3 ABOUT YOGYAKARTA Welcome! Yogyakarta is considered the soul of Indonesia and with its sprawling temple complexes and dedication to the Javanese arts it s easy to see why. WEATHER FORECAST SEPTEMBER -OCTOBER 2017 Yogyakarta is positioned in the centre of the island of Java, an 8 hour flight from most Australian ports via the hubs of Bali or Jakarta. Its location makes it a convenient place to visit right in Australia s backyard. Yogyakarta is the perfect mix of traditional and modern - the city itself is still headed by the Sultan. Visitors can spend the day wandering the Sultan s Kraton, a walled city within the city built in There are two main temple complexes in Yogyakarta. Included in your build itinerary is a visit to Prambanan Temple. Built in the 10th Century, the temple compound encompasses 240 temples dedicated to various Buddhist and Hindu gods. Volunteers who are arriving early or staying on can also visit the Borobudur Temple in their own time. For those wanting to explore the newer side of Yogyakarta, you can visit some of Indonesia s most modern malls, restaurants and hotels. This makes it one of Indonesia s most liveable cities - yet it is still undiscovered by the many tourists visiting the country every year. e: rockthehouse@habitat.org.au 3

4 GETTING THERE AND AROUND Getting There To reach Yogyakarta you will be required to make a stop over in Jakarta or Bali. Indonesia is home to a variety of domestic carriers offering an comprehensive flight network. Among the most popular carriers, and with the most extensive routes, are national carriers Garuda, AirAsia, and LionAir. Once you arrange your international flight to Jakarta or Bali, it is only a shortw domestic flight to Yogyakarta. Arriving and departing at Yogyakarta Airport Yogyakarta Airport is one of the friendliest airports in Indonesia and also one of the busiest! Be careful on arrival - you are likely to have taxi drivers approach you directly trying to offer you airport transfer services. They are (mostly) polite, if you say no, they ll understand. The airport is fairly small and sometimes can become congested with departing passengers. Make sure you leave plenty of time to check-in for your flight home. Yogyakarta s airport is located just 10km east of the city centre. Your transfer to and from the airport has been arranged, unless you will be arriving early or departing late. A trip from the airport will always be fixed and will cost around 70, ,000 IDR. Getting Around Metered taxis are cheap, costing 10,000 IDR to 30,000 IDR for short trips. See conversion rates below. 5 QUICK TIPS Time Zone WIB (Western Indonesian Time) UTC/GMT + 7 hours. This is 4 hours behind the east coast of Australia (AEDT). Passport and Visa Like many countries, Indonesia requires all visitors to have a validity of at least six months on their passport. Please note that this is strictly enforced. If you hold an Australian passport you will not be required to obtain a visa. Currency and Banking Banks and ATM have made it easier to use international debit cards to withdraw cash. Credit cards can be used in place of cash at most major commercial banks, larger hotels, a few shops and some restaurants in Yogyakarta. The local currency is Indonesian Rupiah. 10,000 IDR is approximately 1 AUD. ATMs are usually located in small cubicles. If someone is using an ATM, wait patiently outside the cubicle until it is free. ATMs will charge a fee of $ $8.00 AUD on average upon each withdrawal - this does not include your own bank fees. If you plan to use your credit or debit card while overseas, please contact your bank before you leave Australia, so that they can international expect activity on your card. Try to carry small bills of 20,000 IDR and under, as getting change for larger bills can sometimes be a problem. Taxes and Tipping Tipping a set percentage is not expected in Indonesia. However, if the service is good, you can tip 10% of your total bill or more (this is expected in Bali and at tourist restaurants in Yogyakarta). Most midrange hotels and restaurants and all top-end hotels and restaurants add 21% to the bill for tax and service (known as plus plus ). The service component is distributed among hotel staff. Hand cash directly to individuals if you think they deserve recognition for their service. A fair amount to tip a good taxi driver or porter is 30,000IDR to 50,000 IDR. Electricity and Power The standard plug used is a two-pin plug (round): Voltage: 230 V. Frequency: 50 Hz. Power sockets: type C / F. Be Aware - hati hati!! As in many Asian countries, tourists in Indonesia should be wary of opportunistic, petty crimes. It s wise to keep aware of your surroundings and valuables at all times. You can reduce your chances of being targeted by pickpockets and bag snatchers by being careful about what you carry and how you carry it. Pay special attention to your belongings while in busy places such as the city s bus or train stations, or popular tourist attractions. There are drivers in Yogyakarta that will offer special rates for one hour of driving. A common scheme is for drivers to take you to a Batik store so that they can sell you very expensive items on which they earn a commission. Also be aware of smooth-talking batik salesmen who start a conversation with you pretending to be a guide. 