As always, I am optimistic about the company s future. Our tea business is heating up, our new iced coffee products are on fire and our large customers are starting to bounce back after being hit by the brutal winter storms. We are all managing costs much better and productivity continues to improve at our manufacturing facilities. Our success over the past year is the result of a team effort, which all of us played an important part in. Thank you for all your hard work. Summer: Reflect, assess and get ready for a better year! Summer is one of the most important times of the year because it is fiscal year end. It is a time for us all to celebrate our successes, identify areas where we can improve and set our goals for the next year. Performance reviews are an important part of the process and an area we need to improve on as a company. The Performance Review Process: Done well, the performance review is a two way exchange with the manager getting good feedback on how he/she can improve, as well as the employee. These conversations should have occurred throughout the year and there should be few surprises during the formal review. The employee gets a score, and for most people that will be meets expectations though it may be higher or lower depending on the individual. Equally important is the process of setting goals for the next year. All of our goals should be specific, measurable, achievable, and consistent with the company goals. My goals are listed in the chart on the next page and are reviewed at each Town Hall meeting throughout the year. There is always an element of stress to this process, but I think it is critical to improving our collective results. uidelines for Reviews: Every employee of the company should expect the following from their manager. Please reach out to your HR contact or department head if you have questions or issues. 30 Minute or Longer Review: This will include a quality dialogue and two way discussion, not just a score. Clear oals: You should leave the review with a clear understanding of your goals for the upcoming year and what is expected of you from your manager. Continue the Conversation: Open conversation and feedback should occur throughout the year, not just during the review process. If circumstances change in your department, as sometimes happens in our competitive business, pull the goal sheet out, get with your boss, and mutually readjust your performance goals. If we all get aligned and make sure we have our best feet forward to compete in the market, I am convinced it will be another strong year for Farmer Brothers. All the best, Mike JULY 2014 vol. 3 Issue 1

All Torrance, CA long haul drivers are required to be physically present and drivers located in our out of state distribution centers are required to attend via conference call. This meeting provides a unique opportunity for the drivers to meet with the Senior level executive management team. Mike Keown provides the drivers a state of the company announcement and Mark Nelson provides a financial overview. The drivers are then given the opportunity to have a Q&A session with Mike, Mark and the Senior Vice Presidents of Operations, Route Sales and National Sales Accounts. Driver Run Bids are a unique combination of routes, delivery times of day, and days of the week. Because of this uniqueness, drivers select their runs in a process known as a Bid and a Seat. A seat is a position on a run bid which could be a Solo driver, Team of drivers or an Extra Board driver. Drivers bid available Run Bids and Seats in seniority order until all seats have been bid. Top two to bid are Tom Owens, with 31 years of service, and Dan Hartnett, with 29 years at Farmer Brothers! New bids are then posted, and go into effect two weeks after the bid meeting. We often take the opportunity for Human Resources and Risk Management to conduct Employee Training and Safety Meetings while all drivers are in attendance. There are plans next year to announce a new Driver of the Year award, and after the run bid meeting, to conduct a Driver Rodeo competition. 2

3 Branch spotlight Little Rock Branch Meet the Team of the Mighty Little Rock Branch. Founded in 1821, Little Rock is the capital, and largest city in the State of Arkansas. Located near the geographic center of Arkansas, Little Rock derives its name from a small rock formation on the south bank of the Arkansas River called la Petite Roche (French: the little rock ). The little rock was used by early river traffic as a landmark and became a wellknown river crossing. Travelers referred to the area as the Little Rock, and the landmark name stuck. In 1992, Little Rock moved to center stage when former governor Bill Clinton became the first Arkansan to be elected President of United States. In 2004, the William J. Clinton Presidential Library was built. In 1982, Farmer Brothers established a branch in Little Rock out of necessity to service some of the well-known Sambo s restaurants, which at the time was a major account for Farmer Brothers. In 1984 the branch was moved and relocated to its current location. Located in central Arkansas, the branch provides service to customers in a 175 mile radius from the Little Rock epicenter. The branch is led by DSM Dickey Harper supporting 4 routes that sell and services over 700 accounts; with a diversity of business types such as; OCS, Restaurants, Healthcare, C - Stores, and Retail including Wal-Mart. From left to right: Ryan Atwood, Jason Moore, Beau Williams, Steve Bailey, DSM Dickey Harper and RST Randy Reno. Missing from photo is Fred Steltz (Equipment Service Tech). The routes are supported by an experienced Route Sales Trainee and an Equipment Service Technician. The Little Rock team has more than 79 years of combined expertise in sales and service. Although small in size, the branch is relentless and proud to have won 3 of the prestigious Branch of the Year awards in its history. Little Rock believes in its