3 Amber and Dark Beers Usual characteristics are copper in colour for the ambers and toasty, dark and full bodied for the Dark beers. Mostly between 6-9%. Often sweeter than most and with a hint of spice or liquorice. Originally this was a seasonal beer brewed in spring to last through the summer and into autumn. It therefore had to be durable and refreshing but this was difficult before refrigeration, so extra hops were added for preservation.
