French Toast with Warm Apple & Dried Fruit Topping TIP: Using whole grain bread like the bread shown below is a great way to add variation to this traditional breakfast standard. The warmed apple & dried fruit topping is a flavorful and not difficult to make from simple to exciting! alternative to maple syrup. Preparation Time: 5 minutes for French toast, another 5-0 minutes for the apple & dried fruit topping Cooking Time: 0 minutes for French toast, another 0 minutes for the apple & dried fruit topping Ingredients - Pieces of Bread per person About Egg per Piece of Bread Milk Vanilla Extract Butter or Margarine Salt Ground Cinnamon Sugar Apple Dried Cranberries and/or Raisins Orange Lemon or Lime Equipment 0 Inch Frying Pan Spatula Juicer Plate Measuring (or any) Cup Bread (or any large) Knife Small Sharp Knife Tablespoon Table Knife Fork Cutting Board
. If you re using sliced bread, skip to step. Otherwise, cut slices from a loaf about ½ inch wide.. Add a good shot of milk (), a small shot of vanilla extract (), and a dash of salt () as shown.. Break the eggs onto a plate as shown in steps () and (). () Hold the egg snugly in your hand and tap it just hard enough against a firm (preferably rounded) surface, like the plate edge shown here, to crack the egg shell. () Use your thumbs to push in the cracked area as shown and break the membrane. Then gently pull apart the shell to release the egg white and yolk onto the plate. TIP: If necessary, remove any broken shell pieces from the plate by. Scramble the egg mixture by stirring vigorously with a fork () until all the yolks have broken and what you have is well mixed together about as shown in (). larger shell piece broken egg shell piece using a larger shell piece to scoop up the smaller piece(s) the two shell pieces should attract each other.
5. Add the bread to the plate (), and turn the bread slices over in the egg mixture to ensure even soaking (). TIP: When I make French toast with whole grain bread, like the bread shown here, I turn the bread a few times and let it soak for at least 0 minutes to soak up as much egg mixture as possible....rinse () and cut the apple in half (5), and then into quarters (6). Next While the bread soaks, cut ( & ) and juice the orange and lime or lemon (). Then......remove the core from the apple quarters (7), cut each quarter into - slices (8), and finish by cutting the slices in cross section into bite sized pieces (9)
7. Put the frying pan on the stove () and turn on the burner heat to MEDIUM () (As shown below, I ve turned on my burner to on a.stove with a (low heat) to 0 (high heat) scale.) swirl the butter or margarine in the pan by rolling your wrist as shown in () & () until Check the frying pan for proper cooking temperature by running tap water on your fingers () and flicking the water in the pan (). The pan is ready for cooking when the water sizzles as it hits the pan surface and quickly evaporates. (NOTE: If the water sizzles and evaporates in a puff as soon as it hits the pan, move the pan to a cool burner for a few minutes. Turn down the heat setting a few notches on the burner you originally used, and heat the pan again. If the water doesn t sizzle, keep heating the pan until it does.)...the pan surface is evenly coated as shown here (). 0. Carefully put the soaked bread in the hot pan making sure the bread pieces don t overlap. 9. Add about as much butter or margarine to the hot pan as shown on the table knife ().. Cook for - minutes until the bottom of the bread looks browned as shown when lifted with a spatula.
. Turn the browned bread using the spatula and a quick wrist roll as shown in steps () and ()....add ½ tablespoons sugar () and a small dash of salt to the pan (). As soon as Dust the top of the French toast with ground cinnamon () and sugar (), and cook for another - until the bottom of the French toast is also lightly browned ()....the sugar starts to melt as shown with the arrows, add as much butter or margarine to the pan as shown in (). As the butter or margarine starts to melt (5), use a spatula to stir the melted butter or margarine and sugar together (6), and add the orange/lemon or lime juice (7). Then... melted sugar 5. Transfer the cooked French toast to a plate (), put the pan back on the stove without adjusting the burner heat, and
...stir the mixture occasionally (8) until it starts starts to bubble (9), add the cut apples (0) Stir occasionally () until the fruit and juice mixture again starts to bubble () and thicken enough so that the juice runs about like room temperature maple syrup would pour from a spoon as shown in () a handful of raisins () and/or dried cranberries () and a good shake of ground cinnamon (). 6. Finish by putting a piece of French Toast on a plate () and spooning on the freshly warmed apple and dried fruit topping ().