customers first, and proudly hails the motto - Pride in our Past, Faith in our Future, something they strongly believe in. Next time you are by this way, please stop in and visit. You are always welcome. Little Rock is proud to showcase one of its great customers, who has partnered with Farmer Brothers since they opened in David and Patti Stobaugh opened their first restaurant 34 years ago in July of The name of the restaurant is Stoby s and the original restaurant is located on the corner of Robinson and Donaghey in Conway, Arkansas. Customer FEATURE Stoby s Restaurant David Stobaugh s college nickname was Stoby, which became the name for the restaurant. Stoby s original menu only had one item, the now famous Stoby sandwich which to this day is still the number one menu item in the restaurant. The second most popular menu item is their remarkable Tuna Salad in Pita bread. After much success, a second restaurant opened in Russellville in Then in 2010, Patti Stobaugh opened Patticakes Bakery next door, where Patti makes all the desserts for the restaurant. The Stobaugh s believe in giving back to the community, and at least three times a month, the restaurant (which is closed on Sundays) is turned over to local non-profit organizations, who sell tickets for a pancake breakfast. These proceeds all go to local charities. Mr. Stobaugh said, I am very appreciative of our relationship with Farmer Bros. They have both outstanding products and unmatched service, and have been an important and valued partner in our success. In fact, in 2010, Esquire magazine listed us among the top 59 breakfast in America and it s certain we would have never received that recognition if we didn t have a superb cup of coffee! RSR Beau Williams services both Stoby s locations and Patticakes, with a great working relationship with David and Patti Stobaugh. Beau said this is one of those accounts you really enjoy servicing because of the great employees there and the family atmosphere they all seem to share. Stoby s has such a great variety of dishes to choose from on their menu such as their Farmer Brothers pancakes, to the signature Fruit Punch drink they serve and are well known for. It s a secret recipe, but starts with our fruit punch mix. Along with these items, Farmer Brothers also supplies them with spices, Pan uard, extracts and Lemon beverage mix. If you are ever in the Conway, Arkansas area, please stop by and say hello, and according to the Stobaughs, try some of the BEST Cheese Dip available. 3

5 Big Wins International Corporate Chefs Association (ICCA) In late June, Bruce Mullins VP of Coffee Culture at Farmer Brothers traveled to San Diego at the invitation of the International Corporate Chefs Association (ICCA) to lead a Coffee: Tree to Cup training session before an audience of top chefs from America s 100 leading foodservice operations. Attendees, including the culinary leaders from noteworthy restaurant chains such as Frontera, Red Robin, On The Border, IHOP, and The Cheesecake Factory, listened carefully as Bruce described all of the steps necessary to produce a cup of great coffee. SVP of National Sales Scott Siers sits on the board of directors of the ICCA, and was responsible for connecting Mullins with the event organizers. From feedback received during and after the event, it seems that events like the ICCA Summit continue to elevate Farmer Brothers reputation within the foodservice industry. You never know where your next Big Customer is going to come from, but there s a pretty good chance that they might have been sitting in that audience, Mullins recently stated. Bruce s hour-long training concluded with a tasting of four different singleorigin specialty coffees roasted in our Portland facility. To help with the brewing and serving of the coffee, Mullins relied on the expert help of DRS Andrew Williams who drove two-hours each way to the event, along with Sr. DSM Mark Bailey and DSA Darrell Sherman from our branch in San Diego - all of whom volunteered to work on their day off the Sunday the event was held. I can t tell you how much I appreciated our Farmer Brothers team at this event, Mullins said. Our San Diego branch made sure that the huge urn brewer at the hotel was PM d and had a new filter installed a few days before we arrived. During the event, I was able to be up on the stage concentrating on my presentation, and not having to worry about the brewing of these important coffees because our team of experts had it perfectly covered. Mullins concluded, To be invited to speak before such an amazing group of foodservice leaders was really an What Does Your Coffee Reveal about You? honor for me and for Farmer Brothers. Everyone in the room was a nationally-recognized leader in the food and culinary business, and a lot of them knew a lot about coffee. But from novice to expert, it was fun to share some of our coffee passion and knowledge with them, and help them realize that Farmer Brothers should be on their short list of national coffee, tea, and culinary suppliers. By Emily Waters The type of coffee you order may reveal more about your personality than you think. Clinical psychologist Dr. Ramani Durvasula recently conducted an observational study of 1,000 coffee drinkers. The survey assessed numerous common personality styles and psychological traits including introversion and extraversion; patience; perfectionism; warmth; vigilance; sensitivity; and social boldness, among others. What did the survey reveal about different coffee drinkers? 