Math Ideas Pumpkins are a natural for math. They come in various sizes and contain many seeds. Compare pumpkins by weight and circumference. Have 3 different size pumpkins available for this activity. Have children pick up three pumpkins, one at a time, and predict the weights: heaviest, middle, and lightest. Invite them to record their pumpkin weight predictions. Then weigh the pumpkins. Do the predictions match the weights? Encourage students to create a chart to organize their information. Measure the circumference of the same 3 pumpkins. Does the heaviest pumpkin have the largest circumference? Children can weigh and measure pumpkins at home, record the results and contribute to a group chart of pumpkin weights and measurements. Count the number of ribs on each pumpkin. Do the larger pumpkins have more ribs?
Predict which pumpkin (the largest? The smallest?) will have more seeds. Hollow out those two pumpkins and count the seeds of each. Predict how many seeds the middle-sized pumpkin will have. Children can find out how close their predictions are. Challenge the children to find a way to divide the pumpkin seeds so each child has the same number. Sequencing - After reading the story Pumpkin Pumpkin by Jeanne Titherington, make a chart to show how the pumpkin grew. Ask the children what happens first, next, and so on. Draw a picture to represent each event in the story. Start with a seed, then a small sprout, then a vine and blossoms and continue your chart until the pumpkin is picked and carved into a jack-o-lantern.
Science Ideas Pumpkin Seeds Get a pumpkin and discuss with the children, what will you find when you cut it open. To make this a literacy activity, have the children write their name down on a piece of paper and write their results. (You can help younger children write their answers). As you scoop out the contents of the pumpkin, talk to the children what they find. What can you use the seeds for? What can you used pumpkin pulp for? Seeds can be roasted for eating, re-planting for more pumpkins. Pumpkin pulp can be used for making pumpkin pie and muffins.
How to Roast Pumpkin Seeds Rinse pumpkin seeds under cold water and pick out the pulp and strings. (This is easiest just after you've removed the seeds from the pumpkin, before the pulp has dried.) Place the pumpkin seeds in a single layer on an oiled baking sheet, stirring to coat. If you prefer, omit the oil and coat with non-stick cooking spray. Sprinkle with salt and bake at 325 degrees F until toasted, about 25 minutes, checking and stirring after 10 minutes. Let cool and store in an air-tight container.
Seed Ideas Take seeds from a pumpkin and soak them over night. The next day, cut them open so that the children can see the tiny plant inside the seed. Talk to them about the seeds that are planted, this little plant inside the seed will continue the life cycle of a pumpkin. Seed, sprout, vine, flower, pumpkin. Plant seeds inside a ziplock bag filled with a small amount of soil and water. Zip the bags shut. Record their growth. Have students estimate the number of seeds in the pumpkin. Write down their guesses. Make a rough count by dividing the seeds into piles of 25.
Pumpkin Work Sheet Look at the pumpkin. Answer each question Pumpkin 1 Pumpkin 2 Pumpkin Color Size: How tall? Size: How heavy? Size: How big around? How many lines? What shape is the pumpkin? Guess the number of seeds Estimated number of seeds Learn Curriculum Graphic used: countryclipart.com
