2 Portland Farm to Table ITINERARY Day 1 Welcome to Portland Day 2 Coffee Roasters and a Culinary Corridor Day 3 An Urban Farm and Portland s Food Carts Day 4 Farmers Market and Organic Brewmaster Day 5 The Willamette Valley Day 6 Farewell to Portland Portland is one of the most exciting cities in the country for new American cuisine, consistently landing near the top on lists of best American food cities. Jenn Harris, acting editor of the L.A. Times Food section, curates a tasty six-day journey through the Rose City. Lovers of organic, local produce will discover an abundance of pioneering micro-producers who are creating new ways to grow, sell and savor local foods. By bringing the farm to the city, the restaurant scene in Portland showcases diverse flavors made with pristine Pacific Northwest ingredients from nearby sources. Hear from innovative and passionate Portlanders, from urban farmers and organic brewers to salt purveyors and food cart chefs, and spend a day in the rolling hills of the Willamette Valley savoring the wines and cheeses for which the valley is famous. 2
3 DAY 1 Welcome to Portland Arrive at Portland International Airport, and transfer to the Paramount Hotel in the heart of downtown near Pioneer Square, the Portland Art Museum and fabulous shopping and dining. Get to know Portland on a culinary walking tour of the city s vibrant center while learning about the history, art and culture of the Rose City. Taste the superb pastas at Grassa, and sample Oregon s diverse bounty at the acclaimed Headwaters. Dinner this evening is at Paley s Place, award-winning chef Vitaly Paley s restaurant where Pacific Northwest fare showcasing local and sustainable seasonal products is served in the warm setting of a Victorian home. (Tastings, D) DAY 2 Coffee Roasters and a Culinary Corridor Nestled among converted warehouses and quirky neighborhoods on the east side of the Willamette river are the pioneering micro-roasters that sparked the thirdwave coffee revolution. This morning s walk introduces award-winning baristas crafting an array of top-notch espresso and cold-brew variations in a mix of coffeehouses, from artful to spare-modern in design. Lunch is at Olympia Provisions, a Portland institution famed for its handcrafted charcuterie. Spend the afternoon in Southeast Portland s culinary corridor, where the city s newest food makers showcase their products. Learn about the local salt harvesting at Jacobsen Salt Co., and taste the results. Visit Bee Local to sample exceptional honey; sip a sample at House Spirits Distillery; and savor the organic, single-estate chocolates crafted at Alma Chocolate. (L, Tastings) DAY 3 An Urban Farm and Portland s Food Carts This morning, visit the Side Yard, an urban farm that produces a remarkable range of vegetables, fruits, seeds, culinary herbage and edible flowers that are harvested within hours of delivery to ensure quality and freshness. Meet farmer and chef Stacey Givens, and see the creative, organic produce she and her team grow for dozens of local restaurants. Lunch is at Nong s Khao Man Gai, a restaurant that morphed from one of Portland s best-known food carts. Then explore Portland s vibrant food cart scene with Brett Burmeister, who has been chronicling and tracking the food carts for a decade and has become the de facto food cart ambassador for Portland. He ll discuss the history of mobile cuisine in Portland and tell stories of vendors and the challenges they have faced. This evening, sample the regional foods of Thailand and Southeast Asia at Andy Ricker s Pok Pok. (L, Tastings, D) Call or visit LATexpeditions.com 3
4 DAY 4 Farmers Market and Organic Brewmaster Tour Portland State University s famed Saturday morning farmers market, a grazer s paradise where farmers and artisan food producers fill 140 stall spaces with the region s bounty. Have a chat with a market representative, meet vendors and taste some of the countless culinary offerings in Portland s premier market. Next, have lunch and a tasting at Ecliptic Brewing, a venture of Oregon craft brewing icon John Harris. Then move on for a tasting at Laurelwood, the first brewery in Portland to brew beers meeting the rigorous certified organic standards of Oregon Tilth, a leading certifier of organic products. Wind down the afternoon at the family-owned Oregon Mead & Cider Co., sampling its award-winning dry, sparkling meads and ciders that are made with Pacific Northwest honey and apple juice. (L, Tastings) DAY 5 The Willamette Valley Leave the city today for Oregon s lush Willamette Valley wine country, one of the world s premier pinot noir producing regions. Drive past orchards, farms and vineyards, where an amazing diversity of products thrive during the valley s long, gentle growing season. Visit carefully selected wineries and vineyards to hear about the region s viticulture, and taste the valley s pinot noir. Continue the tasting tour with a stop at a local creamery to sample some delicious Oregon cheeses and savor a light picnic lunch. Toast your Portland adventures this evening with a festive dinner at Ray, where Israel s diverse cultures and culinary traditions are celebrated with a seasonal menu imbued with full-flavored style from the kitchen of celebrated chef Jenn Louis. (L, Tastings, D) DAY 6 Farewell to Portland Depart Portland for your individual flights home following breakfast this morning. (B) EXPEDITION EXPERT Jenn Harris Jenn Harris is acting editor of the Los Angeles Times Food section, former host of the Forkin Amazing food radio show on TradioV.com and a happy-hour enthusiast on a never-ending quest for her next big bite and stiff cocktail. She s also written for the Times Image, Travel and Calendar sections. You can catch her slurping boat noodles in Thai Town, at a strip mall restaurant trying to pronounce bagoong in her head, or downing a giant order of fried chicken. But before you write her off as the worst eater ever, you should see her massage some kale. ACCOMMODATIONS 5 NIGHTS Paramount Hotel Situated in the heart of downtown Portland, the Paramount Hotel is just steps from Pioneer Place, the Portland Art Museum and Powell s Bookstore. The surrounding neighborhood is full of restaurants and other one-of-a-kind dining options. The rooms are equipped with modern amenities and personal touches. The hotel also features two dining venues Swank, a regional bistro featuring local and fresh products and Swine, a moonshine and whiskey bar, providing a great atmosphere to wind down in after a long day of exploring. 4
