Today s Webinar: Don t let Halloween scare you! Kid s guide to gluten-free Halloween o Teal Pumpkin Project Adult guide to gluten-free Halloween
GF Halloween Treats CDF Halloween Candy List: o Now includes other allergens! a few 100% GF candies (not all-inclusive): o Tootsie Rolls o Smarties o Jelly Belly s 2015 Gluten-Free Halloween Treats List Hershey s Almond Joy and Mounds Bars All except Joy Pieces Candy Gluten-Free Mini Pretzels Snyder s of Hanover
Teal Pumpkin Project CDF and FARE (Food Allergy Research & Education) teamed up! raise awareness of food allergies and promote inclusion ensure ALL trick-or-treaters can enjoy Halloween! 1. Post the sign in your window 2. Paint your pumpkin teal and carve with CDF butterfly 3. Provide non-food and GF treats
Non-Food Treats: glow stick, bracelets, necklaces pencils, pens, crayons, markers bubbles halloween erasers and pencil toppers mini slinkies whistles, kazoos, noisemakers bouncy balls finger puppets spider rings vampire fangs playing cards bookmarks stickers stencils
Trick-or-Treating Tips for a fun gluten-free night (and avoiding a melt-down): Discuss the plan and set the rules ahead of time All candy will be sorted with mom and dad, and the glutencontaining candy will be given to food banks or can be traded with siblings Determine how much candy will be kept, and how much will be allowed to eat each day
Everything in Moderation Allow your child to fill up 1 bag with his/her favorites and give away the rest Minimize choices: Keep a small container on the counter for your child to choose one or two pieces for dessert, then refill it from the larger stash Always brush teeth after eating simple sugars to prevent dental carries!
Classroom & Kids Parties Bring GF treats to share Notify the party host ahead of time Make sure you have a 504 plan with your school
Face Paint & Costume Makeup Do you need to worry? Gluten cannot be absorbed through the skin BUT, especially for young children, makeup may end up on the hands and in the mouth Many people with celiac disease have additional sensitivities to topical products; test them out before Halloween to avoid a disaster
Make your own GF face paint 1. Mix body lotion or cold cream (check for GF ingredients) with cornstarch until it reaches a paint-like consistency (usually double the cornstarch to lotion). Add a few drops of food coloring 2. Start with a very lightcomplexioned face foundation and mix in GF eye-shadows
Bring-Your-Own Pumpkin Recipes Super easy pumpkin bread: o Mix 1 bag Pamela s Spice Cake Mix with 1-15oz can pumpkin puree. Bake at 350 F in loaf pan for min Explore recipes at celiac.org: Live Gluten Free: o o Graham Crackers and Pumpkin Dip Pumpkin Hand Pies
Pumpkin Carving Download the CDF logo online for tracing and carving celiac.org/halloween Use celiac blue to paint your pumpkin! Share your photo on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter #mycdfpumpkin
Roasting Pumpkin Seeds Roasted pumpkin seeds: choose gluten-free spices Spices are often ground in areas that process gluten-containing grains, and levels over 20 ppm have been found in several spice brands
Pumpkin Seed Seasonings Full recipes at celiac.org/ Ask the Dietitian Cinnamon and sugar Garam masala Paprika Rosemary and parmesan cheese Brown sugar, chipotle chile powder, cumin
Gluten-Free Cider & Beer Ciders are the trendy alcoholic beverage and the perfect flavor for the fall season. Most ciders are naturally gluten-free Beer labeled gluten-free, not gluten-removed Choose those that are labeled GF and/or list ingredients Choose bottled, not tap!
Pumpkin Spice Latte Many popular coffee shops are not making allergen information public; ask questions and do research Treat coffee shops as restaurants; if ingredients are gluten-free be weary of cross-contact and notify your barista of your dietary restriction. Ask them to wash equipment thoroughly Possible gluten-containing ingredient: malt flavor
Make Your Own PSL Mix ½ tsp pumpkin pie spice with 2 tsp honey, agave, or maple syrup (note: honey and agave are higher in fructose and may cause GI distress) Brew coffee. Mix 8 oz coffee with 1 tsp pumpkin-spicesweetener until dissolved. Shake 2/3 cup milk in a jar for 2 minutes to make frothy, then microwave for seconds and mix into coffee. Top with froth.
Thank You celiac.org/ask celiac.org/webinars Next webinar: Gluten Free Holidays November 18 th, 12 noon PST
