3 COOKING LEADER GUIDE Four Friends (Luke 5:17-26) Lower Elementary Workshop Focus: God teaches, heals, and forgives. Keep these tips in mind as you welcome kids to the workshop and explore the story together. Each week, remember to welcome kids to the rotation. Keep in mind that for some kids, it may be the first time they are visiting your workshop! If kids have heard the story several times during previous weeks, read it again! Kids learn through repetition, and every workshop will explore the Bible story in a slightly different way. Remember that the Shepherds are there to support you as they accompany kids each week. Be sure to visit to download the Family Page for this story. Make copies of it and ask Shepherds to distribute it during the Wrap Up. Open the Bible (10 minutes) COOKING Four Friends Storytelling Set Up: Put out the flip chart and markers and place the Bible, bandage, and chalice in the storytelling area. Welcome kids and Shepherds to the storytelling area. Pass around the Bible, bandage, and chalice. Ask kids what they think of when they see these items. List the ideas on the flip chart. Close your eyes while I read today s story. Listen very carefully for three things Jesus does. Read the story and ask kids to open their eyes. What did Jesus do? Allow time for kids to respond. Jesus did three very important actions in today s story. Hold up the Bible. Jesus taught. Hold up the bandage. Jesus healed the man who was paralyzed. Hold up the chalice. Jesus forgave the friends of their sins. These three things make Jesus... JESUS! Spark Story Bible Bible Gauze bandage Chalice Flip chart Markers These three items help us remember what Jesus did in today s story. Some kids may not make the connection between the chalice and forgiveness. Take a moment to explore this important symbol of grace with kids. Later in the story of Jesus life and work, Jesus gathers his friends around a dinner table and shares wine and bread with them. This meal is called the Last Supper, and it is also the first Holy Cooking Workshop, Four Friends Rotation Leader Guide. Spark Sunday School 2009 Four Friends 59
4 Communion. During Holy Communion, we are forgiven by God for whatever we have done or left undone. Hold up the three items again and ask kids to name the name Jesus actions together teach, heal, forgive. Activate Faith (25 minutes) Four Friends Pizza Before serving any food, always check with caregivers for kids who have food allergies. Provide an alternative if necessary. Ingredients (serves 10) Pita bread, one bag of 6 pitas Tomato sauce, three 8-ounce (226 g) cans Shredded mozzarella cheese, two 8-ounce (227 g) bags Pepperoni, two 3.5-ounce (99 g) bags Set Up: Prepare a workspace standing around a counter or table may work better than sitting. Open the sauce cans and place them on the workspace with the pastry brushes inside of them. Open other packages and place them on plates for easier access. Have baking sheets ready and preheat the oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit (218 degrees Celsius). Spark Story Bible Oven Oven mitts Pizza cutters, 2 Can opener Baking sheets, 2 Pastry brushes, 4 Plates, 1 per person Napkins, 1 per person Cups, 1 per person Water pitcher, 1 to 2 Activity Instructions 1. Gather around the work area and introduce the activity. Today, we will make a pizza. We start with our crust. Hold up pita bread. Our crust today is pita bread. While we add three things on the pita bread, let s name the three things Jesus did in our story. As you name each ingredient, hold it up, using it as a counting tool. First, tomato sauce to help us remember Jesus was a teacher. Then we add pepperoni to help us remember Jesus forgave the sins of the man who was paralyzed, and he forgives our sins everyday. Finally, we add cheese on the top because Jesus healed the man who was paralyzed. All together, our pizzas have just four ingredients pita bread, sauce, pepperoni, and cheese to remind us of the four friends in today s story. 2. Let s start by having everyone find a partner. Have kids choose a partner for cutting the pizzas later on Ask kids to wash up for making pizza. Have kids take turns painting on the sauce using the pastry brushes, putting pepperoni on top of the sauce, and topping the whole thing with cheese. If need be, demonstrate using the pastry brushes. Have everyone place the pita bread on the baking sheets. Bake at 425 Fahrenheit or 218 Celsius for 5 minutes. 