1 Dear Walk Kansas Tea Captain, Welcoe to the Walk Kansas progra and thank you for serving as captain of your tea! By accepting the Captain s role, you have agreed to lead your tea ebers through the 8-week challenge to ove ore, eat better and learn positive ways to deal with stress. As the tea captain, you will be responsible for counicating weekly with your tea ebers, provide otivation and support as they work toward personal goals, and report the progress of your tea each week. Your Captain s Guide includes inforation to help you get started and register your tea for a Walk Kansas journey to better health. Your tea needs to decide at registration which of the three challenges you are undertaking - #1 walking across Kansas (423 iles), #2 walking, winding diagonally across state, (approxiately 750 iles) or #3 around Kansas (1200 iles). See challenge inforation in the attached captain guide for a coplete explanation. Consuers are increasingly interested in where their food coes fro and ay be concerned about the health and safety iplications of various food production ethods. With any different ters such as organic, natural and GMO-free being used in food arketing, it is confusing for consuers to know how to spend their food dollars wisely. RSVP by March 22 th by calling the Extension Office at (620) or eailing lycoext@ksu.edu. Fit for Life Class will be at the Eporia Rec Center on April 11 th at 10 a.. and 7p.. 3 Guide for Captains March 19 May 13, 2017 Congratulations Captain! Thank you for stepping up to lead your Walk Kansas tea! Walk Kanas tea captains should: Be a leader and organizer. Think of March 19, the first day of Walk Kansas, as a referee blowing a whistle. As the captain, you need to ake sure your tea is ready to go! Think positive and be optiistic. Encourage your tea-ates by saying and believing we can do this. Stay connected. Work with your tea to select a group goal or challenge. Counicate with tea ebers regularly to see how things are going and ake sure they know how the tea is doing. Celebrate! This doesn t have to be elaborate and can be as siple as sending a essage each week to highlight success of the tea or a tea eber. Send a otivational text, e-card or postcard. Arrange a fun celebration for your tea such as bowling party, iniature golf, or other tea activity, a pot-luck dinner or lunch out. Make it healthy and fun! To get started, read through the welcoe page for Walk Kansas participants and the Tips for captains sheet. Gather your tea and select a challenge and find out if they would like to have group or tea activities. Follow-through and register your tea. Steps to Register Your Tea Get your tea ready by following these steps. (Return tea registration aterials and payent to the Extension Office by March 16.) 1) Distribute participant inforation, in this packet, to tea ebers. Each person (including yourself) should receive a registration for, participant welcoe, daily log, and physical activity guide. 3) Coplete the tea registration for (provide eail address for those who wish to receive the newsletter electronically and ailing address for those who prefer a postage paid letter.) Indicate size and color for those who order T-shirts. 3) Select a challenge. With your tea-ates, select a challenge to strive for and check the appropriate box on the tea registration for. Challenge #1 Across the state. Each tea eber gets 2 ½ hours of physical activity per week, enough to go 423 iles across the state. Challenge #2 Across and back. Each tea eber gets 5 hours of activity per week, enough to go across the state and back. Challenge #3 Around. Each tea eber logs 6 hours of activity per week, enough to go 1200 iles, the distance around the state. * Based on calculation of 15 inutes = one Walk Kansas ile.

4 4) Collect registration fors, progra fees, and payent for T-shirts (optional). Return these fors and payent (one check per tea) to the Extension office before (March 16). Registration is not coplete until all fors are collected and fees are paid. 5) Contact tea ebers each week to see how they are doing and reind the to report inutes and cups of fruits/vegetables consued to you on Sunday. 6) Report tea totals to the Extension office weekly (on Monday) or enter totals online at under Tea Progress if this is what your local progra prefers. Your first reporting date is March 27 th and the last reporting date is May 25 th. 7) Progress of your tea and all other teas across the state can be viewed on the website. 8) Evaluation fors will be distributed during week 7 of the progra. Encourage tea-ates to coplete the evaluation online or through a paper evaluation provided by the Extension office. 9) Read counication fro the Extension office about Walk Kansas activities, such as kick-off or celebration events, fun walks, and other activities offered in your counity. Encourage tea-ates to participate. Also, check the website for new inforation throughout the progra and use the instructional videos to enhance your fitness activities. Encourage tea ebers to do the sae! 10) Captains will receive weekly otivational essages along with a reinder to report tea totals. These essages will offer suggestions you can use in supporting your tea to reach the goal you have selected. What Activities Count as Walk Kansas? The physical activity guide provided is a good resource. To reinforce what counts, the activity ust be at least 10 consecutive inutes (not 3 inutes walking fro the parking lot, another 2 inutes walking up the stairs, etc.) Activities ust also be oderate and/or vigorous, and they can be strengthening activities. Drink ore Water challenge: Walk Kansas newsletters will ephasize the need to drink water through a weekly water tip. Decide if your tea would like to track how often they choose water over a sugary beverage and calculate $$ savings. For every beverage you replace with water, count $1.50 in savings.
