Niagara Falls City School District English Language Arts Packet 3: Standard 1: Students will read, write, listen, and speak for information and understanding. Read unfamiliar texts to collect data, facts, and ideas Read and understand written directions Locate information in a text that is needed to solve a problem Identify main ideas and supporting details in informational texts Grade 3 This pdf file contains items aligned to the CCLS that can be used for both test prep and to assess student proficiency in the major clusters/standards that are going to appear on the New York State assessments. The use of these items is totally up to the discretion of individual teachers, and therefore is optional. Tasks are bundled by standard and the level of rigor is indicated on each. The intent is not to create a mock assessment but rather to provide resources from the item banks so that teachers will have easily accessible items to use for instructional purposes.

Fruit Pizza Here is a different kind of pizza. Follow these directions to make a fruit pizza for dessert! You Will Need: round, ready-made pie crust 1 can of applesauce 2 apples, peeled and sliced thin small box of raisins 1 tablespoon sugar 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon baking sheet (9 inches x 12 inches) rolling pin mixing cup What to Do: 1. Use the rolling pin to roll the unbaked pie crust flat. Roll the crust until it is large enough to cover the baking sheet. The crust will be very thin, but it will be crispy after it bakes. 2. Spread a thin layer of applesauce over the crust. 3. Place apple slices on top of the applesauce. Lay them flat. 4. Scatter raisins over the apples. (You can add other sweet toppings to your pizza. Chocolate chips, peaches, pears, and bananas are all good choices.) 5. Mix the sugar and cinnamon in a mixing cup. Sprinkle the mixture on top of the pizza. 6. Have an adult bake the pizza in an oven at 350 degrees for 15 minutes. 7. The adult should remove the pizza from the oven. The pizza will be too hot to eat right away. Let the pizza cool for another 15 minutes. 8. Cut the pizza into slices and enjoy a warm, delicious, fruity pizza pie! 2

FREEZE! by Deborah Rubin Fields 1 What is the fastest way to make a meal? The fastest way to make a meal is to take food from the freezer. It does not take much thinking. We do not even think about how the idea is not really new. For many years, people have frozen food to eat it later. 2 The Chinese used to store food in underground rooms. They called these rooms ice cellars. Other people put food into snow-packed cellars. Still other people learned that they could make ice inside clay pots. Finally, the Labrador Inuits gave Clarence Birdseye the idea for freezing food. 3 In 1912, Birdseye was a fur trader. The Inuits showed him how to fast-freeze fish. The fish stayed tasty with the quick freezing. It also looked good when cooked. There was a secret to the freezing. Birdseye sprayed the food with salty water while it was very cold. 4 In 1924, Birdseye opened a company. He built a food freezer for the company. It was the first of its kind. He also tried selling frozen vegetables, fruits, meats, fish, and seafood. 5 At first, storeowners and shoppers were afraid to buy his new food. But things changed when World War II started. There was not enough tin to pack food into cans. Frozen foods, however, came wrapped in paper. So stores were happy to sell frozen foods. 4

6 After the war, orange juice and breaded seafood became very popular. Companies then started making more and more kinds of frozen food. Today people buy a lot of frozen food. 7. What is needed to quick freeze foods? A) ice B) paper C) clay pots D) saltwater 8. Who gave Clarence Birdseye the idea for freezing food? A) shoppers B) the Inuits C) the Chinese D) store owners 9. Why do people freeze food? A) Freezing makes food cost less. B) Freezing keeps food from spoiling. C) Freezing causes food to taste better. D) Freezing makes food easier to store. 10. Why does food need to be frozen in small amounts? A) so only one serving is sold at a time B) so it can be thawed quickly and safely C) so it can fit in a freezer D) so the shopper can choose how much food to buy 5

11. What is the most likely reason frozen food is kept in the grocery store s freezer? A) so food can be stacked in rows B) so food packages can be easy to find C) so food stays cold D) so shoppers can choose from more kinds of food 6
