium two-row and specialty crystal malts, and Juneau s glacier-fed water.
14 Alaskan Freeride Alcohol by volume: 5.3% Bitterness: 40 IBU Suggested serving temperature: F Serve in: Lager, Shaker, Tulip Brewed since 2009 Availability: Year-round Link to more information Awards: Numerous including a gold medal at the 2011 North American Beer Awards Suggested Food Pairings: Spiced foods such as Southern barbeque, curry-based Indian dishes, a spicy chicken quesadilla, or freshly battered Alaskan halibut and chips. This style is also the perfect complement to grilled meats, burgers, and pizza.
15 Alaskan Summer Style: Alaskan Summer is Lager based on a German style Kölsch beer. History: Kölsch is a beer brewed in Cologne, Germany. It is a clear, all-barley pale ale with a bright, straw-yellow hue similar to a standard German pale lager. Flavor Profile: The strawgold color and easy drinkability of Alaskan Summer Ale make this light and flavorful brew the perfect way to celebrate the summer. Ingredients: Glacier-fed water and a generous blend of the finest quality European and Pacific Northwest hop varieties, malted wheat and two-row specialty malts.
16 Alaskan Summer Alcohol by volume: 5.3% Bitterness: 18 IBU Suggested serving temperature: F Serve in: Flute Brewed since 2002 Availability: Summer Seasonal Link to more Information Suggested Food Pairings: Enjoy this Kölsch style beer with delicately flavored food like fresh, wild Alaska crab or halibut or try it as accompaniment to salads.
17 Alaskan Husky IPA Style: India Pale Ale Based on a small batch SMaSH Mosaic IPA recipe using a single malt and single hop to explore the specific desired characteristics of certain malts and hops. History: First released in 2012 as an experimental variety by Hop Breeding Company, Mosaic IPA is a daughter of Simcoe and Nugget varieties. The Mosaic hop gives the Husky IPA a more mellow flavor than other IPAs. Flavor Profile: This IPA has brilliant clarity with a medium golden color. It exhibits tropical and stone fruit flavors with aromas of tangerine and papaya. Ingredients: Alaskan Husky IPA is made from glacier-fed water and features Mosaic hops and premium Pilsen malt.
18 Alaskan Husky IPA Alcohol by volume: 7.0% Bitterness: 50 IBU Suggested serving temperature: F Brewed since 2016 Availability: Spring Seasonal Link to more Information Suggested Food Pairings: Especially recommended with spicy foods such as Thai. Husky IPA is inspired by the hardest working athletes of the North, the Alaskan Husky. Alaskan huskies compete in long distance races from 50 to 1,000 miles or in the case of the annual Iditarod Sled Dog Race, a distance of 1049 miles. None of the purebred northern breeds can match it for sheer speed. Like the breed, this beer is gone before you know it, so catch while you can!
19 Alaskan Winter Style: English Olde Ale Traditionally malty with the warming sensation of alcohol, Olde Ales are brewed in the fall as winter warmers. History: From the seafaring adventures of the 1700s to the homebrewers of today, adding spruce tips to beer has a rich history in Southeast Alaska. Flavor Profile: Balances the sweet heady aroma of spruce tips with the clean crisp finish of noble hops. Its malty richness is complemented by the warming sensation of alcohol. Ingredients: Glacier-fed water, Sitka spruce tips and blend of European and Pacific Northwest hop varieties and specialty malts.
20 Alaskan Winter Alcohol by volume: 6.4% Bitterness: 22 IBU Suggested serving temperature: F Brewed since 2002 Availability: Winter Seasonal Link to more Information Awards: 2010 Silver at North American Beer Awards for Herbed/Spiced Beer 2004 Bronze at World Beer Cup for Experimental Beer 2003 Silver at North American Beer Awards 2002 Bronze at North American Beer Award Suggested Food Pairings: This traditional English Old Ale goes well with any warm winter dish: beef stew, roast goose, turkey, lamb. Also a nice complement to holiday breads, pound cake, or apple pie
21 Alaskan Big Mountain Pale Ale Style: American Pale Ale (APA) History: American Pale Ales were first developed in the United States in the late 1970s and early eighties. They feature American hops that distinguish them from British or European pale ales, with a milder bite than India Pale Ales (IPA). Flavor profile: Pouring clear and light copper in color, Big Mountain Pale Ale has notes of Asian pear, pine, and lemon in the aroma, accompanied by toasted nut, biscuit and toffee malt. The crisp flavor is distinct from the aroma, with pleasantly strong herbal notes and hints of complex tropical fruit. Ingredients: Big Mountain is brewed with Juneau s glacierfed water, domestic malts, 3 additions of hops in the kettle, and dry hopped with Mosaic and Simcoe hops.
22 Alaskan Big Mountain Pale Ale Alcohol by volume: 5.7% Bitterness: 45 IBU Suggested serving temperature: F Brewed since 2015 Availability: Year-round, by popular demand Link for more information Suggested Food Pairings: Big Mountain Pale Ale complements roasted or grilled meats, cheddar or smoky cheese and apple pie. Also goes well with hot salsas or Indian curries because the elevated hop levels and alcohol content will accentuate the spicy ingredients. Dry hopping refers to the process of adding hops after fermentation to add hop flavor. Since the hops are not boiled none of the hop oils are extracted and won t contribute to the beer s bitterness. More about dry hopping
