4 14A001R0 Foreword This Malaysian Standard was developed by the Technical Committee on Fresh Fruits under the authority of the Industry Standards Committee on Agriculture. In the development of this Malaysian Standard, reference was made to the survey data provided by the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority relating to the size and quality classifications as well as commercial quality control of fresh wax apple. 5 14A001R0 Fresh wax apple (Syzygium samarangense) - Specification 1 Scope This Malaysian Standard specifies minimum requirements, classification, packaging, labelling and sampling for the commercial varieties of wax apple or rose apple (Syzygium samarangense (Blume) Merr. et L. M. Perry, (synonym: Eugenia javanica L., Eugenia samarangense (Blume) O. Berg) in the family of Myrtaceae) locally known as jambu air, hereinafter referred to as the fruit(s), supplied whole and fresh to the consumers. 2 Normative references The following normative references are indispensable for the application of this standard. For dated references, only the edition cited applies. For undated references, the latest edition of the normative reference (including any amendments) applies. MS 78, Method of sampling for fresh fruits (First revision) MS 2302, Packaging, storage and transportation for fresh tropical fruits - Guidelines Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Color Chart 3 Terms and definitions For the purpose of this standard the following terms and definitions apply. 3.1 clean The fruit shall be spotless and free from stains, dirt, spray residues and other foreign materials. 3.2 damage Any defect caused by mechanical and chilling injuries, insect and diseases infestation or other defects which materially affects the appearance and eating quality of the fruit(s). See Annex C. 3.3 defects Abnormalities which affect the overall appearance and quality of the fruit(s). See Annex C. 3.4 discolourations The condition of the fruit(s) skin that affects the colour of the fruit but will not affect the eating quality. See Annex C. STANDARDS MALAYSIA All rights reserved 1

6 3.5 keeping quality Preservation of quality throughout the supply chain. 3.6 over-ripe Index 4 where the skin of the whole fruit(s) is dark red. The pulp is less crunchy, juicier and sweeter compared to the fruit(s) of index 3. See Annex B. 3.7 ripe Index 3 where the skin of the whole fruit(s) is bright red. The pulp is crunchy, juicy and sweet. See Annex B. 3.8 similar varietal characteristics The fruit in any lot is of the same general shape, appearance and skin color. 3.9 well-trimmed The pistil is cut off smoothly to the level of floral end. The stamens are completely removed. The stalk is cut off smoothly to not more than 10 mm in length. See Annex A well-formed The fruit has the characteristic shape of the variety. 4 Minimum requirements 4.1 The fruit(s) shall be: a) whole, firm, fresh, clean and ripe but not over-ripe; b) practically free from damages caused by mechanical and chilling injuries, pests and diseases; c) free of abnormal external moisture excluding condensation following withdrawal from cold storage; d) fairly well-formed; e) free from foreign odour and/or taste; and f) sweetness as reflected by total soluble solids is not less than 8 Brix. 2 STANDARDS MALAYSIA All rights reserved

7 14A001R0 4.2 The development and condition of the fruit(s) shall be such as to enable them to: a) withstand transport and handling; and b) arrive in satisfactory condition at the place of destination. 5 Classification 5.1 General The fruit(s) is classified according to their sizes and grades. 5.2 Size The size codes for the fruit(s) are given in Table 1. Size code for fresh wax apple Weight per fruit (g) > The size tolerance for each size code is 10 % by number or weight of the fruit(s) specified in Table Grading The fruit(s) shall be classified into Grade Premium, Grade 1 and Grade 2 as in Table 2. When the fruit(s) are presented in packages, the difference between the smallest and the biggest unit in the same package shall not exceed the size tolerance specified in STANDARDS MALAYSIA All rights reserved

9 14A001R The fruit(s) shall be packed in each container as specified in MS Labelling Each individual package shall be marked legibly and indelibly or label shall be attached to the package, with the following information: a) common name of produce; b) grade; c) size code; d) weight of package; e) name and address of grower/supplier/exporter, and/or importer; and f) country of origin. 7 Sampling Sampling shall be carried out as specified in MS Compliance with the specification Upon testing, when each sample is found to conform to the requirements specified in this standard, the lot, batch or consignment, from which the sample has been drawn shall be deemed to comply with this standard. 9 Legal requirements The produce shall comply with the requirements of the legislation currently enforced in Malaysia.
