1 CONNECTION Vol. 8 No. 10 October 2005 ANOTHER GROWTH SPURT FOR JRN NEW STORES NEW DEPARTMENT Newly purchased, Franklin, VA KFC/Taco Bell. Four new (to JRN) stores have been acquired in Virginia. The stores are in Smithfield, VA, Franklin, VA and two in Emporia, VA. One in Emporia is JRN s first and only stand alone Taco Bell store. This brings the total number of JRN restaurants to 161 currently operating. The stores were formerly owned by Westcott and are located in the southeast corner of Virginia. They are in Jack Hager s Region and Eddie Von Lochausen will be the Area Manager. We do not have pictures of the crews or more information on them, but we hope to soon. Welcome to the JRN Family! What do these two KFC customers have in common? See page 3. JRN's Human Resource Department has been restructured! Tammie Pitts, an 18 year veteran of JRN, has been promoted to HR Manager. She continues to supervise many of the risk management responsibilities she has had in the past, including Worker's Compensation, general liability and JRN s safety program. She is gaining additional duties in her new role, such as post accident drug testing, and working with HR Director, Dave Quint, in formulating and (Continued on page 2, column 1) 100% MOBILE! Please join us in congratulating Tracey Baker and her outstanding team on Mobile Hwy. in Pensacola, FL. They achieved an amazing 100% today on their CER. This team is a true example of consistent excelling CER performance. Today s visit marks the 6th consecutive CER they have achieved at Gold Status or above. They just do an awesome job in all areas of delivering the Mania to our customers. They show excellent presentation to the customer, a very clean and organized restaurant, and awesome product quality. Their teamwork attitude makes it a true pleasure to be in their restaurant. They also received my Little/Big Chicken award today. This is in true appreciation for all of the little things they do everyday that make a big difference. Thanks to Tracey and the entire team for all those little things you do & congratulations on your wonderful CER performance today! Thanks Thelma, Harris and the whole JRN team for Running Great Restaurants in MoPen!!!! Achieving a 100% is very special in the KFC system and is much to celebrate! Thanks! Tim Rook, Head FBC, KFCC HR continued from page 1 col 2 executing JRN's strategic direction. Martha Sellers has long assisted Tammie with a cornucopia of administrative duties in addition to her operations responsibilities, so it was only natural to transfer Martha into the HR Department as well. Last, but by no means least, Holly Johnson has recently joined JRN's HR Department in the role of Unemployment Insurance Specialist, reporting to Tammie Pitts. HR Director, Dave Quint (aka: DQ) says, "The fundamentals of business are summarized this way, Serve the customer or serve someone who does. And, that's what my team and I are all about. Our customers are the management teams and associates who are serving the customers visiting our stores. As always, our team stands ready to assist you. Holly Johnson fax: Martha Sellers fax: Tammie Pitts fax: Dave Quint fax: Touring the Lavergne, TN KFC L to R: Jim McKelvie, KFC, John R. The massive development and remodel plan for JRN stores was another vital topic. The verdict was JRN is on target for 2005 with strong sales and profits, and actively developing the capabilities of its people. 3 JRN CONNECTION October 2005 Vol. 8, No SMILE FOR THE CHICKEN KFC ROCKS WITH LITTLE RICHARD This is the picture I told you about. Trynity and her great grand parents Mr.& Mrs. Case (pictured below). She loves KFC Chicken and eats it often in Tullahoma. (Trynity asked for her picture to be taken as well when Customer of the Year pictures were taken in the Tullahoma KFC of the Butterys who were in last month s issue.) June Gregory (Answer to the question on page 1) Pictured above, Rock and Roll Legend Little Richard, whose hits include: Tutti Frutti, Long Tall Sally, Rip it Up, and Good Golly Miss Molly. If you are in the Tullahoma, TN store on almost any given day you will see Little Richard at the drive-thru. He gave me this picture and signed it. He is a really friendly guy. He usually comes by going to or from a concert. Little Richard lives in Lynchburg, TN about 11 miles from Tullahoma. June Gregory, Tullahoma RGM Emeritus ODE TO A SNACKER Zachary Dresch I ate a KFC Snacker, For its smells of goodness did entice, And its taste uncompared throughout the land Did draw me in. NO PITY FOR PETA This note was sent via Champs Check about the West By-Pass, Bowling Green, KY KFC, Lola Richards RGM. I am the biggest KFC fan ever. Once PETA protested outside our KFC and I took my lunch outside and sat on the bench beside him (the protestor) and proudly ate my 3-piece. The passersby were cheering for me. I love you guys!!!! Chickens are for eatin the staff is as great as the food. I fill up too fast. If I sat there long enough, would they let me eat dinner too? From Loretta Fleming, Area Manager The first bite, oh so precious, With tender white meat Inside a golden bun, One cannot resist its charm. Another bite I did take, Better than the first, Oh, so crisp and flavorful, I must have another bite. Cause they do chicken right! From Wise, VA KFC

