Wit a poplation of 57.8 million, at least 63 million people live beneat te national povet line, and a lage sae of te poplation lives jst above. Still, Banglades as managed to edce povet significall ove te last eas, it a dop fom 49 pecent in 000 to 40 pecent in 005 (Te Wold Bank, 008). Measing gende elated povet is difficlt, bt tee ae eseac tat sggest te aond 70 % of te old s poo ae omen (UNDP, 996). Access to financial sevices is believed to incease te possibilit to smoot and opefll incease income. In tis tesis I ill focs on micocedit, moe specificall te Gameen tpe micocedit. In te folloing I ill addess tese eplanations, and descibe o MFIs ave design mecanisms to ok aond tem. 3. Te Callenges An MFI faces some significant difficlties en opening bsiness in an nknon teito. Tese poblems ae based on te lack of collateal te booe can pt p; ig tansaction costs; infomation asmmeties beteen te pincipal (te MFI) and te agent (te booe); and fomal and moal difficlties en it comes to enfocing contacts. Accepting tat tee is a cedit maket faile in al aeas of developing conties, decisions on if and o to intevene mst be addessed. Te al cedit maket in developing conties is often caacteized b local monelendes opeating nde a limited access to fnds. Ts, intodcing financial instittions it bette access to fnds migt impove oteac b allocating cedit to a lage gop of people. Stiglitz (990) and otes point ot tat even tog local monelendes sometimes ae seen as eploitative de to ig inteest ates, tese

Advese Selection Te lack of local infomation ma lead to te poblem it advese selection. A bank o an MFI itot local infomation is not able to select te igt isk pofile in tei potfolios. Tis often contasts it te infomation local monelendes ave, o can sepaate booes accoding to iskiness, and cage inteest ates accoding to te booe s isk pofile (Stiglitz, 990). Becase of te infomation asmmeties, an MFI cold be pt in a position ee it as to cage eceedingl ig inteest ates and b tis dive te good booes ot of te maket (Amendaiz de Agion and Modc 005).
