11 ISO/CEN standards for Campylobacter ISO/TS There e is a need for the quantitative tat assessment e of Campylobacter in monitoring the effect of control measures and in risk assessment studies. Besides direct plating according to ISO/TS , semi- quantitative detection may be applied to give an estimate of the level of Campylobacter contamination. CRLCampy.2007.ISO 11

12 ISO/CEN standards for Campylobacter ISO/TS Draft ISO/TS is based on NMKL method No. 119 (3.Ed.,2007): Thermotolerant Campylobacter. Detection, semi-quantitative and quantitative determination in foods and drinking water. This NMKL method is validated in a collaborative study (2005) Rosenquist, H. et al. (2007), Int. J. Food Microbiol. 118, The method showed satisfactory results for fresh chicken, but not for milk due to a relatively low sensitivity and selectivity CRLCampy.2007.ISO 12

13 ISO/CEN standards for Campylobacter ISO/TS ISO/TC34/SC9 Prague, 2006 Resolution 282: SC9 members agreed to base part 3 of ISO on the semiquantitative NMKL method 119, excluding milk from the scope, and include the results from their collaborative studies in an annex as performance characteristics. Publication is expected in 2008 CRLCampy.2007.ISO 13

14 ISO/CEN standards for Campylobacter ISO/TS Principle: The test portion and decimal dilutions thereof are inoculated or diluted in Bolton broth and homogenized Incubation: 4-6h 37ºC, 40-48h 41,5ºC, microaerobic Plating on mccd agar, further as in ISO This method is based on qualitative detection in selected dilutions; the result is therefore given in intervals. 17 CEN mandate M/381 Standardized validated methods are of major importance to ensure uniform application and control of Community legislation in the EU. All reference methods included in EU legislation should be standardized and validated. Therefore a mandate for standardization has been addressed to CEN in the field of methods of analysis of foodstuffs ff concerning food hygiene. CRLCampy.2007.ISO 17