4 JRN CONNECTION October 2005 Vol. 8, No The female assistant manager is very pleasant at the Cave City, KY KFC, says a drive-thru customer. At the Nolensville Rd. Nashville, TN store the crew is courteous and polite, according to a drive-thru customer. He also says that he told the manager how great the crew was. Great Job, Team!! adds Area Manager Terry Jennings. I was helped by Janine who is wonderful, writes a carry-out customer at the Hanson Ave. Fredericksburg, VA restaurant. I truly enjoyed my visit and her helping me. She is an asset to the company. The chicken tastes great, says a drive-thru customer of the Tillmans Corner, Mobile, AL KFC, even after being a few hours old. A carry-out customer of the North 9 th Pensacola, FL restaurant says she receives great service from the polite and courteous staff at this unit. I've been meaning to do this for a while but am just now getting around to it, writes a drive-thru customer at the Blacksburg, VA store. I'm writing about my general experiences at the University City Blvd. KFC in Blacksburg, VA. I have used the drive-thru there about 10 times so far during 2005 and have had wonderful experiences every time. This KFC has managed to hire multiple absolutely delightful employees who always get my order right and never fail to give me a big smile and wish me a good day. I just wanted to commend this restaurant on a job well done. Because of my ma ny pleasant experiences there I will continue to be a regular customer. Thank you! At the Boardwalk, Lexington, KY restaurant a dine-in customer says the staff is wonderful and helpful. Also, she adds, the food is always good. I was very pleased with the service at this restaurant, writes a carry-out customer of the Gulf Beach Hwy, Pensacola, FL KFC. Most of the staff were very friendly and that manager Gwen was really nice. The food was ok not the best as it usually is, but ok. But other than that my visit was good. Mrs. Winners charges her for paper plates and plastic ware, but a drive-thru customer at the West By-Pass Bowling Green, KY KFC says she always gets friendly service at the KFC and no charge for her tableware. Patricia, a manager at the McMinnville, TN store, was very kind and helpful in handling the situation of an order that had dissatisfied her. She says she will return to the location. The employees are very nice, helpful, and the food is hot at the Emmett St. Charlottesville, VA restaurant, according to a carry-out customer. The service is excellent at the same Emmett St. store, says a dine-in customer. At the Chatsworth, GA KFC the store is clean, the service is pleasant and the food is fresh, says a dine-in customer. The guest also delivered her compliments to the female manager. Tammy, the manager, and employee Louis are very friendly, says a carry-out customer at the Vinton, VA restaurant. Tosha and Charlene, employees at the Mobile Hwy. Pensacola, FL store, are both very friendly and helpful, says a dine-in customer. Carolyn at the Augusta St. Greenville, SC restaurant, is very polite and gave her a complimentary soda because she had waited a long time. His wife purchased a 16 piece original meal and it was the best ever, says a carry out customer of the Georgetown, KY KFC. He says they really appreciate how well the food was prepared. And, the guest says, the crew and management are doing a fine job. A dine-in guest says the unit at Terre Haute #1, IN is very clean and the service is great. And at the same Terre Haute store another dine-in customer says that employee Jon Zeck is wonderful. She adds that he is very personable and awesome.

Terre Haute #2, IN 11/30/ KFC ON THE INTERNET Kentucky Fried Chicken has been a worldwide phenomenon for many years. If you like surfing internet style, try the KFC Singapore site at It is all in English, but you will need Flashplayer for this and many other sites. Flashplayer is a free download. The Singapore site features Hot Devil Drummettes which come in Spicy Garlic and Spicy Szechuan. The Wow Meal features the Shroom Burger (a layer of mushrooms on a chicken patty on a bun). The Chicky Club for Kids page is very interactive and features games such as Whack-a-meal. The KFC in Malaysia site ( is also very sophisticated. Here is a bit from the history page: 1973 was a special year for KFC because the first KFC Restaurant opened on Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman. As of 1998, there are 250 KFC Restaurants and still counting. Today, great tasting chicken has become synonymous with KFC; and has been enjoyed by Malaysians ever since. In fact, KFC Malaysia has developed a distinctive Malaysian personality of its own. The Polish, Dutch, and Czechoslovakian sites are also interesting. On the Netherlands site visitors are invited to Klik Hier. Wonder what that means? GOOD SCOUT TONYA This summer I was in your location, (Massaponax KFC in Fredericksburg, VA) picking up enough chicken to feed 40 really hungry boys attending the 2005 National Boy Scout Jamboree. It was a busy day in your store (Sunday, July 31 st just around 2:00 pm) and my order was really large. A woman named Tonya waited on me, managed my order (even suggested a way I could save about $25 on my order) and then, because it took a long time to get everything cooked and packed, she tucked in a bunch of biscuits. What impressed me was that she didn t lose her cool, spoke politely to everyone working that day, and didn t get frazzled when a few patrons got impatient. She is a wonderful asset and lovely person. I hope you will pass this along to her. Elizabeth Burke For fun just go to Google and enter KFC and see where that takes you. Chicky is KFC s overseas kids mascot. Left: Inadvertently funny sign from a KFC in Wisconsin. Perhaps a Halloween tie-in? The JRN Connection is published monthly.
