1 FLEMING S BAR The name for Fleming s Bar was inspired by former landowner Lt. General Gilbert Fleming. Fleming was the Lieutenant Governor of St. Kitts from and for a period of time the acting governor of the British Leeward Islands. He was one of three administrators tasked with the distribution of the former French lands after the Treaty of Utrecht and led the team that ensured the safe return of stolen buried Spanish treasure on which the novel Treasure Island, by Robert Louis Stevenson was based. -

7 Before there was rum there was sugar. Man has long evidenced a yearning for the sweet. Sugar from cane is so much a part of our lives now that we take it for granted. But it is very much a part of who we are in the Americas, and its presence explains why some of us are here at all. Rum is a major New World part of the story of sugar, a story that is strung across hemispheres and borders. The powdery white substance was once as rare and as controlled as others like cocaine is today. Its by-product, rum, lubricates every aspect of our history. Spanish (Cuba, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Panama) Known for lighter rums, English (Barbados, Bermuda, Jamaica) Known for darker, richer rums that have been aged at least a year. They often have a more pronounced molasses flavour. French (Haiti, Guadeloupe, Martinique) More of a specific style, being distilled in pot stills from fermented cane juice. Often aged in used cognac barrels (but also sometimes used oak barrels) for a period of multiple years.