60 Workshop Leader Guides Cooking Workshop, Four Friends Rotation Leader Guide. 5 While the pizza is baking, have kids set the table for eating together with plates, napkins, and cups. Fill up the water pitcher and set it on the table. Have partners take turns slicing one warm pizza into four pieces with the pizza cutter. Ask, What s so important about the number four today? (There were four friends in the story who helped another friend.) Place sliced pizza on a plate for passing and ask everyone to sit down at the table. 10. Before saying grace, say, Today, we made a pizza with four ingredients. Let s list the ingredients. (pita bread, sauce, pepperoni, cheese) The four ingredients remind us of today s story. Four friends wanted their friend to be healed by Jesus. Those four friends went to a lot of work to get their friend to Jesus, and once they did, Jesus healed their friend. Let s say grace: God, We thank you for the food that is before us, the stories that teach us, the love that heals us, and the grace that forgives us. Amen. 11. Reread today s story while the kids eat. Send (5 minutes) COOKING Wrap Up Remind the Shepherds to distribute the Family Page for this story if the kids haven t already received it, and come together for Wrap Up. Gather the props Bible, bandage, and chalice again. I wonder who remembers what our three props tell us about Jesus. (Jesus teaches, heals, and forgives.) In today s story of Four Friends, we learned about Jesus work. Hold up the Bible. Jesus teaches... Hold up the bandage. Jesus heals, and... Hold up the chalice. Jesus forgives. (mom, dad, grandma, auntie, etc). So someone in your family takes you to the doctor. I wonder why they would do that. (so I can get better, because they love me, because they are supposed to) What does the person you were thinking of have to do in order to take you to the doctor? (get permission to leave work, pay money, travel, etc.) It s not always easy or convenient to go to the doctor. Spark Bibles Spark Bible Stickers Thermometer, batteryoperated Bandages, assorted Stethoscope Basket Today, we are reading a story about four friends who want their friend who was paralyzed to heal. These friends find it s not easy to find healing for their friend. They spend a lot of time and energy and use a lot of problem solving in order to take their friend who was paralyzed to Jesus for healing. Let s open our Spark Bibles to Luke 5:17-26 on page Please follow along while I read, placing an I Don t Get It sticker where something doesn t make sense. 8 I wonder what those four friends might have been doing if they hadn t taken the time to carry their friend who was paralyzed to Jesus? How would it feel to carry someone all over town on a stretcher? (I might get tired. My arms would hurt.) Those four friends were not going to give up on their other friend. Do you think we can help our friends with the same energy that the four friends in our story did? (Yes!) Gather up the Spark Bibles before moving to your work area. Activate Faith (25 minutes) Sourdough Friendship Bread Before serving any food, always check with caregivers for kids who have food allergies. Provide an alternative if necessary. Ingredients (serves 12) Dry yeast, one 0.25-ounce (7.08 g) package Warm water, 4 cups (946 ml) Sugar, 2 tablespoons (25 g) Flour, 4 cups (500 g) Set Up: Make copies of the Sourdough Friendship Bread recipe on green copy paper. Collect all needed tools and ingredients and display them on a table or countertop good for working. Divide the materials needed into stations: Yeast, Measuring, Mixing, Pouring, and Stapling. Make a label for each station on green copy paper. Write the recipe on a whiteboard or posterboard placed where kids can see it. Activity Instructions 1. Gather kids and Shepherds in the work area. The four friends wanted their friend who was paralyzed to be healthy. We can help our friends and family to be healthy, too. Eating healthy food is one way to be healthy. Today, we are going to make a healthy bread starter called Sourdough Friendship Bread. Bread starters are shared among friends and families and used to make yummy, healthy bread. Hold up loaf of bread and ask if any kids have experienced bread starters in their home. Today, we will make the bread starter, package it with directions, and then take it home to share with friends. Let s get started making the starter! Ask kids to sign up for a job or two today. Then, ask kids to find their labeled workstations. Jobs include measuring, mixing, pouring (into bags), and stapling. Begin at the yeast station by warming the water to about 110 degrees Fahrenheit or 45 degrees Celsius (warm to the touch) in the microwave, teapot, or pan on top of the stove. 