1 Simon Pure Newsletter Issue #1 February/March 2015 Happy Birthday to the beer can. The Simon Pure chapter recently held a get together at resurgence Brewing Company to commemorate the latest anniversary of the beer can. Each attendee were to bring a can or related item of their liking to the event. Below is a sampling of some of the items brought to the event. Dennis Wisz with a a Kreuger Flat. Very appropriate given Kreuger was the first company to come out of prohibition with beer in a can. It was a very bold idea idea back then. The Iroquois items in the left corner are cool primarily because of the ad featuring the 3 low pro cones including the scarce Half and Half cone that most people will never be able to put on their shelf.. To the right is Kirk Simpson holding an Old Bohemian flat., a memorable acquisition, and at the time, one of the coolest cans on the shelf. The Iroquois flat below is part of a brewery desk top pen set from 1958 to commerate for the American Can Company the first run of the Keglined trademarked cans at the Fairport, NY plant. Now that is a pretty cool piece of breweriana. Check out Resurgence Brewing if you get a chance. They have a wide variety of killer good craft beers.

3 Issue #1 Page 3 PRESIDENTS REPORT by Jeff Murbach Welcome to Spring, This year looks very promising with our National Canvention in Milwaukee and in conjunction with the International Convention at the same hotel. This should be one of the best Canventions in recent times. Our chapter will be hosting three shows this year, the spring and fall shows at the Eldredge Bicycle Club and the summer show and cookout at the Polish Falcons Club. All three shows were very well attended last year. The dates are on our website so please mark your calendars. Our upcoming spring show is Saturday, April 4 at the Bicycle Club in Tonawanda. Celebration of the beer can: On January 24, 1935, the Kruger Brewing Company of Newark, New Jersey, was the first brewing company to put beer in a can. 80 years later, the Simon Pure chapter of the BCCA celebrated the anniversary of the beer can at Resurgence Brewing Co. We had 21 members turn out for this special event. We enjoyed LaNova Pizza and the good beers Resurgence sells. The members were asked to bring a can or item that was memorable for them in their can collecting days. Some of the cans and breweriana that our members brought to the show are seen on the cover page of the newsletter. The key development for storing beverages in cans was the interior liner, typically plastic or sometimes a waxy substance. The process was developed by Keg lined. The first beer can needed a can opener, or church key, to open. Being that this was a new product, the can manufacturers placed opening instructions on the side of the can. Kirk Simpson brought in an Old Bohemian can from Cleveland. It has a long opener on the side panel of the can which dates the can between 1935 and 40. A short time later, the first cone top can was produced. This was a more convenient way to drink a beer as you did not need a church key to open it. All you needed was a handy bottle opener. Dave Mik brought in a picture with three different Iroquois cone tops. The half and half can is very difficult as there are only two known. In 1963, the first tab top was invented by Ermal Fraze and the first zip top was produced by Iron City. Jeff Murbach brought that can in. In 2004, Anheuser-Busch came out with an aluminum bottle which was preferred in sports stadiums and concert facilities. Bob Terray brought in a mirror from 1985 which celebrated the 50th anniversary of the beer can. You can see this on page 2. Other memorable cans from our members were, From Newell an Iroquois Beer can, mounted on a pen set. This looks like it was given our as a gift from the can manufacturer. Larry Lemelin brought in a special commemorative can dedicated to recently departed Metro from Canada. He found this limited released can at a garage sale in Niagara Falls. It is shown to the right. Dennis Wisz brought in his Krueger flat top. This was his first can he got at the Blue Gray show years ago. Greg Oswald brought in a Phoenix flat that he got from his father s collection. Mike Sandretto brought in a Goeble flat. Thanks to all of you who helped make this a memorable event

Are you ready to do some trading or selling of all the breweriana that has been accumulating over the winter? Hey everybody, now that winter may finally be over its time for the Simon Pure Chapter to have its Spring Thaw show. This year its going to be on April 4th from 9am til Noon at the Eldredge Bicycle Club, 17 Broad St. in the City of Tonawanda Tables are $10.00 and walk ins are free.
