Japonica Len Hobbs Exist or Not? NOVICE Sarah Harvey 6 After reading question 1. of Richie s quiz in the June newsletter and seeing the cultivar Len Hobbs listed, has initiated this note: It is unfortunate that the camellia bearing Len s name may not exist now. Len during the 1970 s and 1980 s gave so much to camellias in particular the Victorian Branch as president, grower, breeder and exhibitor (jointly with wife Marjorie). After Len passed away the plants of c.jap. Len Hobbs were propagated by Ken Brown at his former nursery and residence at Mitcham, Victoria and registered in Approximately twelve years ago I was walking to Len s widow Marj (deceased on 10/2/12) and mentioned the Len Hobbs camellia. She said there were three original plants grown between herself and Ken Brown and that all of these had died. She believed then that there were no others. Marj has the c. sasanqua Marjorie Hobbs (1996) named after her. Affiliate of Camellias Australia Inc. NSW CAMELLIA RESEARCH SOCIETY INC. Is there anybody out there?? Yes, you! I am talking to YOU! Where have you been? Not at our monthly meeting, that s for sure! Now that I have your attention, recent attendance at our monthly meetings has been poor, to say the least. Even the presence of our National President, Jim Powell, providing an enthralling grafting technique demonstration at our June meeting, was only able to attract the hardiest of souls. It was appreciated by those who attended, though Jim needs to have a word to his joke writer! (I hope that isn t Jenny!) With our Annual Show almost upon us, these poor numbers are a concern. The Annual Show is a centrepiece of our calendar and your participation as an exhibitor, helper, or attendee (or all three!) is vital to the show s success. Any visitors to our annual show will agree it is a visual feast, as well as being informative and an opportunity to catch up with others who share our passion for growing Camellias. Please show your support and I will see you at our Annual Show (and our July Meeting). On a more positive note, we have had a good response to the setup and running of the Show. If you wish to assist, your help will be more than welcome. Please drop me a line or call my mobile. Apologies for the less than positive report this month, but our Society is only as strong as its members and it is up to all of us to contribute in a positive manner to keep our society strong. If you have any ideas that may encourage participation at our monthly meetings, or attract new members, please contact any of our committee members or myself. See you at the Show! Congratulations to our Patron - Her Excellency Professor The Honourable Dame Marie Bashir AD CVO In the 2014 Queen s Birthday Honours, Marie Bashir was made a Dame of the Order of Australia - For extraordinary and pre-eminent achievement and merit in service to the administration, public life, and people of New South Wales, to medicine, particularly as an advocate for improved mental health outcomes for the young, marginalised and disadvantaged, to international relations, through the promotion of collaborative health programs, and as a leader in tertiary education. 3

5 What is Integrated Pest Management? Integrated pest management (IPM) is a combination of practices and control methods to prevent problems from occurring rather than dealing with them after they have happened. IPM control methods include; biological control (using predators, parasites and microbes to suppress pests): cultural and physical control ( using traps, exposing pests to predation or destroying their food, shelter and breeding habitats); chemical control (applying the least toxic pesticide when the pest numbers are present beyond an established threshold); plant choice (choosing plant varieties that are resistant to pests and diseases); genetic control (controlling populations through GM pests); pheromone control, (using pheromones to monitor insect populations). IPM can be applied to any situation. The application of the following: A four-tiered approach to integrated pest management four tiered approach will ensure successful plant growth whilst maintaining an environment that is balanced and harmonious 1. Set action thresholds. This is the point at which pest populations will have a significant impact on the plant growth. Sighting a single pest does not always mean control is needed. You experience and observations will help establish this threshold 2. Monitor and identify pests Not all insects, weeds and other living organisms require control. Many organisms are harmless, and some are beneficial. Monitor for pests and identify them accurately so appropriate control decisions can be made. 3. Prevent pests from becoming a threat The growing of plants that resist pest attack or planting pest-free rootstock, along with other cultural measures can lessen the likelihood of pest attack. These control methods can be very effective and costefficient, and present little to no risk to people or the environment. 4. Control Once preventative methods are no longer effective or available, find the most effective control method that presents the least risk to the environment and human health. These may include the use of highly targeted chemicals or trapping or weeding. If these methods are proving ineffective, additional pest control methods such as targeted spraying of pesticides may be required, but remember the general spraying of non-specific pesticides is a last resort. Pesticides should be used only when they are absolutely justified. Carefully identify the pest being targeted and ensure all control options are fully considered. Try organic pesticides as a first choice. If you follow these simple steps you can not only grow healthier Camellias, but you will also have a healthier garden and environment, as well as saving valuable time and money on expensive chemical controls. A wealth of information is available on Integrated Pest Management if you wish for more detail. Cultural Notes Part 2 (cont d from last month s Notes) Information based on NSW EPA website 8 Next Monthly Meeting is on Monday 21st July 2014 at 7.45pm at the Baptist Church Hall, Park Avenue, Gordon Program Opening remarks from President Our Guest Speaker this month is Tony Curry who will talk about tropical camellia species of Vietnam; If you ve got blooms that did not come out for the Show bring them along to the Monthly Bloom Competition as its not too late to score points; and Richard Fischer will answer any camellia-related questions you may have; Donation Camellia Plant selected by Bill Parker. Tickets are still only $1 each or 3 for $2. Thanks to Bill of Camellias-R-Us (see advertisement on back page) for donating the plant; and Notes on our June Meeting Attendance at the meeting was disappointingly low, especially as our National President, Jim Powell, and Jenny had very kindly travelled some distance so that Jim could demonstrate his camellia grafting techniques. Richie welcomed the small band of members present and called for volunteers to help with the setting up of our Annual Show at Ravenswood on Thursday 10th July and its not too late if you want to help us out during the Show weekend - just contact a Committee member or Richie. Richie ran a quiz and then Jim showed us his Cleft and Saddle Grafting techniques. Some of the tips I learnt were: Use a product like White King bleach to sterilise tools; Use Kanjiro or Plantation Pink as understock and keep them watered for 7-10 days in advance of grafting; Trim leaves by cutting along the vein (folding leaves one behind the other); Use a good quality seed raising compost for the grafts With a Saddle graft use a peg and foil at the graft joint; spray antirot in the plastic bag that you use to cover the graft. Jim and Jenny also brought along some lovely camellia blooms, which were benched and won a number of classes in the competition, including Champion Bloom with Star Above Star. Among the members was the standout achieving 38 points overall. The evening ends with a friendly chat and a light supper; if you are able to come along please try and bring along a plate of something to share. 5
