1 International Day of Friendship Target audience: Ensino Fundamental 1 Aim: To study vocabulary related to friendship, get to know about the International Celebration, learn recipe vocabulary. Duration: minutes Organization: group work; pair work Material: ingredients for the recipe of chocolate chip cookies (about 40 cookies): 1 cup butter, softened 1 cup white sugar 1 cup brown sugar 2 eggs 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 3 cups flour 1 teaspoon baking soda Preparation: Learn more about International Day of Friendship Human beings are social creatures and have always valued the importance of friends in their lives. To celebrate this noble feeling it was deemed fit to have a day dedicated to friends and friendship. Accordingly, the first Sunday of August was declared as a holiday in US in honor of friends by a proclamation made by US Congress in Since then, World Friendship Day has been celebrated every year on the first Sunday in August. In honor of Friendship Day, in 1998, Nane Annan, wife of Secretary-General Kofi_Annan, named Winnie the Pooh as the world s Ambassador of Friendship at the United Nations. But in 2011, the United Nations proclaimed the International Day of Friendship with the idea that friendship between peoples, countries, and cultures can inspire peace efforts and build bridges between communities. The UN wanted the day to involve young people, as future leaders, in community activities that include different cultures and promote international understanding, peace and respect for diversity. It is observed on July 30 each year. On this International Day of Friendship, let us cultivate warm ties that strengthen our common humanity and promote the well-being of the human family. Procedures: Talk to students about the importance of friendship. Write on the board one of the poems by Jill Eggleston: Friends at school Are big and small. Friends at school Are best of all! or Friends care. Friends share. We need friends Everywhere! 2 teaspoons hot water ½ teaspoon salt 2 cups chocolate chips plastic plates worksheets for students 1 box Photocopiable Teacher s copy

2 Divide students into small groups and hand them the slips of paper with words. Ask them to separate the ones related to friendship and the ones that aren t related. Check the result with the students. Related words: love, best friend, birthday, care, dear, happy, hug, funny, smile, kiss, remember, celebrate. Ask them if they know about the International Friendship Day and supply some information about it. Hand students the worksheets with the Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe and read the ingredients. Go to the school kitchen to prepare the cookies. Read the recipe and explain the vocabulary through mimicry: pour, mix, etc. Invite them to participate as much as possible. Invite different students to help you. While the cookies are baking, dictate a short paragraph about a four legged friend (explain that they are pets with four legs.) and ask students to draw it. E.g. My four legged friend is a cat. Its name s Tuti. It s four years old. It s black, brown and white. I love my four legged friend. My friend eats cat food and drinks milk. It lives with me. Ask students to show the drawings to the group. Celebrate friendship with the students while they eat their cookies Sites suggested (accessed on June 3, 2014) Chocolate chip cookies < ChocolateChipCookie.jpg.CROP.promo-mediumlarge.jpg>.
