2 Welcome to Bake-A-Wish Thank you for registering to hold a Bake-A-Wish event. You ll be raising funds we desperately need to grant the wishes of seriously ill children and young people. Because without the generosity of people like you, we simply couldn t grant life-changing wishes that provide hope for the future, strength to fight and resilience to cope. Your baking really will make a difference to the lives of the children who turn to us. Bake-A-Wish is a simple way to raise funds whether you re a baking novice or a dab-hand with a wooden spoon. In this pack you ll find lots of ideas and materials to help you on your way. However you get involved, you ll be helping bring joy to families at a time when they need it most. 3 How to Bake-A-Wish Taking part in Bake-A-Wish couldn t be simpler just follow this easy recipe: Ingredients: Lots of lovely baked goods Hordes of hungry guests A bit of Make-A-Wish UK magic STEP ONE Choose your date and location. Fill out the details on the posters enclosed with the pack and pop them up to promote your Bake. STEP TWO Whip up some yummy baked treats. You can always ask your guests to bring some along too. STEP THREE Sell and scoff your cakes and then count up all the money you ve raised. Send it to us and we ll take it from there. (There's a page later in this guide on how you can pay in your fundraising.) STEP FOUR We ll use the money you ve raised to help create wishes for seriously ill children turning your cakes into life-changing wishes. Shhh: if you re not the best baker, you could always spruce up some shop-bought goodies (we won t tell, honest!)

4 Bake-A-Wish at school There are lots of ways your school can get involved and Bake-A-Wish to raise funds. You could hold a bake-off, organise a cake sale or bake a cake to represent a wish. Bake-A-Wish with friends A great reason to get together! You could hold a coffee morning, afternoon tea or make something savoury and get together. Bake-A-Wish at work You can sell cakes in your canteen, or have a team lunch where everyone makes something. Hold a bake sale at work and let your customers and suppliers know what you re doing so they can come and buy a treat!

5 FUNDRAISING Cupcake recipe IDEAS These beautiful Make-A-Wish UK cupcakes won t fail to impress. So if you re a dab hand with icing then why not give them a whirl? These cupcakes will take 30 minutes to cook and two hours to decorate. The toppers are best made the day before so they can set and are then much easier to place on top of the buttercream. Turn these toppers into rainbow colours by using different coloured modelling paste. You can buy modelling paste in most supermarkets in the cake decorating aisle. The night before you need the toppers, roll the navy modelling paste and emboss Make-A-Wish onto it. Using a 58mm scalloped cookie cutter, cut the topper, making sure you have room for the star, and then pop it on the drying sponge. Repeat until you have 12 toppers. Using the grey modelling paste, mould 12 stars. You could use a small star cutter if you have one. Stick the stars on the toppers with a brush of water. Mix some silver lustre with white alcohol to make paint. With a fine brush paint the embossed Make-A-Wish and the star. For the toppers - 120g of navy modelling paste - 20g of grey modelling paste - 10g of white modelling paste (to make glue) - Silver, white and blue nonpareil - Silver lustre dust - White alcohol For the cakes 150g butter, softened 150g caster sugar 150g self-raising flour 3 medium eggs 2tbsp milk Few drops of vanilla extract 12-hole bun tray, lined with paper cases For the buttercream 110g butter, room temperature 500g icing sugar 1 tsp vanilla extract 60ml milk Using 10g of modelling paste and a teaspoon of water in a microwavable dish, melt the modelling paste to make a glue. Brush the glue from the star in a curve under the Make-A-Wish and then sprinkle the nonpareil over the glue. Shake off the excess and rearrange them until you have a neat line and leave the toppers to dry overnight.

6 FUNDRAISING IDEAS Cupcake recipe continued The next day make your cupcakes. Set the oven to Gas Mark 5 or 190 C. Place all the ingredients in a bowl and beat until smooth. Divide the mixture between the paper cases, and bake in the centre of the oven for minutes, or until the cakes have risen and are just firm to the touch in the centre. Remove cakes from the oven and transfer them to a wire rack to cool. Make buttercream. Add butter, icing sugar and vanilla extract to a large mixing bowl, then beat for about five minutes with an electric whisk until smooth. Pour the milk gradually if you need to loosen the mixture. Once the cupcakes are cold, pipe swirls onto the cupcakes using a Wilton 2D. Add the toppers to the cupcakes and serve to your Bake-A-Wish guests! 7 FUNDRAISING IDEAS Keeping it safe and legal Make sure all your ingredients are fresh and food is prepared, handled and stored hygienically. Check out the Food Standards Agency if you need more information. It s handy to know what ingredients have gone into your cakes be aware that some people may have allergies. Mark anything containing nuts, dairy, eggs. Small raffles held on the day of your event can be a great way to raise funds. But if you plan anything bigger you may need a licence we can offer you advice. If you re holding a big event you may need permission from the venue or local council. If you re unsure, give us a ring to check. We hope your Bake will raise lots of money. Make sure you keep cash nice and safe and try to have two people present when you re counting it.
