1 The jar of salad cream It is a beautiful sunny day. The sky is blue and the waves are crashing on the beach and I am walking along the sea front road. Now where is the cafe? Go right down the high street and then take the second left. Ah, here it is! Good afternoon Sir, what would you like to order? Could I have a look at the menu please? Certainly sir, here you are. Hum! There is a good choice. Let me see. I fancy a salad.. What kinds of salads do yo I ll take the cheese salad please. Yes, Sir. What a lovely view out of the window. There are a few people taking a walk with their dogs and there are small fishing boats in the harbour and it looks like the fishermen are mending their nets. I wonder if any fishing boats will go out today. Here you are, Sir. Your salad. Thank you. That looks very nice. But it would be nicer with some salad cream. Ah, there is some salad cream on the next table where the young couple are sitting. Excuse me, would you mind passing me the salad cream? Not at all, here you are. Thank you...oh, it looks like there is a separate layer of oil and layer of vinegar in the jar! I must give it a good shake. Excuse me Sir, just wait a Oh no, What s happened! The top has come off the salad cream jar. Oh dear! Look the salad cream has gone down the jacket of the young gentleman at the next table. I am really, really sorry. The top has come off the salad cream jar and the salad cream has gone down your jacket. You must let me pay for the cleaning of your jacket. Don t worry. It is only a little bit of salad cream. No, you are very kind, but I must insist on paying for the cleaning of it. After all, it was my fault. The sun is still shining, the fishermen are still mending their nets and there are still some people taking their dogs for a walk but I am not really having a very good day.

7 The jar of salad cream
8 Teacher s notes This story happened at a small sea-side town which I was staying at when I was young. Some of the younger pupils may not know exactly what salad cream is. There really shouldn t have been a separation of the oil and vinegar. Perhaps it had been standing there for a long time. Would you think to check that the cap is on properly before you shake it? It was quite bad. The salad cream landed on the right shoulder of his suit. The couple were rather nice about it though. I think I gave him 3 to get his jacket cleaned. Grammar section In this story I have tried to introduce the present continuous tense. You may notice, in the story, that I have slipped in the present perfect tense. What s happened and has come off is a present perfect construction. It is not my intention to explain the use of it, and sometimes I think it is better just to slip something in and in this way they get the feel of it and at a later date you can explain it. Also, You must let me pay for the cleaning of your suit, should probably have read: You must let me pay for your suit to be cleaned. But this would involve the passive infinitive construction which may be above the level of the pupils. You may like to play the game What am I doing yesterday? Ask the pupils to come to the front of the store in turn and act out some action which they did yesterday. The other pupils guess what the action is using past continuous tense Role plays There are two role plays. The first of these is on ordering food. At the Happy Restaurant. The menu is simple and the dialogue is easy and pupils should get talking quickly. For the takeaway menu pupils must design it themselves. The second role play is about giving directions. Working in pairs, one of the pupils fills in the boxes on the map with the name of shops. Please write the type of shops on the board, e.g. book shop or computer shop, e.t.c. I include a final page to draw the scene in the restaurant. I find drawing is a good way to end a lesson.
