Pinney Commercial Service Representative Consolidated Insurance Center, Inc Cronridge Drive, PO Box 0664 Owings Mills, MD Direct: Phone: Fax: epinney@cicinc.com ED's REFLECTIONS Information from CASI's Executive Director, Janice Miller CASI members, please check your personal information in the CASI Information System. Corrections and additions should be sent to Janice Miller at garjans@suddenlink.net COOKOFF RESULTS Please send all CCO results along with entry sheets and money to: Jenny Windsor TallyMaster 210 Kennedy Drive Severna Park, MD From the President You can always tell when spring has arrived and summer is just around the corner. The numbers of cook-offs greatly increase, as does the challenge of deciding which cookoff to attend. That s a good thing though. During the past month, I had the opportunity to attend two of the older cookoffs in Texas: Houston Pod and Howdy Roo. Both had well over 100 cooks and once again proved that older sometimes is better. If anyone left either of these cookoffs hungry, it was your own fault. From made-to-order omelets to great BBQ, everything was superb! Thanks to the Pod hosts and congratulations to the cookoff winners Houston Pod: Jessie Waguespack and Howdy Roo: Tim Collier. As you probably know by now, there will be four Board vacancies this year. John Goforth, Dorathy Williams, Jenny Windsor and I have decided to not seek re-election. CASI will be looking for a few good men and women, so please consider assisting the organization by running for the Board. The forms are available from the Executive Director. The summer Board Meeting will be at the Irving Elks Lodge on June 25. If you have items you would like addressed, please let one of the Board members or me know. Better yet, make plans to attend! I hope to see you down the road at a chili cookoff soon. Keep cooking, getting those points, and helping the charities! Renee Reflections from the ED It is already June and our Chili Year is fast coming to a close. With that being said, if you are a Great Pepper, you should already have the information and forms for you to complete for your Annual Report. This must be completed and returned to me no later than August 15, Remember that all of your Officers and Referees must have their dues paid through September 30, 2012 at the time you submit your report. You can either send the dues to Darin Jester, our Membership Chairman, using PayPal on the web page ( or include them with your report if you are mailing the completed report to me. I will also remind you if you are considering running for a position on the CASI Board of Directors, a Candidate Form must be completed and returned by August 15, There are four open positions on the Board. If you are considering running for the Board, it would be a good idea to review the CASI Director Job Description material which is located in on the web page in the Resource Center. Several of the Positions require several hours of work on a regular basis throughout the entire year and all positions require work during TICC. Remember, if there are no Directors, there will not be a TICC. There has been a question asked about CASI Membership and eligibility for cooking at TICC. If you have cooked CASI during this past year and received the number of CASI Chili Points required for the State in which you reside, you will receive the CASI General Information Package that contains your certified certificate that you indeed have the correct number of points and are invited to cook. BUT, if your CASI dues are not paid and are not current, you will not be allowed to compete. We do give you an opportunity to pay your dues at TICC during registration. During the last several weeks, I have received several requests for new cookoffs. This is a really good sign. The problem has been finding a contact person who is willing to assist and guide the promoter through the process required to ensure a successful cookoff. If you are a Great Pepper or a Referee, this is one of your responsibilities. We want to keep CASI growing and expanding. Please consider your responsibilities as you agree to accept a Pod Officer Position or that of a Referee. Is your address up to date in CIS? If it is not, you will not receive your Terlingua Trails. Please send me you corrections and I will post them. If you have your dues current and want a log-on for CIS, you may contact me and I will provide it to you. Send your request to garjans@suddenlink.net. Remember that the CASI Board of Directors will be meeting on June 25 at the Irving Elks Lodge in Irving, TX. You are encouraged and welcomed to attend. If you have an issue that requires Board action, please submit it to me by June 15. I am still looking for points, so I will see you on the Chili Trail! Janice

