2 INTRODUCTION Welcome to Belfast Love. You have just stepped into a proper pub. Here you ll find a genuine enthusiasm for the drink, both to fashion and imbibe. The menu you hold has been designed to allow for all tastes and preferences. We carry over 50 whiskies of most varieties and 40 draught taps to charm any palate be it bold or resolute, participation is strongly encouraged. The cocktail menu is broken down into three sections comprised of Ours from yours truly, Not Ours from friends and foes alike, and Classics from our great benefactors. Be it strong and spirit forward or long and refreshing, the bases are covered. There s much to discover in these pages, however, if you don t see the spirit or cocktail of your choice just ask. 2

10 BLENDED & SINGLE MALT SCOTCH WHISKY Blended Blended Scotch whisky amounts for approximately 90% of the whisky produced in the United Kingdom. Blended Scotch whiskies contain both malt whisky and grain whisky. They were initially created as an alternative to single malt whiskies, which some considered too harsh. Producers combine the various malts and grain whiskies to produce a consistent brand style. 11 The Highlands Located south of Speyside and north of the Lowlands lies The Highlands region. The region includes most of the rest of Scotland, with the exception of the Island of Islay and Campbeltown, and thus its malts vary greatly in character. Generalizations about the Highland region are less valid, as its whiskies will range from dry to sweet and at times have a touch of smoke and peat. 12 Islay Located in the Inner Hebrides, the small Island of Islay is often called Whisky Island given its concentration of nine operating distilleries in just 620 square kilometers. The island produces very distinct malts, generally heavily peated and smoky in taste. 13 Speyside Technically, Speyside lies inside the Highland region. It is home to approximately half of Scotland s malt whisky distilleries. This small area of land located to the north west of Aberdeen produces mellow, sweet, and particularly fruity malt whiskies. 15 The Lowlands The Lowlands region lies south of an imaginary line drawn from the Clyde estuary to the Tay estuary. It can claim only three working distilleries. Whiskies from the Lowlands tend to be soft and light in character. They often display very malty, grassy characteristics and subtle delicate aromas. 16 Island Single Malts A general term for single malt scotch whiskies produced on the islands around the perimeter of the Scottish mainland. The exception is Islay, which is considered a separate whisky-producing region. They are considered to be part of the Highland region; they are extremely varied and have few similarities.
