1 Art and Culture Center of Hollywood Distance Learning Integrated Art Lesson Title: Description and Overall Focus: FALLing Leaf Collages Students will be introduced to a local writer and illustrator for a true story based in West Palm Beach, Florida. This story is about a Green Buttonwood Tree that is uprooted and moved to a new location up the Intercoastal by barge. Students will create colored Buttonwood tree leaves using watercolors, instant coffee/tea, and salt. They then will make a FALLing theme collage using one of the phrases included by gluing their leaves onto a larger piece of paper. Length of Lesson Grade Range Sunshine State Standards, National Standards and FCAT Benchmarks Objective(s) Materials: PLEASE NOTE: Some materials must be acquired prior to this lesson minutes Elementary (See attached) Students will use a variety of kitchen pantry items to create textural Buttonwood leaves that will be formed into a descriptive themed art project. They will also learn the scientific reason why leaves fall from trees. Teacher Provided Handout Templates and Examples 1 - Copy of the Green Buttonwood Tree Leaf Template attached FOR EACH STUDENT 1 - Copy of the FALLing Leaf phrases list attached for EACH STUDENT Art Supplies 1 - Sheet of white drawing or watercolor paper for EACH STUDENT 1 - Set of watercolors for EACH STUDENT or paints enough for the classroom (Students can also use crayons or colored pencils, but then the instant sugar free coffee, tea and salt would not be needed) 1 - Pencil with eraser for EACH STUDENT for drawing 1 - Small and medium round tipped watercolor brush for EACH STUDENT 1 - Teaspoon of Instant sugar free coffee, tea and table salt for EACH STUDENT 1 - Pair of Scissors for EACH STUDENT 1 - White colored pencil or piece of white chalk for EACH STUDENT 1 - Glue Stick for EACH STUDENT 1-9 X 12 piece of black construction paper for EACH STUDENT

2 Introductory activity Students will begin by learning about Arbor Day and why leaves fall off the trees. They then will draw several Buttonwood leaves on their white paper and begin coloring them in with the watercolor paints. They will sprinkle mixtures of salt, sugar free coffee and tea and the sugar free gelatin on to of this mixture to add texture. Core activity Students will continue making enough leaves of different sizes, colors, and textural combinations until they have enough to create the FALLing theme they have selected When the leaves are complete, students will use the scissors to cut out the leaves and begin to place them on the piece of large black construction paper. As soon as the student is happy with their leaf composition they should carefully glue down each leaf onto the black paper. (Note: Overlapping the leaves is a great idea) Closure activity Students will complete their compositions and write with a black or white colored pencil the theme title somewhere on their creation. (Note list of possibilities enclosed). The examples will be shared with the other class participants. Assessment Teacher follow-up idea Student follow-up idea Cooking Lesson: Students will have learned about nature, leaves and why they fall from the trees. They will also know how objects of texture can be used in an artistic creation. Students can be given the opportunity to find other natural textures in the construction of a buttonwood tree and do rubbings of them. For example; the bark, the branches, etc. Students can try to do textural rubbings of objects in their own bedroom. This will enhance their ability to see texture and use this knowledge to improve the quality of their drawings and paintings. 3 WHY DO LEAVES FALL FROM TREES? As winter approaches the days get shorter and cooler. This change in day length and temperature triggers some trees to go dormant, essentially hibernating for the winter. A tree s woody roots, branches, and twigs can endure freezing temperatures, but most leaves are not so tough. It is also very energetically expensive for a tree to run its leafy food factories in the winter, when there is often little sunlight and freezing temperatures make water transport (from the ground into the tree s trunk and leaves) a problem. So it s more energy efficient for a leafy tree to close down operations in the winter and to go dormant.

9 Arbor Day in Florida ~ Third Friday in January The first Arbor Day took place on April 10, 1872 in Nebraska. It was the brainchild of Julius Sterling Morton ( ), a Nebraska journalist and politician originally from Michigan. Throughout his long and productive career, Morton worked to improve agricultural techniques in his adopted state and throughout the United States when he served as President Grover Cleveland's Secretary of Agriculture. But his most important legacy is Arbor Day. Morton (photo, right) felt that Nebraska's landscape and economy would benefit from the wide-scale planting of trees. He set an example himself planting orchards, shade trees and wind breaks on his own farm and he urged his neighbors to follow suit. Morton's real opportunity arrived when he became a member of Nebraska's state board of agriculture. He proposed that a special day be set aside dedicated to tree planting and increasing awareness of the importance of trees. Nebraska's first Arbor Day was an amazing success. More than one million trees were planted. A second Arbor Day took place in 1884 and the young state made it an annual legal holiday in 1885, using April 22nd to coincide with Morton's birthday.

12 Snapper Boca Chica Ingredients 1 ½ pounds Florida snapper fillets ½ cup Florida honey 1 ½ cups Florida orange juice 2 teaspoons paprika ½ cup Florida lime juice 1 teaspoon salt Preparation: Score the top of the fillets in a large checkerboard fashion with 6 shallow cuts. Combine orange juice, lime juice and honey in a flat bottom container and mix well. Place fish in container with juice mixture and marinate for one hour in the refrigerator. Combine paprika and salt. Place fish on broiler pan and apply paprika mixture liberally to top of fillets. Broil for 10 minutes for each inch of thickness of the fillets or until fish flakes easily when tested with a fork. Heat marinade to boiling, reduce heat; simmer for 5 minutes while fish is cooking. Baste fish one time just before removing from oven.