14 Page 14 Terlingua Trails June 2011 May 1, 2011 World-class winner IN THE NEWS First place in Terlingua and Corsicana By Janet Jacobs Corsicana Daily Sun Corsicana, TX Tom Dozier, who won first place at the world chili cook-off in Terlingua in 2010, won first place at the Derrick Days chili cookoff Saturday, also. Dozier, who hails from Irving, said he came to support organizer Ron Baker, whom he met at another CASI-sanctioned cook-off. Derrick Days is a great cook-off, he said. I didn t realize it was this big, it s huge, Dozier said of the Derrick Days event. There were 76 chili entries this year, the largest in years, according to Baker. This was also a Chili Appreciation Society International event, which is another change. Having it promoted through the CASI newsletter probably boosted participation by another 20 teams, Baker said. What was particularly nice was the atmosphere, Dozier said. I didn t realize the whole community turned out. I like the people coming by, he said. Results of the cook-offs were as follows: Chili: First, Tom Dozier; second, Mary McCarter; third, Ramonda Casey; fourth, Mike Rogers; fifth, Gerald Casey; sixth, Lisa Yates; seventh, Charles Breeden; eighth, Blu Kriska; ninth, Jamie Johnston; tenth, Brian Self and Lori McGowan. The team winning Best in Show was Gold Brand Chili. Beans: First, Charles Breeden; second and third, Mike McCarter; fourth, Tom Dozier; fifth, Jamie Johnston; sixth, Rebecca Hanna; seventh, James Grigger; eighth, Kathy Kelly; ninth, Dawn Wiggins; tenth, Teresa Knott. Brisket: First, Clyde Nabors; second, Terry Farmer; third, Ricky Owen; fourth, Rebecca Hanna; fifth, Jason Davis; sixth, Ryan McDonald; seventh, Mike Rasco; eighth, Matt Beamon; ninth, Chris Brooks; tenth, Terry Bowling. 16 Page 16 Terlingua Trails June 2011 Goforth and Windsor Will Not Be Seeking Re-Election CASI Members, I will not be seeking re-election to the CASI Board of Directors this September. It has been a great privilege to have had the opportunity to serve on the board for two terms but I feel it is time to step aside and let others lead the way. I have enjoyed being able to interact with our membership in various capacities enforcing the ideal that we are a truly strong and vibrant collection of individuals dedicated to our motto, CHILI, CHARITY, AND FUN. My support for CASI will remain, but will be in a reduced role. Thank you for giving me the chance to work for you. John Goforth After much thought and consideration, I have decided that I will not seek re-election to the CASI Board of Directors in September. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time as TallyMaster and as a CASI Director. It has been a real treat to see all the cookoffs that CASI sanctions each year and the efforts that everyone puts forth in order to get their paperwork submitted and in on time. I have enjoyed working with my fellow Directors on various projects and especially TICC, one of the greatest events that I have had the privilege of being a part of, in an area of the country that is a real treasure. That doesn t change the fact that due to a very demanding work schedule I simply do not have the extra time that is required to perform this job and serve on the various committees to the best of my ability and in a manner that the membership deserves. Thank you for your support and understanding. Jenny Windsor Poster Contest Guidelines When designing the piece of art, please keep in mind that the poster is a vital element to the success of the event. The artwork that is chosen will not only become the official poster of the Terlingua International Chili Championship, but it will also possibly add to the development of the retail merchandise. The artist should design an initial draft of poster artwork. If selected, the artist will work with CASI staff in making changes and developing the final piece. Artwork must incorporate the following elements: Name of Event: Terlingua International Chili Championship Annual Designation: 45 th Annual Date of Event: November 5, 2011 Artist should keep in mind that the finished poster must also include the Sponsor Logos and pictures of the previous year s winners. Artist should design artwork with the use of bold colors. Actual size of the finished poster must be 18" X 24" and artwork must be camera ready. If selected, artist agrees to relinquish ownership of artwork. If selected, artwork becomes the sole property of the Chili Appreciation Society International, Inc. If selected, artist agrees to sign and number fifty (50) prints within 30 days of request. 17 June 2011 Terlingua Trails Page 17 ALCALDE REPORT Hello to all my Old 320 Members. I hope you are having a great year cooking for charity. Dee and I have been dividing our time between cookoffs and baseball games. Our Grandson Dylan was in the State playoffs for First Baptist Christian Academy and we made a trip to Amarillo to play San Jacinto Christian. We lost our game but, we had a wonderful visit with our chili friends that live in Amarillo. Vickie Childers; Leesa and Ennis Penland; and Margarett and Steve Lopez all came out to visit and watch the game. They were nice enough to sit on our side and cheer for our team. That s what chili friends do for each other. Well, it is time to start making plans and preparations for another great cook off at the Ranch. I am reminding everyone that we are still taking orders for the WALL PLAQUE ROCKS. Most of you that already had your Pod Plaques put in place last year can attest to how good they looked after they were placed on the wall. You are responsible for finding your own rock for your plaque to be attached to. Rocks were of various shapes and sizes. To the right is an Order Form for the Wall Plaque. I think it has all the information that you will need such as price, cost, wording, etc. Should you have any additional questions, please call or me. Take care and keep on cooking chili. I don t have a choice, I m still chasing points need 3 more. Ralph Hay, Alcalde rhay16@comcast.net
