7 HUNG HOM Explore & experience From Hong Kong s oldest cinema to one of its most beautiful parks, Hung Hom is an area that needs careful exploration Nothing beats an old cinema, especially when it s the oldest in the city. Opened in 1970, Lux sticks to tradition by only using manpower, rather than computers, for ticketing. In fact, it s the only cinema in the city to do so. But it does show 3D films, so it s embracing the times in some ways. 2J, Bulkeley St, A bookstore with a history. Hap Shing began life as a grocery shop in the 50s and later started selling books and comics. Locals come here to browse the shelves and check out the extensive secondhand tome collection. Look out for the old martial arts novels. 27 Whampoa St, Some parts of Hung Hom are super-busy. And some parts, like Hutchison Park, are so quiet you can hear the birds sing. Come here for a relaxing afternoon or evening and wander this extensive green expanse which sports a range of traditional Chinese architecture at regular intervals alongside a serene central water feature. Off Tai Wan Rd E. We recommend you visit Fuk Tak, Kwun Yam and Pak Tai temples as you tour Hung Hom. Fuk Tak (corner of Bulkeley St and Po Loi St) is one of Hong Kong s smallest, founded in The Song Dynasty and containing a stone representing the Earth God. Kwun Yam (15 Station Ln), built in 1873, is dedicated to the Goddess of Mercy. Pak Tai (146 Ma Tau Wai Rd) was relocated to its present spot in An iron bell, made in 1893, and an iron incense burner from 1901 can be seen inside. Bulkeley St. For something a little different, visit the door to the air-raid tunnels in Chatham Road North. Okay, the passageways themselves, which saved many lives during the bombings in the Second World War, have been blocked up and the remaining door is locked but a visit here is a chance to reflect on what it must have been like in Kowloon in the war. 8 Food tour Hung Hom is famous for its restaurants. So much to try Yvonne s Noodle 8 Magic Chicken Pie This Sichuan noodle store is as authentic as they come, popular with expats from Sichuan province and spice fiends alike. The signature noodles with beef belly, pork knuckle and homemade spicy sauce are delicious but they also have tofu noodle and cold noodle for beginners. Yvonne knows best, for sure! Bulkeley St, Charming Grill This takeaway store isn t known for its pies but rather its deep-fried chicken. This is a new Magic Chicken Pie outlet although there are more than 200 sites across Taiwan and mainland China. Juicy, crunchy and highly recommended Tak Man St, Hanbros Korean Bulgogi 4 1 Si Sun Fast Food 2 Sang Kee Cha Chaan Teng 3 Steam Fresh 4 Leung Hap Seafood and Hotpot Hong Kong loves its late-night eats, and Hung Hom is perfect for nocturnal types. Charming Grill, which only opens at night and until 3am, serves a la minute charcoal grilled skewers with king prawn, Angus beef, chicken wing with homemade sauce, and beef roll the standouts. 12 Bulkeley St, Takeya Owned by brothers from Korea, Hanbros serves authentic Korean-style barbecue on each table s hwandong pan, which allows diners to grill meat and seafood in the pan s centre and cook eggs, cheese and veggies around the the edge. Other dishes like raw crab marinated in soy sauce and dumpling ramen are also excellent here. 27 & 63 Sung Kit St, Hot Dog Long before McDonalds came to town, this little eatery laid claim to making Hong Kong s first hamburger. They ve been flipping buns since The double cheeseburger with homemade beef patty and chopped onions is a classic. 1A Whampoa St, This all-day crowd pleaser is great for larger groups looking for an unpretentious feed. The signature claypot crab and clam congee is soul warming. Also try the tom yum goong udon with crab, and deep fried octopus balls. 13 Lo Lung Hang St, This restaurant brings the concept of Korea s multi-layered seafood steam pot to the Bay Area. Each layer is filled with different types of seafood, and the juices from each layer of clam, crab and shrimp drip down to the bottom layer of congee. Shop G26, Site 11, Whampoa Garden, Located above the Hung Hom wet market, this spot serves authentic Cantonese and Chiu Chow dishes. Fresh fish dishes cooked to order include stir-fried clam with black bean sauce, fried shrimp with soy sauce and deep fried squid with salt and pepper. 2/F, Hung Hom Complex, Hung Hom has developed its reputation as little Japan thanks to spots like Takeya. This izakaya is a favourite with the area s many Japanese expats, with the owner and chef serving skewers featuring imported ingredients such as Tokushima free-range chicken and Kagoshima pork. 31C1 Tak Man St, Whampoa Estate, How does a hot dog with eggs benedict and bacon sound?
