4 27 February 12 March 2017 Years 7 and 8 pupils enjoyed designing their own fairtrade badges to proudly wear during Fairtrade Fortnight 2017 which we recently celebrated.

5 Our main event this year was a Breaks and Ladders Game Event with a Taste Challenge. Students from Years 7-11 and some staff came along and had fun playing the fairtrade game to find out more about why we should all think about swapping to buy fairtrade products. The chocolate Taste Challenge was very popular! There was a lot of discussion about whether the A chocolates or the B chocolates were fairtrade. They tasted very similar so it was down to personal preference. The results were: A= 18 and B = 26. All forms have been shown an informative and thought provoking film about how farmers lives are transformed when they have the opportunity to join a fairtrade cooperative. The Save the World Club performed a short play during their Fairtrade assembly to Years 7 and 8 on Monday 6 th March. All students had the chance to take part in the national Divine Chocolate Poetry Competition on the theme of Sharing Tastes.

6 Fairtrade Dragon s Den Year 9 have enjoyed designing their own Fairtrade products in their Geography lessons. The girls researched where fairtrade products are grown and the benefits of fairtrade using the school s chromebooks to create articulate pitches and eye catching posters to persuade their peers that their fairtrade product was the next must buy item!

7 Estera created a website to advertise her delicious Fairtrade cupcakes.

8 Inter-form Hockey We were very impressed with the standard of hockey this year. The girls not only worked extremely hard in order to put into practice what they had been taught but also had great fun. The weather was very kind to us, this aspect does make a huge difference. As a result of hockey this year a number of girls have been inspired to join Welwyn Garden City Hockey Club. Many thanks to the Year 10 Sports Leaders who officiated and umpired the event. 10 Year 8 RE study The whole of 8G made our own Mezuzah because we have been studying Judaism. A Mezuzah is a tiny scroll with the Shema (a prayer) written upon it. The scroll cover is usually made out of plastic or metal to protect the prayer inside. The scroll is fastened on the right hand side of the door frame of every room in your home excluding the bathroom. It acts as a reminder to Jewish people that God is everywhere. 11 Internet Safety Three Year 9 students from the Save the World Club: Dana, Molly and Bella delivered an interesting and thought provoking assembly to Years 7 and 8 pupils last week. The girls wanted to highlight some of the dangers of using social media and how to stay safe. They clearly communicated their message through video clips and a game. Slides used in the assembly and created by the girls are on the next page.