7 What is Total Wellness? Physical Social Emotional Total Wellness is more than merely physical health, exercise or nutrition. It s the full integration of physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. Total Wellness includes social, emotional, spiritual, environmental, occupational, intellectual and physical wellness. Each of these 7 elements act and interact in a way that contributes to our quality of life. Intellectual Occupational Environmental Spiritual Social Wellness: is the ability to relate to and connect with other people in our world. Our ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with family, friends and co-workers contributes to our Social Wellness. Emotional Wellness: is the ability to understand ourselves and cope with the challenges life can bring. The ability to acknowledge and share feelings of anger, fear, sadness or stress; hope, love, joy and happiness in a productive manner contributes to our Emotional Wellness. Spiritual Wellness: is the ability to establish peace and harmony in our lives. The ability to develop congruency between values and actions and to realize a common purpose that binds creation together contributes to our Spiritual Wellness. Environmental Wellness: Is the ability to recognize our own responsibility for the quality of the air, the water and the land that surrounds us. The ability to make a positive impact on the quality of our environment whether it is our homes, our communities or our planet contributes to our Environmental Wellness. Occupational Wellness: is the ability to get personal fulfillment from our jobs or our chosen career fields while still maintaining balance in our lives. Our desire to contribute in our careers to make a positive impact on the organizations we work in and to society as a whole leads to Occupational Wellness. Intellectual Wellness: is the ability to open our minds to new ideas and experiences that can be applied to personal decisions, group interaction and community betterment. The desire to learn new concepts, improve skills and seek challenges in pursuit of lifelong learning contributes to our Intellectual Wellness. Physical Wellness: is the ability to maintain a healthy quality of life that allows us to get through our daily activities without undue fatigue or physical stress. The ability to recognize that our behaviors have a significant impact on our wellness and adopting healthful habits (routine checkups, balanced diet, exercise, etc.) while avoiding destructive habits (tobacco, drugs, alcohol, etc.) will lead to optimal Physical Wellness. 7

8 1 Supply Chain/Manufacturing Update This group has seen several changes recently and are working together more so than any other time in the past. We are one team with one direction that will get stronger every day. We have great leaders across all areas focused on building a world class supply chain efficient equipment utilization, inventory control, quality, effective distribution and logistics to name a few. By: Jose Ramirez Here are three of the most current projects: 2 3 3) The second continuous roaster in Houston was upgraded with a touch screen panel; both roasters are now complete. In Torrance, the first continuous roaster has been upgraded (see picture) with the second in progress, to be done by end of August. Again, this gives us a lot of flexibility to produce batch-like roast profiles in these high volume roasters. Compliments to the R&D team to make sure we meet all the required specs to successfully match customer products. 1 ) A new Bulk 20 Pound machine was installed in Houston due to the amazing growth witnessed over the past year in this product line. To date, we have produced the same amount that was produced all of last year! reat work has been done between the Portland and Houston operation teams to support our customer s growth. In Memoriam Bob Williams, DSM 2) Our plan to begin replacing older packaging equipment has started, by replacing two 30 year old fractional lines in Houston with high speed Fresco pouch machines, capable of running 240 bags per minute. They will be in full production by end of July. PORTLAND ROCKS! Yes, that s the Houston management staff holding that sign (with forced smiles). The Portland and Houston facilities had a friendly wager during the World Cup Finals, that whoever chose the losing team would admit the other facility rocks. This was also after the Portland Blazers beat the Houston Rockets in the NBA Playoffs! Who s next? There are 15 other projects (new items, LTOs, packaging changes, new customers) that are currently in progress. It takes much effort with staff from various departments for all these projects to be successful, so thank you to everyone involved! Route trucks lined up in Bob s honor A large portion of our life is often spent accumulating stuff, which in some ways, we consider these our treasures. However, when we lose a loved one, a friend, a father, or mother, a daughter, or a son, it is then we realize the most precious possession we have, is our life and the lives of those we love. This last month, we learned just how quickly one of these treasures could be lost. After many years of dedicated service to a company he loved and supported, Bob Williams, of Ft. Collins, CO. passed away after a courageous battle with cancer. His 29 years with Farmer Brothers included 5 salesmen of the year awards, and he participated in 6 Branch of the year awards. His attention to people and their needs won him the respect and admiration of all who knew him. In many ways he was an inspiration and a mentor to us all. His determination was evident even as he bravely fought the cancer. iving up was not an option he would consider. Bob loved to travel, enjoyed reading and writing, loved Chicago Cubs and baseball, music, and the Denver Broncos. He served in the air force from , and married his high school sweetheart, Carolyn, in He passed away peacefully at his home on May 29th, after his courageous 2-year battle. A very wise man once said better to go to the house of mourning, for it is the end of every man, and the living should take it to heart. We each are faced with making decisions that require our attention and forethought. What is really important? Do I have as much time as I think I do? Where are my treasures? People like Bob Williams prove to be treasures that make our lives rich. He will be greatly missed! 8
