3 Raspberry Cane Burning Trial The objective is to determine how floricane vigor may influence the effects of cane burning treatments and potentially affect stand longevity The trial was established at Lynden (Randy Honcoop, cooperator) in 2017 Two ends of the same Meeker field (planted 2010) were marked Low Vigor section High Vigor section Both received identical cane burning treatments

17 Cane Conclusions 2017 was a good year for primocane production 2018 counts still to come this winter Cane burning programs in 2017 did not greatly impact high vigor canes (100 or more floricanes/25 ft of row) for 2018 Cane counts increased about the same amount in all programs The lowest increase was observed after late Aim to sides only

18 Cane Conclusions Cane burning programs in 2017 affected low vigor canes (fewer than 100 floricanes/25 ft of row) fairly significantly Cane counts increased most with no cane burning Cane counts stayed about the same with early Aim or Goal with no late treatment to the sides of the bed Cane counts showed the least increase in late Aim to sides only, early Goal with no late Aim, with standard Goal to with or without late Aim, or with late Goal to sides only

19 Berry Conclusions 2018 was a better year for yield and fruit size than 2017 Cane burning programs did not significantly increase yield or fruit size either year Trend was for greater yield with cane burning than without Low vigor raspberries tended to produce less fruit when treated with late Aim to sides only High vigor raspberries tended to produce less fruit when treated with late Goal to sides only, with standard Goal and no late Aim, or early Goal and late Aim

20 Baby Raspberry Trial Raspberry plugs were transplanted at NWREC Cascade Harvest, Meeker, Squamish, and Wakefield in 2016 Meeker, Squamish, and Wakefield in 2017 and 2018 Herbicides applied PRE or POST transplant

21 Baby Raspberry Trial In 2016, all tested herbicides were POSTR: Zeus, Chateau, Fierce, Devrinol, Prowl H2O, Surflan, Trellis, Matrix, Sandea, or Simazine In 2017 and 2018, all treatments were the same applied POSTR, except: Chateau and Fierce applied PRETR, due to excessive leaf injury in 2016 Devrinol replaced with Alion (POSTR) All plots handweeded in July

24 Baby Raspberry Conclusions Alion, Chateau, Fierce, Matrix, Prowl H2O, Sandea, and Zeus are not currently registered for newly planted raspberry, but hold good potential for registration Of the registered treatments, the best weed control was given by Surflan and Trellis Moderate weed control resulted from Devrinol and Simazine

25 Baby Raspberry Conclusions Of the registered treatments, the longest primocanes at the end of the first growing season were with Surflan, followed by Devrinol, simazine, and Trellis, all comparable to nontreated raspberry plugs Nonregistered treatments: The longest primocanes were with Chateau (PRETR) and Fierce (PRETR), all longer than nontreated raspberry plugs Alion, Prowl H2O, and Zeus were next best, similar in length as nontreated raspberry plugs
