1 Welcome back to World History! Thursday, January 18, 2018 Sit with the groups you ve been working with the past few days- be ready to present about your country! You need your notes out and something to write with.

3 JAPAN Did not explore or colonize From , Japan would go back and forth between unification and civil war. During times of unification, they were led by a leader called a shogun (a military leader). When central government broke down, they d have feudalism (local leaders, or daimyo, are in power, and they fight each other for territory with their samurai) : The Tokugawa Shogunate unified Japan. During this time: Japan developed quickly- economy improved Edo (Tokyo) became the capital Golden age- Japanese culture flourished Government eventually adopted a closed policy- limited contact w/ outsiders (especially Europeans) to limit outside influence

8 CHINA Ming Dynasty ( )- Mongols kicked out, China returned to tradition (Confucianism, civil service exam, etc) Explored from : Zheng He led 7 expeditions in the Indian Ocean for trade connections and to show China s prestige Voyages ended in China became more closed off (isolated)government attempted to control outside influence When the Ming government weakened in the 1600s, the Qing Dynasty replaced it in final Chinese dynasty

11 PORTUGAL First European country to really begin exploring Prince Henry the Navigator- set up a school for navigation, mapmaking, sailing Went to the Indian Ocean- established control of many trade posts to try to control the spice trade Also established contacts along the African coast Colonized Brazil- established sugar plantations- imported many African slaves In Brazil, spread Portuguese culture (Portuguese language, Catholicism) New mixed race: mulatto- blend of African/European

14 SPAIN Needed to compete with Portugal- sent Christopher Columbus out west to find a route to India (accidentally discovered the Americas) Colonized Mexico, Central America, much of the Caribbean, and most of South America (except Brazil) Also colonized the Philippines Conquistadors took over Native American empires Spanish culture spread (Spanish language; Christianity spread through missionaries) New blended race: mestizo (blend of Spanish/Native American) Encomienda system: Spanish settlers given authority to take over land, force labor from natives- led to much abuse Focused on commercial farms (haciendas) and mining

19 BRITISH Began exploring in the 1600s- went to North America and the Indian Ocean Colonized the East Coast of North America (the 13 colonies) and Canada around Hudson Bay In America focused on farming (including cash crops); Canada was mainly focused on the fur trade Unlike Spanish and Portuguese, British were Protestant British East India Company- private company that mainly focused on India (especially cotton textiles) Also had colonies in the Caribbean (sugar trade)

22 FRENCH Competed with the British for land in North America- claimed Louisiana (midwest US), part of Canada Participated in the fur trade (along with the British and Dutch) French East India Company- also tried to trade with India Also had colonies in the Caribbean (sugar trade)

25 DUTCH Declared independence from Spain in 1581 Protestant (unlike Spain) Dutch East India Company- went to Indonesia to control the spice trade Also had colonies in the Caribbean (sugar trade) and in North America (New Amsterdam- later New York) for the fur trade

27 Exploration/Colonization Map- Due MONDAY *Fill out the key at the bottom- each country needs to have a different color!* PART 1: Draw the exploration routes for each explorer shown on the board. Label each route with the explorer s name (write small- there s a lot of explorers), and then color each route according to the colors you identified in your key. PART 2: Using the colors in your key, color the territory controlled by each country (include both the home country and any colonies). -> Turn this in when you are finished. Make sure your name is on it!
