3 THE STORY In 1878, British entrepreneur and adventurer Sir Thomas Lipton purchased coffee plantations in Ceylon, and seeing a chance for innovation, converted them into tea plantations. Combined with his existing retail business in Britain, he became the first to integrate production, distribution, and retail of tea into one operation, bringing readily available high quality tea to the world.
