1 Second Grade News March 9, 2015 SCHOOL NEWS Parent Conferences are this Thursday and Friday, these days are half days for students. I am holding conferences, Wed, Thurs and Friday. Friday the 13 th is a lego fundraiser Donuts for Dads has been moved to the loth of March. More info to come. SECOND GRADE NEWS The awards assembly has been cancelled, and awards will be sent home this week. Please follow the instructions on the sheet I am sending home to sign up for conferences. If you are a parent I see frequently we do not need to meet, just let me know ahead of time. If you do not have internet access, you can return the sheet with the times you want. Interim reports will be given out at the Parent- Teacher Conferences, if we decided not to meet I can send these home with your child. The Unity Dance has been postponed to the 27 th of March. The last day for after school classes will be moved to April 2 nd. The 24 th is the tentative date for spring pictures. March Black History program at 2pm March 12 th and 13 th are official conference dates but I would like to meet with parents throughout the whole week. 5 A Brief Look at Ancient China About 8.,000 yea; ago Stone Age people settled in the part of Asia we now call Chin-e. This land had many mountains and valleys. It had forests, deserts, and winding rivers. The first people made their homes in the valley by the Yellow River. This land was good for raising grains such as barley and wheat to make bread. It was also a good place to hunt animals for food. The climate along the Yellow River was hard on the_gbinese people. There were floods and earthquakes. Other time -S, there was very little rain. And so some of the Chinese moved south to settle along other rivers where the climate was not so harsh. Here, the people planted rice in muddy fields. Rice became a very important source of food. The Ancient Chinese invented many things that made their lives better. We still use some of these inventions today! One invention-of the Ancient Chinese was the compass. It helped the people know which direction was south, north, east, and west. The first compass was called a "south-pointing fish." They took a wooden fish with a bit of metal in it and floated it in a bowl of water. It would always point south! A second invention Was silk cloth. Silk is made by -silkworms, and Chinese women wove the silk threads into fine, soft cloth. A third invention was the kite. Kites were made of silk cloth and bamboo sticks. A fourth invention was fireworks. Fireworks were made of gunpowder, which was discovered by Chinese scientitts. Fireworks were used daring celebrations such as New Year's Day. Fireworks were thought to scare evil spirits away so the new year could begin without any trouble. A fifth invention was bronze. Bronze is a metal made by mixing copper and tin together and heating the mixtufe. The Ancient Chinese used bronze to make spear and arrow -heads, knife blades, cooking pots, and other tools. The Ancient Chinese created a written language so they could keep records of things.-the Chinese language has changed very little since it was created. It does not have an alphabet as we do, where we combine different letters to spell words. Instead, they have a different character for every word. Where we have to learn just 26 letters, Chinese must learn about 3,500 different characters before they can read a simple book! Because there was a lot of good farmland in China, armies from countries in the north attacked to try to take over the land. Some Chinese built walls and watchtowers to protect them from the enemies. In 221 BC, China's first emperor came to power. He decided it would be good to have a single long wall along the northern border to protect the land. He ordered that all the walls be linked together into one very long, thick wall. Parts of the wall are still standing- today. It is called the "Great Wall of China." 6 The Great Wall of China The Great Wall of China was built to protect China's people from their enemies in the north. The main wall was about 1,800 miles long, 15 to 30 feet thick, and up to 25 feet tall. The Great Wall of China ran from the sea in the east to the desert in the west, along the mountains in northern China. Some say it looked like a huge snake winding its way along the top of the mountains. The Great Wall of Chien is one of the largest building projects ever completed. Parts of The Great Wall of China are still standing today. Here is a map of the United States. 11 ) With different landforms and climates, China also has many nds of plants. Everything from forests to desert plants can be found in China. The land along the mighty rivers is good for growing crops such as rice, wheat, and corn. Much of the land in China is too hilly or too dry for growing large amounts of food. Ancient Chinese farmers learned to make the most of the -, good land near r_ the river by building terraces. Terraces are flat ledges cut into hillsides. In dry areas farmers built canals to bring water from rivers to fields. Many farmers in China still grow their crops on terraces. 0 Why does China have such a variety of climates and plant life? 12 Name Date Climate, Land, and Plant Life China covers a huge part of Asia. In fact, it is the thirdlargest country in the world. Within its borders are hills, valleys, and deserts. It also has some of the world's highest mountains and longest rivers. Because China is such a large country, it has more than one climate. Places in the north, far from the equator, get very cold. Places in the south are usually warm. Some areas, such as those near the ocean, get lots of rain all year. Other areas, such as the Gobi desert, are very dry most of the year. Winds called monsoons change the weather. In different seasons, they blow dry air or wet air across China. 341_._..,..,..
