3 the octagon champagne IN THE OCTAGON DINING ROOM Situated on the first floor of House 21 taking it name from the shape of its floor plan, the re-furbished Octagon Dining Room is magical jewel-box of a room, where the haute-luxe aesthetic provides a perfect contemporary foil for the stuning 1820s ceiling. Like the decor, the menu offers an elegant fusion of flavours, drawing its influences from across the Asia. Diners can enjoy a selection of light ramen, soups and salads in Japanese style, or choose a delicious dish from the main menu which features more elaborate Far Eastern treats such as Baked Black Cod with miso- mirin marinade. Charles, 2nd Earl Grey, occupied Home House from Legend has it that the Earl was the recipient of the now famous blend from a grateful Chinese Mandarin, whose son was rescued from drowning by one of Lord Grey s retinue. The tea was specially blended for Lord Grey, to suit the water at Howick Hall, the family seat in Northumberland, using bergamot in particular to offset the preponderance of lime in the local water. His wife Lady Grey used it to entertain as a political hostess in Portman Square and it proved so popular that she was asked if it might be sold to others. Today you can experience this very British tradition in the House s own unique and elegant style. Enjoy all the traditional accompaniments from cucumber, egg and cress finger sandwiches, smoked chicken and spring onion mayonnaise, to scones with jam and clotted cream, accompanied by pastries and cakes. Wash it all down with the refined Earl Grey tea or the more robust Assam, or even a glass of fizz.
