2 New England Colonies The New England colonies consisted of Massachusetts Bay, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and New Hampshire. Massachusetts Bay was founded in 1630 by William Bradford and James Winthrop for religious freedom and to be able to escape religious persecution in England. Connecticut was established in 1636 by Thomas Hooker for farming, trade, and political freedom. Rhode Island was also founded in 1636 by Roger Williams in order to establish a colony that accepted all religions. New Hampshire was founded in 1679 by John Wheelwright for fishing and trading. The main religion of the New England colonies was Puritan. These colonies had thin and rocky soil which was not good for farming, and they had cold, bad winters. The economy of these colonies was based on fishing, whaling, and shipbuilding. Fishing and whaling were popular, because these colonies were

3 were right next door to the Atlantic Ocean. Shipbuilding was possible due to the vast amount of timber in the many woodlands in this region. 1. Name the New England Colonies. 2. 4 Middle Colonies The Middle colonies consisted of New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware. New York and New Jersey were both founded in 1664 by different people in order to build a colony on land that was captured from the Dutch. The Duke of York established New York, whereas, John Berkeley and John Carteret established New Jersey. Pennsylvania was founded in 1682 by William Penn in order to establish a Quaker colony in North America. Delaware was formed in 1704 by William Penn for trading and farming. The main religion of the Middle Colonies was Quaker. The soil in these colonies was better for farming than in the New England colonies, but it still wasn t great. Their climate was mild. The economy here was based on wheat farming and iron mining. These colonies became known as

6 Southern Colonies The Southern Colonies consisted of Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia. Virginia was established in 1607 by John Smith in order to establish a English colony in North America and to search for gold. Maryland was founded in 1634 by Lord Baltimore to establish refuge for the Quakers in North America. North and South Carolina were both established in 1729 by different people on the basis of farming. North Carolina was founded by William Berkeley and South Carolina by Anthony Ashley Cooper. Georgia was founded in 1733 by James Oglethorpe as a refuge for doctors and to have a colony between the Carolinas and Florida. The main religions in the Southern Colonies were Catholic, Protestant, Presbyterian, and Angelican. The climate was very warm