64 Workshop Leader Guides Cooking Workshop, Four Friends Rotation Leader Guide. 9 Kids pour yeast into the mixing bowl and add the water. Mixers mix it up. Kids with the measuring job measure out the flour and sugar. Mixers mix it in. Before we pour the starter into the bags, let s watch it. What is it doing? (bubbling, popping, etc.) The bubbles tell us the starter is growing and healthy. Kids pour ½ cup (125 g) of starter into each bag and wipe bags clean of spills using the dishcloth. Read out loud the directions for taking care of the starter, making Sourdough Friendship Bread at home, and passing on the starter to more friends. Have kids tape the directions onto the bags and ask them to think about whom they will give the starter to. Kids may put the names of those friends on the directions. Remind them to put the starter in their refrigerator as soon as they get home. Enjoy samples from the loaf you baked. Ask kids to help wash and clean up the work area. Send (5 minutes) Wrap Up COOKING Remind the Shepherds to distribute the Family Page for this story if the kids haven t already received it, and come together for Wrap Up. 11 Sourdough Friendship Bread Hi! Inside this bag is ½ cup (125 ml) of Sourdough Friendship Bread starter. Keep it in the refrigerator and shake it every 7 days. On the seventh day, feed the starter by adding at least ½ cup flour (63 g) and ½ cup (125 ml) water. Wait until it bubbles before putting it back in the refrigerator. Take out ½ cup as a starter for another loaf, and put into a plastic freezer bag in the refrigerator. Bake some bread using the recipe below, and then pass some starter on to your family and friends! Ingredients 1 cup (250 g) sourdough starter One 0.25-ounce (7.08 g) package active dry yeast 1½ cups (355 ml) warm water 5-6 cups ( g) flour 2 teaspoons (12 g) salt 2 teaspoons (8 g) sugar ½ teaspoon (2 g) baking soda Shortening to grease the baking sheets Directions Take the starter out of the refrigerator and let it warm to room temperature. Dissolve the yeast in water that is warm to the touch. Mix 3 cups of the flour, salt, sugar, yeast, and starter together in a large bowl. Mix in 2 more cups of flour and the baking soda. Turn the dough onto a floured board and knead for five minutes. Make the dough into a ball, place in a greased bowl, and cover with a dishtowel. Let the dough rise until doubled about 1½ hours. Punch the dough down and divide it into two balls or ovals. Place the balls or ovals on greased baking sheets and cut crosses into the top of each. Let the dough rise again for minutes (optional). Bake at 400 degrees Fahrenheit (204 degrees Celsius) for 34 to 40 minutes. Cooking Workshop, Four Friends Rotation Leader Guide. Spark Sunday School 2009 Four Friends 67

Make copies of it and ask Shepherds to distribute it during the Wrap Up. Open the Bible (10 minutes) COOKING Four Friends Storytelling Set Up: Prepare a small table with the yeast experiment supplies on it. Activity Instructions Welcome kids and Shepherds to the storytelling area. Demonstrate a yeast experiment. Pour equal amounts of dry yeast into the jars. In one jar, pour about ½ cup (120 ml) of cold tap water. In the other jar, pour about ½ cup (120 ml) of water that is warm to the touch. Label the jars cold water and warm water. Ask kids what s happening in the jars. (nothing) Ask kids to open Spark Story Bibles to Four Friends on page 348 or Spark Bibles to Luke 5:17-26 on page 1135 and follow as you read. Invite kids to put an I Don t Get It sticker where something doesn t make sense. The four friends did not give up. They wanted their friend to become well. They had faith that Jesus could help their friend. Sometimes, we need to wait for things to happen and not give up. Not everything we want comes quickly. Faith in Jesus helps us not give up on the really important stuff. Ask kids why health is a really important thing. Is health more important than a new video gaming system or something new to wear? Check the jars. What s happening in the jars? (The warm water jar has a few bubbles in it.) Let s set this experiment aside and check on it later. 