6 RESPONSIBLE TRAVEL Basic rules of etiquette in Indonesia Here are some basic pointers to follow if you find yourself in a social situation in Indonesia. Avoid using your left hand. It is considered unhygienic and shouldn t be used to touch anyone, pick things up or eat. Remember to remove your shoes or sandals at the door to a house, and don t show the soles of your feet to anyone. Use your right thumb to point at things. Pointing with the index finger is considered rude. Always bend slightly when meeting or greeting an Indonesian older than you or in a position of authority. Do s Be patient. Indonesian people do things at a different pace. Hold your temper - no matter how frustrated you are. Indonesians don t like conflict. Friendly, outgoing and peaceful are the norms for interaction. For this reason, it s important for travellers to remember to not raise their voices and to save face. Dress modestly to respect others and the culture. Always ask to take someone s photo and make sure you gain their permission before positioning your camera. If wanting to photograph or film a child, ask their parent or guardian first. Touching others: It is inappropriate for men and women to touch in public. However, touching is very common between those of the same gender. It is improper to pat anybody on the head. Gesture to call someone - If you would like someone to come over to you, motion with your whole hand held palm down. When picking your teeth with a toothpick after a meal, it is considered polite to hold the toothpick in one hand and to cover your open mouth with the other. Do not Do not discuss religions or politics. Religion plays a large role in Indonesian life and values. Be open to learning and, if you disagree with something, exercise discretion. Do not litter and refuse plastic shopping bags when possible. Do not have an expectation that things will always work, even if you were told they would. Do not accept free alcoholic drinks. 7 DON T MISS IT For a large city, you will find Yogyakarta to be surprisingly laid back. You will be greeted by friendly locals, enjoy the great food and will be amazed at the endless list of places to explore! Gunungkidul Region Gunungkidul Region is home to the most beautiful beaches of Yogyakarta, including the Timang Beach, pictured on the right. Only 2.5 hours drive from Yogyakarta, you will be treated to beautiful cliffs and white waves crashing into coral stones. Visit Watu Panjang Island, home to local lobster fisherman and where you can even bring a lobster home for your dinner! Kalibiru National Park Take a 1-2 hour drive westward from the city and you will immediately notice the decrease in temperature. Up the Menoreh mountain range lies Kalibiru National Park, which is run by the local residents. It s all fresh, cool air and quiet roads and when you reach the top of the mountain you will be welcomed with a with a stunning view of Lake Sermo. The best photo opportunity is at sunset. Entrance fee: Free! Luweng Sampang, escape from the busy streets of Yogyakarta. Borobudur Park The Number one destination for holidaymakers in Yogyakarta, Borobudur is the largest and possibly one of the greatest Buddhist temples in the world. Borobudur is still part of a major pilgramage for Buddhists all over the world. Being one of Indonesia s most visited tourist attraction, Borobudur may be crowded at times. The best time to see it is in the early morning. 8 SHOPPING AND SPENDING Shopping Malioboro is the number one shopping district in Yogjakarta, you can find traditional clothing, accessories and handicrafts in this area. If you visit in the evening, you will be able to enjoy music and people dancing in the street. Malioboro is also the home to Matahari Department Store and Mirota Batik, shops where you can purchase clothing, gifts, food, beverages and beauty products - they are Yogyakarta s answer to David Jones! This marketplace is very big with seven stages including food, kitchenware, clothing, batik and some handicrafts. Be ready to negotiate for the best price - a good rule of thumb is to half the cost that is quoted and go from there! Jl Prawirotaman 14 Prawirotaman Fun spots Kalimilk - A fun milkbar where you can order flavours from plain, chocolate, strawberry, melon to durian and mocha, etc. Be careful of the gajah portion, gajah means elephant! Lempong sari (# TKP1), Seturan (# TKP2) and Jl. Kaliurang (The Kalimilk). Bedhot Resto - Bedhot means creative in old Javanese and this place is one of the more stylish eateries in Yogyakarta. There is plenty to chose from with tasty Indonesian and international food options, plus great juices! Jl Prawirotaman 14 Prawirotaman Oxen Free - A great place to relax and listen to a live band. Jalan Sosrowijayan No.2 Sakapatat - Located in the heart of Yogyakarta, this is a nice and comfy place with great food and drinks! Jl. Pakuningratan no. 34 Amsara - It calls itself an art and coffee shop, but this split-level shop feels more like a restaurant and bar with its frequent live acts.
