3 INTRODUCTION These Trade Statistics tables prepared for PAA members have been built up from a number of sources including: Import tonnages from the official trade statistics (Intrastat plus Extrastat); completed monthly tables from paper agents to fill out and correct the official import figures; statistics cross-checked against other national and international sources. These sources build up to apparent consumption or total new supplies, as distinct from actual usage in the market place once stock changes have been allowed for. The value of this approach is two-fold. Firstly, agents can compare these figures with their own sales as a running measure of their performance. Secondly, agents can compare these figures with their perception of actual usage levels and so can assess the extent of stock changes, up or down, which sooner or later will impact on buying levels and perhaps on the demand/ supply balance. With your help and cooperation we aim to build up the detail and accuracy of these tables and we hope that you will continue to find them of value. Equally, we must stress the need for full returns from as many agents as possible if we are to be able to continue providing you with this market information. Suppliers Assessments of Stocks Held With the introduction of the new monthly statistics forms, which include a column for unsold UK stocks, a decision has been taken to discontinue the on-going stock assessment report. Stock details should now be entered on the new forms. As a result, the relevant page within this report has been omitted until such time that reliable stock information can be reported. Unfortunately, at present only a small number of companies are providing the necessary information. A much broader coverage of each sector is required before worthwhile data can be analysed and reported on. This can best be achieved by all companies returning their completed forms. 3