14 Activate Faith (25 minutes) Don t Give Up Butter Before serving any food, always check with caregivers for kids who have food allergies. Provide an alternative if necessary. Ingredients (serves 16) Grape juice, 1 gallon (3.78 L) Whole wheat frozen bread dough, one pound (1530 g) bag Heavy cream, two 1-quart (0.95 L) containers Set Up: Thaw frozen bread dough according to the package directions. Set up the work area with the butter-making ingredients and tools. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit ( degrees Celsius.) Tear off two large pieces of waxed paper. Activity Instructions 1. Introduce today s activity. Making food from scratch takes patience and time. We can t give up if we want to eat it! The four friends didn t give up. Jesus saw that and understood the faith of the four friends. The man who was paralyzed also had a lot of patience. It probably wasn t fun being carted around on a cot while the friends tried to find a way for him to see Jesus! Today, we are going to bake some bread by taking a shortcut. The bread dough is already made. All we have to do is pop it in the oven. But... we don t have any butter we just have cream. We are going to make our own butter from cream. It s going to take some time and some work. If we don t give up, we will have yummy butter to spread on our bread. None Oven Oven mitts Baking sheets, 2 Mixing bowls, 2 Rotary hand beaters, 2 Strainers, 2 Waxed Paper Serrated Knife Plates, 1 per person Napkins, 1 per person Cups, 1 per person Pitchers, 2 Butter knives, 2 Butter plates, 2 Breadbaskets, Send kids to wash up for helping. Ask two or three kids to spread out the buns or bread on the baking sheets before an adult puts them in the oven to bake while butter-making is going on. Set the oven timer for 15 to 20 minutes. All we need today for making butter is cream, a mixing bowl, hand beaters, and a strainer. Hold up the different items. Some kids may not be familiar with old-fashioned rotary hand beaters (sometimes called egg beaters). First, we pour the cream into the mixing bowl. Then we will take turns beating the cream. Beating the cream is the long part. When the cream turns to chunks, we will use a strainer to strain out the liquid. Then our final step is kneading the butter chunks into a shape. Let s get started. Pour cream into the mixing bowls. Have kids take turns beating the cream with the hand beaters. Making butter takes work and time. Support kids if they begin to tire or lose patience. 70 Workshop Leader Guides Cooking Workshop, Four Friends Rotation Leader Guide. Spark Sunday School 2009
15 When solid chunks of butter form in the cream, pour chunks and leftover liquid into a strainer. Strain out the liquid. Place the solid chunks of butter on the waxed paper and knead. Shape the butter into crosses. Take the bread out of the oven and cut with a serrated knife. Have kids set the table with plates, cups, and napkins. Fill up the pitchers with grape juice and place them on the table. Put butter and bread on serving plates and place them on the table. Bring everyone together for a blessing. Bless the bread using this Jewish blessing. Here s the blessing in both Hebrew and English. Barukh atah Adonai Eloheinu melekh ha-olam, ha-motzi lehem min ha-aretz. Blessed art Thou, Lord our God, Ruler of the Universe, who brings forth bread from the earth. Amen. 13. Pass the bread and butter. Serve with grape juice and enjoy fellowship. Send (5 minutes) COOKING Wrap Up Remind the Shepherds to distribute the Family Page for this story if the kids haven t already received it, and come together for Wrap Up. Recheck the yeast experiment. Ask, What has happened to our yeast? (The yeast in the warm water jar may have risen and/or there is a ring of bubbles around the top of the water.) There s a word I want to teach you. The word is tenacity. The four friends in our story today had tenacity. They kept going even when it looked like they would not be successful. They persevered. They were stubborn. The four friends did not give up! We all feel like giving up sometimes. Today, you may have felt like giving up on the butter. You may have thought it would never work, but it did. Faith has tenacity. Faith means not giving up.
