12 Ancient China Civilization Overview Similar to Ancient Egypt, Ancient Chinese civilization flourished along the banks of a large river. The Huang River Valley is where Ancient China developed. Huang means yellow in Chinese. The Huang River has a slight yellow color from the soil of the Gobi desert. Unlike the Ancient Egypt and Ancient Mesopotamia, the Chinese civilization still remains today. It has existed for thousands of years. Dynasty Overview Dynasties are a series of rulers that belong to the same family. In ancient times, there was not a smooth transition from one dynasty to the next. Rulers would often overthrow each other and dynasty time periods would overlap. During times when there was not a dynasty ruling, China would be ruled by smaller regions by different groups. After reading the overview on dynasties, predict what daily life was like in Ancient China. How do you think it differs from modern times?

14 Oracle Bones Oracle bones were pieces of bone or turtle shell used to communicate with the spirits and the gods. They were used mainly in the Shang dynasty. Those who used the oracle bones would carve questions onto the bone in a special script. Heat would then be applied to the bone until it cracked and the pattern of cracks would be interpreted as the future. Draw Oracle bone script uses pictographs. Create your own pictograph and write the meaning of it below. Shang oracle bone script hǔ 'tiger' Write Write a question about the future using your pictograph. Bronze Age Taotie Mask Bronze work during the Shang Dynasty is one of the greatest cultural achievements in the ancient world. The technique they used involved liquid bronze being poured over tightly packed clay molds. This allowed the artists to apply designs directly to their mold. Their favorite design was the Taotie masks. They represented a spiritual force to ward off evil spirits. The masks would always have large eyes, fangs, and nostrils to give it a beast-like appearance. 15 Terracotta Army The Terracotta Army is a collection of life-size clay sculptures representing the armies of Qin Shi Huang. Qin Shi Huang was the very first Emperor of China. Even though there are around 7,000 figures, no two are alike! The clay figures are arranged in rows, very similar to military formation. The Terracotta Army was discovered in 1974 by men who were digging a well. Finding the largest pottery figurine group is considered one of the greatest archeological finds of all time. Qin Shi Huang was the first Emperor of the Qin dynasty (and of all time) from BC. He standardized Chinese writing, law, currency, and bureaucracy. He was also known as a cruel ruler who killed those who didn t agree with his ideas. He also burned books and banned scholarly discussions.

16 Confucius & Confucianism Confucius was born in 551 B.C. and is one of the most famous Chinese philosophers. He strongly believed in the value of self-improvement and education. His philosophy can be found in a book called The Analects. Famous Confucius Quotes: Before you embark on a journey of revenge, dig two graves. Everything has its beauty, but not everyone sees it. It does not matter how slowly you go so long as you do not stop. Respect yourself and others will respect you. The superior man is modest in his speech but exceeds in his actions. Directions: Select a quote from above and describe underneath the flap what you think Confucius meant by this statement. Give a specific example and share with the class.

17 Daoism Daoism is a contemporary version of Confucianism. It is based on the teachings of Laozi, also known as the Old Master. Scholars are unsure if Laozi truly existed or he was a legendary figure for the Daoism religion. Daoism was followed in the early Han dynasty (100s BC) during philosophic times. The teachings of Daoism and of Laozi are written in a book titled, Tao Te Ching (The Way of the Dao). Similar to Confucianism, Daoism attempts to set forth proper behavior for improving one s life on Earth rather than afterlife. They focus on the nature of reality and the here and now. Famous sayings of Laozi from Tao Te Ching Without Darkness, there can be no light. Those who know do not say. Those who say do not know. The usefulness of a pot comes from its emptiness. Try to change it and you will ruin it. Try to hold it and you will lose it. Laozi, Founder of Daoism Directions: Select a quote from above and describe what you think Laozi meant by this statement. 18 The Great Wall The Great Wall was designed to stop northern invaders (Mongols) from invading China. Many people mistake the Great Wall for being one continuous wall, but it is actually made up of different sections. All the sections together make up around 5,500 miles in length! It is the longest structure ever built by humans. The earliest sections of the wall, created in the Qin Dynasty (over 2,000 years ago!) were made from stone and wood. Many workers have lost their lives from working on the wall. Do you think The Great Wall was worth building? Why or why not? Give at least three reasons and use support for your reasoning.

The red lines represent land routes and the blue represent maritime routes. Chinese merchants exported silk, spices, tea, and other goods. This route was utilized in the Western Han Dynasty (after the Qin Dynasty) and the routes were formed throughout the Han Dynasty. What cultural impact do you think the Silk Road had on China? How did it influence their way of life? Predict hazards that traders faced along the way. How do you think goods traveled along the silk road?

25 Dynasties DYNASTIES TIMELINE: Xia Dynasty ( BC) Shang Dynasty ( BC) Zhou Dynasty ( BC) Qin Dynasty ( BC) Xia (2200 BC BC Approx.) Marks as the end of primitive society and the beginning of dynasties. It lasted nearly 500 years with around 17 emperors. Little is known about this dynasty, little was recorded. Shang (1800 BC BC Approx.) First recorded history in Ancient China began in the Shang Dynasty. Archaeologists discovered evidence of impressive buildings and city structures during this dynasty. They also found royal tombs, similar to those found in Egypt and Mesopotamia. They also found oracle bones, used by rulers to communicate with spirits and the gods. Zhou (1046 BC BC) Zhou was the longest lasting dynasty in China s history (over 800 years!) Zhou is divided into two dynasties Western Zhou ( BC) and Eastern Zhou ( BC). This reflected the move of the capital eastwards where it was greater protected from invaders. This was a period of intellectual awakening. Important philosophers and great thinkers such as Laozi, Confucius, and Mencius all lived during this dynasty period. Qin (221 BC BC) During the Qin dynasty, Chinese politics changed dramatically. Legalism was adopted as the official ideology. Those who opposed legalism were punished or even executed. In legalism, humans were believed to be evil by nature. They were to follow strict laws and harsh punishments. The Great Wall of China was also built during this time.

Many people died possible over 400,000 people. Many were buried within the wall itself. In modern times the Great Wall provides China with a large revenue from visiting tourists. Examples: The Berlin Wall, the Walls of Madrid, the Walls of Jericho, and the Iron Curtain. Current Examples: radar, airspace, international waters, internet security, prevention from internet hackers. Do you think The Great Wall was worth building? Why or why not? How did it influence their way of life? How do you think goods traveled along the silk road? What are hazards traders faced along the way? Traders often traveled in groups called caravans. They frequently used animals such as camels to move their goods in larger quantities. Traders would face dangers of robbers, bad weather, and illness. Lack of water was also a major concern while traveling.
